The Wire and Women

http://www.popmatters.com/pm/feature/61210/women-and-the-wire/

Interesting article claiming The Wire is sexist. All the fans of The Wire on here seem to be men. Are there any women out there who like The Wire?

yes

my ex was a bigger fan of it than myself - and I like it a lot.

Seconded

My wife - who is normally glued to the soaps and the reality shows - has been in love with The Wire since the first series (we're now hoovering up the fourth - and for anyone thinking of reading the above article - there's some key spoilers in the fourth series I wish I hadn't read!)

I would also take issue with the premise of the article - her main complaint seems to be that none of the four 'Young 'Uns' featured in the fourth series are female. But they are four friends who hang around together - when I was their age (albeit living in a Merseyside semi rather than a Baltimore project) I hung around with the boys, too. So is it so strange that they are all the same sex?

I would also take issue with her suggestion that the female characters are either stereotypes or 'men with tits'. Are the women any more stereotypical than McNulty, Carcetti, Bunk or Bubbles? Why is making Omar gay 'better' than making Kima gay?

I dunno. I think she's looking for an angle that's not really there.

thanks for the heads up on

thanks for the heads up on the spoilers - I am just starting series 3 and managed to spoil things for myself by reading the wiki page on Stringer Bell (although I had to read it to confirm that the actor that plays him is British - I'd never have guessed!)

Oh, and my wife is a massive fan of The Wire. To the extent that when 2 smackheads broke into our cellar last night she said 'I suppose they are a bit like Bubbs and his friend, aren't they?'

Tosh

I think it's tosh. I asked her indoors what she thought. She had to stop doing the housework to sit down to think about it, bless her.
She thinks that it's hardly sexist as it keenly reflects society in a very real manner.
Society is sexist, therefore what's happening in The Wire is sexist.
I told her to stop being so silly and get on with making the dinner.
I've not noticed these men with tits though, which episode are they in and are they real ladyboys?

And the wifey that wrote the piece wants to stop getting her knickers in a twist about sexism and get her teeth into why BBC/C4 haven't had the balls to broadcast the show.

Thirded

My missus is a big fan, to the extent of nagging me about pre-ordering the DVD for series 5. Then again, she was also a big fan of 'Homicide' and enjoys the ITV4 reruns of 'The Sweeny' as much as I do. I count myself very lucky to be married to a woman who can't stand reality shows or soap operas.
I don't think there's anything sexist in the show; it just reflects the fact that males are much more heavily involved in crime and policing.

Sexist?

... they should read the Lemmy interview in this month's mag!

Just for the record,

being submerged in all the talk of The Wire around here, I recently got a DVD of the first series.

For those who are saying it's amazing/brilliant/fantastic/astonishing/best thing ever etc etc...

You're quite right. And here was me thinking I was going to cut down on buying DVDs...

All you Wire virgins...

Come mid November you'll be able to buy the lot for £90. That's £18 a series:
