The Wire comes to BBC2

Five-Centres's picture

Yes, from the week beginning March 28, The Wire is starting from the beginning on BBC2. So now it's available to all.

But, like our favourite obscure band, will we still like it when it goes mainstream?

Of course we will.

Bloody hell

i've just started recording the recent rerun on my sky plus. Not started watching it yet. Will start again i guess, no ads on the FX channel

Above should read

no ads on BBC...apologies

0
Mint | 4 March 2009 - 11:25am

well that's sorted

no need to get the rest of the series on dvd i was suprised it's taken so long.

Chris G | 4 March 2009 - 11:39am

and there's even a chance

that there'll be subtitles on BBC; FX just doesn't carry that signal.

A curse on the schedulers ?

Yes, but like so many of the best shows, look where it will be tucked away.

I make March 28 a Saturday, and assuming its fruity language will push it to a late spot, before (or after !) Mad Men, then I think we are clashing with Match Of The Day for those without A Life, and Saturday Night for those With. So still no-one will see it, and its hipper-than-thou mystique remains intact. I leave it to the y'all to decide whether this is A Good Thing.

two words...

sky plus. Seriously. I'm not some shill for Murdoch, but it's the mutts nuts and ideal for the predicament you might find yourself in.

or V+. Or your PVR of choice.

(This being the beeb I thought I ought to mention that other digi-vcr services were available).

0
Cadabra | 4 March 2009 - 3:50pm

oh aye...

whatever suits. Your mileage may vary. Cable not an option in my neck of the sticks, hence my advocacy of that particular system. Like i say, no vested interest!

*edit* freeview not available as i'm not in UK

Topfield 5800

Freeview PVR, will transform your viewing. You can also easily burn essential things to DVD for long term retention. Utterly brilliant.

V

If you already have Virgin TV services, the first series is available on TV Choice On Demand - go to Channels, HBO and Drama....keep meaning to watch it!

0
AgentGraves | 10 March 2009 - 5:13pm

It Says "Week Beginning March 28th"

I take that to mean any day that week.

A face-spiting nose-cutter writes

Oh I'm OK - I have the disks, but my wider constituency is that still considerable section of the population that who concurred when Dennis Potter named his tumour "Rupert" and so even now do not wish to fund the evil empire that is News International, so that is not a goer.

On the other hand, analogue/VHS technology is still available. For now. For those of us not too inebriated of a Saturday night to set it. And not stranded in the Digital Switch-Off areas without a dual-tuner recorder.

Doods | 4 March 2009 - 2:21pm

you could just watch

the shows live when your in or in the mood. It's not the end of the world if you miss a show even the Wire is only tv. This obession with watching every second not missing a single minute of dvd extra is getting out of hand.

0
Chris G | 4 March 2009 - 2:51pm

aw look...

i take your point on not wanting to put money in Murdochs pocket, but seriously, how realistic is that, in this day and age? Do you boycott all movies that have the 20th Century Fox opening ident too? For what it's worth, I minimise the moolah i hand over to Rupe by refusing to get Sports/Movies subs where he really makes the money!

There's also the irony that, um, The Wire originally went out on the FX Channel over here, owned by Fox. They've also been the original promoters of shows like The Shield, Dexter, Breaking Bad and Family Guy.

Oh dear I feel we are falling perilously close to Godwin's Law.

Yes, I know how ridiculous it can seem when the likes of The Wire and The Simpson come from his largesse, but actively handing over tenners on a monthly basis to the evil empire is step too far. I'm not alone in this either, as plenty wouldn't have it at any price.

Thanks for the technical suggestions , guys. Still at the high end though, i.e. still not in Asda. I did once wonder whether the digital switch-off and the loss of that watch one-channel-tape-another thing would cause family fights across the country, and potentially would be an election issue. However I think the issue has been somewhat overtaken by more pressing problems.

Another new convert

Just started watching it on FX and after two eposides I'm hooked.
I now see what all the fuss is about

0
Gordon Kerr | 4 March 2009 - 3:13pm

is this true?

where did you hear this, Five-Centres?

0
raindog | 4 March 2009 - 4:22pm

I have my sources

That's all I'm saying.

0
Five-Centres | 4 March 2009 - 5:02pm

Five- centres...

... are you Mark Thompson, DG of the BBC? Or possibly Alan Yentob?

0
ganglesprocket | 4 March 2009 - 9:02pm

That's for me to know...

It's not out of the question

0
Five-Centres | 5 March 2009 - 1:11pm

Or maybe...

He works for some TV listings rag like TV Quick...?

0
StringerBell | 5 March 2009 - 3:46pm

I'm not saying

Think what you like

0
Five-Centres | 5 March 2009 - 4:07pm

Or even worse...

TV Choice!

0
StringerBell | 5 March 2009 - 5:04pm

TVChoice is the biggest-selling magazine in the UK

I should be so lucky.

0
Five-Centres | 5 March 2009 - 5:10pm

Your opinion is valued

People, is this show worth the hype and critical acclaim heaped on it by those `in the know` at The Word magazine? So far, I`ve managed to miss it even though I can get FX no bother. Although I seem to remember watching the very first episode two or three years ago and not being hooked. If its that good I`ll just Sky+ it and work my way through it. Please let me know.

0
herecomesbod | 5 March 2009 - 5:43pm

Yes, it's worth it

But try watching with the subtitles on initially, or you won't get a word.

0
Five-Centres | 5 March 2009 - 6:01pm

It is only a TV programme

I agree with Chris G it is only a tv programme, if you get excited about a Tv programme you must be really sad in life

Also how you know the bbc will not bleep out the swearing and how do you they show The Wire in your area

0
monkey88 | 10 March 2009 - 3:18pm

Subtitles

We nearly gave up with The Wire on DVD after a few episodes until we realised we could watch with subtitles on and so have a clue what was being said. We get our tv from Virgin cable; they don't do subtitles so we'll probably have to stick to the DVDs. Thankfully they are down to about £15 a series now.

0
Neil Jung | 10 March 2009 - 3:30pm

Wait a second...

"if you get excited about a Tv programme you must be really sad in life" Chris G

Would you say the same thing about a record, and, if not, what accounts for the difference in your viewpoint between the two mediums, other than pure artistic prejudice?

0
Jonah | 10 March 2009 - 3:57pm

I am worried people

are inventing quotes by me. My point was about the obsessive need to see every second of any series including the extras etc and that people should perhaps relax a little and not be ruled by their sky plus box or listings guides. The wire isn't going anywhere no doubt soon you'll be able to have it beamed directly to your microwave or where ever.

0
Chris G | 10 March 2009 - 5:21pm

I think

Jonah was referring to the passage directed at you by monkey88, who may or may not be one of our younger readers.

0
Fraser Lewry | 10 March 2009 - 5:31pm

Will it be on BBC iplayer?

If it is, then we can all watch at our leisure (for a week at least)

0
Big Jim | 10 March 2009 - 3:59pm

The Wire is already on Radio Three!!!

Described on the BBC website as a "Showcase for works that push the boundaries of drama and narrative, created by first-time radio writers and also writers distinguished in other forms"

Perhaps that's what is coming to the telly
