The Take That.

John Connolly's picture

It's my girlfriend's birthday this weekend and she's begun to make vague noises about being mildly interested in going to see Take That in Dublin on Saturday night. I've used all my man skills and am interpreting her comments to mean: "I want to go to see Take That in Dublin this Saturday". There's tickets available and the stadium is about a 10 minute walk from the house.

Despite my ambivalence towards much of their oeuvre, I should take her, shouldn't I? Should I?

I mean, she's been to see Springsteen three times with me since we met despite similar misgivings on her part. Actually, before we'd met she had only ever walked out of one concert - a Bruce gig that she got comps for in 1999. Given her willingness to indulge my interests, it's only right that I repay her, isn't it?

As a matter of interest, has anyone else seen them in the last couple of weeks? I know it'll be full of screaming girls (women?) but it's not going to be like a Westlife gig, is it? I'd do anything for her but I wouldn't do that!

Go for it

I've not seen them but The That have done some mighty fine pop songs over recent years. I bet you'll surprise yourself at how much you enjoy it. Also, aren't Pet Shop Boys the support for this tour? I reckon they put on a good show too.

Actually, considering she's managed to endure Springsteen three times for you I'd say buying her tickets for Saturday is the LEAST you can do.

Several of my mates

Several of my mates have seen them on the current tour, & by all accounts it is a fabulous show.

Go. leave any pre concieved ideas at the entrance & have yourself a great time.

You know you want to.

Nick Cave

is playing in Vicar St. the same night, I'll see you at that instead.

0
Pat Carty | 14 June 2011 - 2:27pm

If you won't take her

then I will. Don't let it be said that I can't show a woman a good time!

0
Brookster | 14 June 2011 - 2:28pm

Shame on you, Brookster

for enlisting Pat Carty in your evil plan...

1
Mike_H | 14 June 2011 - 2:32pm

Evil plan ?

To me it seems like a bold initiative.

Good for you Brookster.

jackthebiscuit | 14 June 2011 - 2:39pm

Take Her

0
kb | 14 June 2011 - 2:39pm

Go

It could be magic. A night you'll never forget. Get on the phone and book the tickets - it only takes a minute.

3
Leedsboy | 14 June 2011 - 2:42pm

I think you have to....

I speak as someone who has attended the following in the duty of keeping GLW happy. Often it was sister-in-law wot got the tickets so I didn't have much choice :-

M-People
Lighthouse Family
Simply Red

In return I have dragged her to more Bruce shows than I care to mention....."Guess what darling, I'm taking you to Milan for the weekend, and there's a special cultural event to see on Saturday night".....

1
latenitetellyvision | 14 June 2011 - 2:43pm

Go.

Everyone I know who's had anything to do with the tour - either as an audient or as a musician/crew has said it's an amazing show.

0
stimpy | 14 June 2011 - 2:48pm

I am desperate to see Take That

so I vote go go go.

If you really don't want to go, you could always offer to pay for tickets for her and her best friend to go and have a girly night out?

0
Hannah | 14 June 2011 - 2:52pm

Neil Tennant revealed the line up on the recent podcast.....

1st = Pet Shop Boys
2nd = Take That as a 4 piece (Patience, Rule The World, Shine, etc.)
3rd = Robbie Solo (Angels, Let Me Entertain You, etc)
Top of the bill = Take That as a 5 piece.

0
Almost Simon | 14 June 2011 - 2:55pm

Then, for an encore, they all appear on stage together

for a mammoth jam on Johnny B. Goode and Freebird.

Maybe...

6
stimpy | 14 June 2011 - 2:59pm

Does Lulu come on for that?

If so I might go..

0
Patrick Crowther | 15 June 2011 - 11:53am

As someone said while watching the Relight My Fire video

... "the Luvvers have aged very well, haven't they?"

0
Douglas | 18 June 2011 - 9:57am

Ohhhhhhhhhhh

I really really wish I was going now. Sounds brilliant.

