The Worst Record I Ever Bought

Having heard some obscure song on an evening R1 show (Richard Skinner?) by Holger Czukay and one of the fops from Japan, I was rather taken with it. Rather than write it down, I filed the name Holger Czukay in my head for the weekend. I was about 14 and earned £4.50 a week on my paper round. LP's were £3.99. Guess what I did every Saturday??

Anyway, into David's Records near the market in Bracknell and I see a 12" single by Holger Czukay called Photo Song. I pick it up and although the song didn't seem extended so the 12" was poor value, it felt rare and I bet no one else at school would have it. I spent half my weeks wages on it and rushed home.

Dropping the needle on my Fidelity UA10 turntable, the most dreary, poe faced rotten sound came out the speakers. I gave it 3 or 4 plays. It got worse. I never played it again.

It still sounds rotten now (don't be misled by the poor mans Thomas Dolby video). ->

I think you made the right choice

This seems to have aged even worse...

Not sure

Although, by and large, I had a healthy dislike for Japan, I always rather liked Red Guitar. I might just be wrong of course.

Mistook

I still love "The Photo Song" and it's useful for Julian Barratt to see what he's going to look like in 20 years time.

Here's one

At 49p The Faust tapes was proclaimed a bargain. At 49p it was over-priced. What rubbish we had foisted on us all those years ago.
