The Wire, Seasons 1 & 2
Posted by Roy Levy on 22 September 2010 - 3:30pm.
OK, I know I'm a little late, but I've just finished Series 1 and 2 of The Wire. I've been loving it, but watching alone, late at night (wife not interested) I'm missing sharing the experience. I bought and dipped into The Guardian's "Wire Re-up" , but it contains far too many spoilers, so am leaving it to enjoy after I complete season 5. So if anyone has reached a similar point in The Wire and would like to share their observations about the story so far, favourite characters, baffling details and plot developments etc., please post them here. Oh, and if you've watched beyond series 2, no spoilers please.

Series 2
My favourite series. Surprised Springsteen didn't make a guest appearance.
Anyone have an update on the possible series 6 with Animal Collective based on the Baltimore dance scene?
What!!!???
You don't want to know how McNulty comes out and declares his love for Stringer?
Ah, what a coincidence.
Just started Season 1 for the third time, looking forward to another 5-season run through. Lovely how you see it all afresh once again.
"This is for you, McNulty. This one's for your narrow Irish ass, and this one's for your fuckin' eye."
Season 2 is my favourite, too. Well, jointly with 4. I love Frank Sobotka - such amazing, flawed humanity, and what a performance!
I find myself agreeing with you yet again, idiotbear
Chris Bauer, as union guy Frank Sobotka, is stunning in this - and he ain't half bad as Sheriff Andy Bellefleur in vampire romp True Blood, too (although in an altogether more comic role).
I was surprised
When Avon Barksdale had that sex change operation. And Bunk got abducted by the alien spaceship.
True dat.
;-)
And how
Ziggy Sabotka got the nomination for the 37th Precinct in the Wire/ West Wing Christmas tie-in special, I'll never know. He should never have beaten Omar in a predominantly black neighbourhood.
How I envy you...
...three series still to watch. And all brilliant.
Coincidence
I'm pretty much where you are Roy, having bought the box set the other week. I had watched the first season last year when it was broadcast on BBC2 but couldn't handle the time it was shown, so ended up giving in and going to bed early (no means of recording/sky plusing either).
I've just started the third season, a couple of episodes in to that one at the moment. The show deserves its praise, as far as I'm concerned and I can only hope it gets better as I continue to watch it. Having said that, I enjoyed Season One far more than Season Two, which I struggled with at the beginning- it did improve as it went along, however, but I just couldn't get into the Subotka/stevedore storyline; which is obviously the main one. I was disappointed when D'Angelo went, because he was arguably the most rounded character from the Towers; though the way he went was a fantastic piece of writing.
Season One was where it was at for me though. Here's hoping 3, 4 and 5 will be just as good.
