Uncle Wheaty's picture

I am already fed up with the media coverage of the 23 man squad - it is what it is.

Bent should have been included and Heskey left out but otherwise he has made a good choice.

Come on England!

You get to the semis and its nil nil

The ball falls to emile heskey.... i can see the headlines now.good team player though.

I got England

in the office draw, so we're doomed. There's a hundred quid on it!

Theo should have gone

I don't care that he's no good, he's quick and that makes him more exiting than the rest of them. He's the only one capable of an Owen v Argentina moment. Also seems like a decent lad, which is hard to say about the others.

Bent

I disagree that Bent should be in the 23 - yes he can score goals, but offers nothing else. We have plenty of potential goalscorers in the squad, especially in midfield.

Heskey is a bit of an enigma, but he seems to bring out the best in Rooney.

As for Theo, I don't think that "he's a nice chap" is any sort of reason to consider him - but its hard to forget that hatrick.

Being Welsh

i'd just like to say come on Argentina.

Randlepmcmurphy | 1 June 2010 - 11:09pm

This is a football thread

a game the Welsh neither understand or play, as far as I can tell!

Upson will

take no part, Bent could have at least taken a penalty.

The USA squad arrived in South Africa with a steely look in their eye that makes me feel things won't start well.

Its the Algerians

we should worry about.

0
Leedsboy | 2 June 2010 - 12:39am

Those Slovenians

could be tricky too.

0
Dave Amitri | 2 June 2010 - 11:42am

We're doooooooommmed

1
Leedsboy | 2 June 2010 - 1:25pm

I beg to differ Dave

Matthew Upson will play a huge role... in the poker schools.

As that rare thing

a Jock that supports Engerlund, let me say that I do not understand why Citizen Neville is being left at home. Yep he is past his best, but still a better defender than Glen Johnson, who, mark my words, will sell the jerseys at least once in the upcoming month. Why choose a defender who is best going forward? With wot Capellos got, here's my starting X1, 5-3-2 formation.
Hart...
Johnson
Carragher
Ferdinand
Terry
Cole...
Lampard
Barry
Gerrard...
Rooney
Crouch..
No wingers, but full backs providing the width.... and both deliver much better crosses that Lennon etc. No problems with who goes forward/stays back with the Lampard/Gerrard axis, they both bomb in.
Sorted. You will thank me later.
PS anyone else notice that the "captcha" whatsits are full of African players....? Uma Agokigi (Ivory Coast) and Gemu Elarili (Algeria) to name but two. I am sure there are more.....

Gary Neville

Not my favourite footballer. By some distance. For so many reasons but his performances for England are chief amongst them.

0
Leedsboy | 2 June 2010 - 9:13pm

Leeds?ManU?

Perhaps a little bias there?

0
geacher53 | 2 June 2010 - 9:36pm

Well I thought that too

but then I can't explain why I Rooney is my favourite England player. Gary Neville certainly does little to woo the non-Man U fan. Also, I like Phil Neville - there is much to admire about his attitude as well as his ability. And I did when he was at Man U (and I can mention Teddy Sheringham, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham and many more as players I admire)

And I despise Chelsea and Bayern Munich more than I do Man U. Much more. So it really is just Gary Neville.

Esso medals

When you buy petrol from Esso at the moment they give you coins with England footballers on if you spend enough. Last night at the pub a friend of mine gave me 4 of these, thinking I might be collecting them. Included were Ben Foster, Wayne Bridge & David Beckham. Why do I sense these might have been produced some time ago?

I just about remember the 1970 set

Glad to see they are still going.

I'll stick to my Paninni sticker books though.

I still can't get hold of the Geoff Parkes one from 1978!

Second team

Who are we supporting should England fall short? Me, it's the Dutch. The Italians cheat all the time and are bad sportsmen and my Mum supports them, the Germans, well, I quite admire them but couldn't really support them unless it was Germany v France as I will always support whoever is playing France, Brazil....hmmm, maybe third choice. But the Dutch are skillful and tough and good to watch - sort of how we should be really.

Denmark

I was given them in the Word sweepstake.

Come on you Danes!

0
Uncle Wheaty | 3 June 2010 - 8:44pm

I hope an African team goes well

Ideally Cameroon, but probably Ivory Coast.

I won't be following England. After Titus Bramble was so cruelly overlooked they are dead to me now.

0
Jed Clampett | 3 June 2010 - 8:46pm

New Zealand & Mexico

Got them in the Word sweep and the work sweep respectively. I will not have much interest in the world cup come the knock out stages.

0
Leedsboy | 4 June 2010 - 12:20pm

Ghana are my second team

as I have them in the Word sweepstake no chance though since they just got stuffed in a friendly and Essien is out

Having just returned

from Berlin, with a spring in my step, I shall be delighted if Germany progress well.
A fine capital city which does its people great credit.

Come on Deutschland!
