THE WORD Wins Music Magazine Of The Year For The Second Year Running!

Every year about this time the music business gathers together in the finest surroundings it can afford and awaits the results of the Record Of The Day Awards. These are given out to those seen as setting the standards where both music journalism and PR are concerned.

We're obviously thrilled, then, to receive the much-coveted Music Magazine Of The Year Award for the second year running. Below you'll see a delighted Kate Mossman (Reviews Editor) Mark Ellen (Editor) and Jerry Perkins (Publisher) just moments after receiving the good news.

Congrats guys.

Extra helpings all round. Hic.

Vulpes Vulpes | 28 November 2008 - 6:41pm

Word of Regret

Just subscribed to your excellent mag. Congrats to all. Does anyone know how I can get hold of the John Martyn and Lemmy issues then my life will be complete?

Matthew Devonport | 30 November 2008 - 6:37pm

Back issues

Both appear to be sold out, but I'll have a word with the office tomorrow to see if we can do anything. I'll let you know.

Fraser Lewry | 30 November 2008 - 6:51pm

Thanks

You are going up even higher in my estimation. I'm a journalist too and there are always a few spare copies of any publication under the officer hoarder's desk!

Matthew Devonport | 1 December 2008 - 2:02pm

Yeah... well done!

Richly deserved.

Very natty jacket Kate Mossman is wearing...

Patrick Crowther | 28 November 2008 - 6:57pm

ditto

PS Can't read that signature in the middle.

adze thuggery | 28 November 2008 - 6:57pm

I raise my glass,

tip my hat and offer heartiest congratulations.

Time to start working towards 3 in a row.

Carl Parker | 28 November 2008 - 7:23pm

Dear Sir, is this a record?

Two in a row; has this feat been done before? Congratulations! Very well deserved too. At the start of the year I subscribed to Word, Uncut and MOJO. Now I only subscribe to you, which must mean you are doing something right!

Neil Jung | 28 November 2008 - 7:48pm

Now I have The Flamingos singing "I Only Subscribe To You"

playing on my internal jukebox. How very peculiar. Thanks for the good wishes, Neil!

Andrew Harrison | 28 November 2008 - 10:05pm

Congratulation, folks

Keep on doing what you do - same time next year?

Paul Vincent | 28 November 2008 - 7:50pm

Well done you all

Now, when are those podcast awards?

Extra Texture | 28 November 2008 - 8:48pm

congrats!

that's well deserved. cheers from germany!

MoreThanMeetsTheEar | 28 November 2008 - 9:14pm

Well done Kate!

...oh, and you others as well, I suppose...

SirTerence | 28 November 2008 - 9:25pm

Hey ho and hurrahs all round

Raise a glass, shake a leg, and after, get prepping to do the triple next year..

Dave C | 28 November 2008 - 9:30pm

Well done all of you.

Well deserved too. Keep up the good work. Keep not looking down on your readers and we'll keep looking up to you....or something like that

dannyboy3000 | 28 November 2008 - 10:20pm

Christ!

Is it a year since the last one? Well done all. Who said you'd never win anything with beards?

Graham Johns | 28 November 2008 - 11:03pm

YIPPPEEE!!!!!

Congrats all 'round to The WORD crew.

Nicodemus | 28 November 2008 - 11:37pm

Well done - and good to see

Well done - and good to see you all brushed up for the occasion (I seem to remember last year's photo was the cue for lots of sniggering comments on resemblances to Van Morrison and John Alderton, some of which may have come from myself).

Ben Milne | 29 November 2008 - 12:45am

Well deserved...

...given that where WORD magazine leads other monthly publications shamelessly follow.

The three of you look like the new cast of Doctor Who.

backwards7 | 29 November 2008 - 12:51am

Which one's John Barrowman

Which one's John Barrowman and which one's Billie Piper?

Ben Milne | 29 November 2008 - 8:22am

Mark Ellen...

...is clearly the new Doctor. This incarnation has a tendency to travel backwards in time to epochal events in rock history. Now the whole family can learn how an invasion of Cybermen inspired J J Cale to write Cajun Moon.

With her satchel loaded with cans of spray paint, companion Kate Mossman is fond of using traumatised Daleks as canvases for her indecipherable street murals.

Introducing Jerry Perkins as High Monitor of an ancient race, charged with preserving the UK top 40 from the meddling of time travellers.

backwards7 | 29 November 2008 - 1:38pm

Excellent!...

Well done, very much deserved!

humphreym | 29 November 2008 - 2:58am

Tour jacket

Please tell me Kate's jacket has "FogHat '74" written on the back

Atheleane | 29 November 2008 - 6:32am

I was thinking more

Black Oak Arkansas '76, but you may be right.

Whatever, I think that bottle of vodka is finally history. Well done all.

Archie Valparaiso | 29 November 2008 - 8:36am
Beany | 29 November 2008 - 11:13am

Rock and roll!

Archie Valparaiso | 29 November 2008 - 11:18am

Oooooh! Marketing Opportunity

Kate Mossman mugs for subs. Want one! Want one!

Vulpes Vulpes | 29 November 2008 - 11:45am

Discotastic!

Carl Parker | 29 November 2008 - 5:26pm

Style tip

That's clearly Mark Ellen's favourite shirt to pick up awards in.

