The Wicker Tree

Richie B's picture

Robin Hardy has managed to scrape enough cash together for a sequel of sorts to the Wicker Man...

I'm really quite excited...and Sir Christopher Lee is in it. Anyone else a fan? Will this be a worthy follow up or another Nicholas Cage style Turkey?

The problem here...

is that part of the charm of The Wicker Man is its campness, all the more camp for having been played dead straight. What really made that film wasn't really weird animal heads or tiny frogs being placed under little girls' tongues. It was actually because Dracula was wearing a kilt, while Callan ominously intoned "Ay suspairkt MUD-DUH!" in a very-bad-indeed Scottish accent.

You just can't get away with that sort of thing any more, and if you try to "update" it and do something else, the result is... well, something else (the Fiennes/Thurman Avengers, anyone?)

They might as well hype up a "reimagined prequel" of Performance, with Anita Pallenberg "believed to be on board". It'd be an amusing thought if only it wasn't quite so likely.