David Hepworth | 29 November 2008 - 11:54am

Congratulations. You deserve it

It clearly wasn't a black tie ceremony. Did the invitation say 'blue shirt and denim only'?

Handsome.P.Wonderful | 29 November 2008 - 3:40pm

Congratulations

Very much deserved.

Trebles all round.

marmiteboy | 29 November 2008 - 3:47pm

Congratulations

The Word is consistently the most interesting, challenging, thoughtful music and all other culture magazine. I am still ploughing through old magazines and finding nuggets of useful information.

Well Done

Fuzzyface | 29 November 2008 - 6:11pm

More congratulations

What Fuzzyface said above.

Seamus | 29 November 2008 - 8:02pm

As long as

you beat the "revamped" Q. I read a copy in a waiting room last Thursday and it was utter tosh. I will be back next Thursday and will sneak in an old copy of T'Word. I also found myself placing your magazine prominently in my local Tesco. Am I sad or a frustrated brand manager?

Beany | 29 November 2008 - 9:42pm

One does get swept up

with enthusiasm, when it comes to promoting Word. On a recent journey, we stopped at the motorway services, and I saw there were neat piles of Word, Mojo, Q and Uncut is the fags'n'mags shop. When we left, the untrained eye saw only 4 identical piles of Word magazine. One does one's bit...

Paul Vincent | 30 November 2008 - 5:33pm

Yay!

Another Undercover Word Guerilla.

We should have secret membership cards and badges...

Beany | 30 November 2008 - 9:00pm

well done

to you all

badartdog | 29 November 2008 - 9:50pm

Jerry

Remember when you and I used to go for "meetings" at the Nordic bar? Them were the days.

Andrew_Collins | 30 November 2008 - 1:31am

Well Done

Very much deserved of course.

What exactly are the 2 boxes on your award signifying...an orange scribble and a black and white scribble? Anyone explain?

I raise a glass all the way over here in the US of A!

Keep up the good work

David Sutherland | 30 November 2008 - 5:41am

Congrat

ulations. Richly deserved.

Lucas Hare | 30 November 2008 - 8:43am

Excellent Work

Splendid news, congratulations to one and all. It's a strange looking award though isn't it, funny picture with scribbles on it. Subscription renewal form posted yesterday.

David Wright | 30 November 2008 - 10:32am

This just in, hot off the press...

apparently it's art!

Yup... very odd looking thang.

Patrick Crowther | 1 December 2008 - 8:43am

Well done indeed

Would renew my subscription tomorrow,if I didn't have two years left on the current one...

Madrid | 30 November 2008 - 1:06pm

Splendid stuff

Congratulations!

Fraser M | 30 November 2008 - 2:53pm

Congratulations

and thanks for some great memories over last few years, of, among other things:

Jude and the cold lino
"...has anyone called a minicab?"
the Zepcast
the gob iron moment (is that why Van now looks at microphones so suspiciously ?)
the Alan Coren interview
"A lady of a certain age" by Divine Comedy
Mark and the Pate de Foie Gras
the smell of vinyl in the morning
my brother on a faraway beach rubbishing my choice of magazine and then reading it cover to cover ...[Keef cover issue]
McGlashan's "harbour bridge"
Kate goes to Nawlins
the ArtVinyl sub giveaway
Neil Stephenson
Clive James and Pete Atkin
Clare Grogan
and so many more stereo-accompanied bus trips and magazine-enhanced train rides

bless you all-long may it continue

NickW | 30 November 2008 - 5:22pm

Deserved

And not a phrase I often use connected to awards. Well done.

Lee Rimmer | 30 November 2008 - 8:34pm

Cover of latest issue for subscribers

Well done on the award - well deserved.

What happened to the "Special Edition" covers?

I have just received my latest issue as a subscriber and it looks more like a "Women's Own"/"(insert celebrity mag here)" cover than the quality previously seen.

You were obviously busy celebrating the award as you went to press!

Congratulations again.

UNCLEWHEATY | 30 November 2008 - 9:29pm

Congrats and watch out for the eagles

So how many of the opposition can boast of staff who know how to warn monkeys that there is an eagle in the vicinity ?

Danmac | 30 November 2008 - 9:53pm

It's the only mag I read

So it must be the best. Well done.

(I have tried the others.)

Tony Fry | 1 December 2008 - 8:33am

Kudos,

Well done....The last issue was one of the best i have read, even the prog bits. Now, no more beards for a while.

On The Fence | 1 December 2008 - 8:57am

Excellent but......

Far be it from me to curdle the kudos, but please check that the mag is as "best" as last year; rumblings of discontent have filtered thru' of late in the blog and I would hate to see laurels taken for granted. Curmudgeonliness apart, I await 3 in a row with some excitement.
This months issue, BTW, seems a terrific return to form, on first scan thru'

Retropath2 | 1 December 2008 - 9:09am

Hearty congrats all round

As a fellow journo, it's always great to be rewarded for ones efforts and to get an award two years running is especially enjoyable. Keep it ip, please!

robram | 1 December 2008 - 3:38pm

Hooray

Congrats to us too for having such splendid reading taste

Diz | 1 December 2008 - 4:43pm