0
Hannah | 14 June 2011 - 4:28pm

Oh dear

you'd only be disappointed.....

0
el toro calvo grande | 14 June 2011 - 4:32pm

The other perspective

It sounds fucking hideous. Avoid. Take her out for dinner or something. I am coming out in hives at the thought of sitting through that lot. Unless you can take an intravenous drip of irony juice. Arrrrgh. Sorry, pop pickers.

Twangothan | 14 June 2011 - 6:46pm

Took my wife

a couple of years ago to see them at Wembley where she had "the best night of her life", mine wasn't bad either I just had to pretend I was Howard when we got home and she was extremely happy and enthusiastic! Anyway she refused to go this time because Robbie is back, I haven't the heart to tell her that we could have gone and seen her boys and been on the way home before the smug faced, attention seeking, bandwagon jumping, Stoke based cabaret act had even stepped on stage and pulled "that" face.

0
Dave Amitri | 14 June 2011 - 10:59pm

Which face

this one?

0
Dr Volume | 14 June 2011 - 11:57pm

Take her.

Then you should both leave after PSB.

2
Handsome.P.Wonderful | 14 June 2011 - 3:47pm

Let them entertain you

Went to see them in Manchester on Saturday with the GLW. A thoroughly entertaining show, with hits coming at you all night from both PSB and TT (in all their various incarnations).

Sound was excellent for a stadium gig, effects, lighting and staging pretty damned excellent. The crew work their arses off across a large area of stage which seems to get taken apart and reassembled several times through the night.

And, yes, the audience does consist of 50,000 screaming cougars, MILF's and GILF's but, hey, thats not such a bad thing. I can think of worse ways of earning a shitload of brownie points.

3
el toro calvo grande | 14 June 2011 - 4:10pm

Thousands of screaming MILFs

That sounds like heaven.

0
jackthebiscuit | 17 June 2011 - 7:22pm

This is the third thread here where I've had to say:

Go. It will be awesome. I'll be there on Saturday.

I went to see them in 1994 as an ironic studenty gesture. I came out of the gig evangelical about the medicinal powers of pop music.

Go. Go. Go.

DrJ | 14 June 2011 - 5:09pm

You lot don't know you're born...

When I had to impress Mrs Mickey for her birthday a few years back, it was to go and see Barry Manilow, supported by (wait for it) Bobby Davro!

Actually, Bazza puts on a pretty good show, but even the blue-rinsers didn't know what to make of The Davro...

1
Metal Mickey | 14 June 2011 - 5:15pm

My cousin

went to Sunderland with her 5-year old daughter. They loved it.

Even if you're not over keen on the music (and they do have some passable tunes, don't they?), then just go and enjoy what is, by all accounts, a great show. And you'll be in the good books. No brainer, really...

0
illuminatus | 14 June 2011 - 5:26pm

Bring her

I'll be there on Saturday too.

I've seen them 4 times before and they've never failed to impress.

If you don't enjoy it, I'll give you your money back*.

* I will in me hole.

0
doubleyoubee | 14 June 2011 - 5:27pm

Pet Shop Boys

Guess I am going to rain on the parade. Love PSB on disc but saw them live last year and they were exceedingly dull. Like watching paint dry if you ask me. About as much atmosphere as an empty bar in Wolverhampton.

0
Steve Turner | 14 June 2011 - 7:23pm

My mate got dragged along by his

lady and claims to have thoroughly enjoyed it. This enraged me so much I changed the subject so have been spared the details. I saw them on their first comeback tour and thought it dull.
Just remember, a portion of every ticket bought goes into Barlow's Tory pockets and probably onto Cameron's next election campaign. Bunch of arse.

1
Mr Fade | 14 June 2011 - 7:46pm

Gosh, do you really consider the publicly stated political

affiliations of every entertainer/author before you give them your money? That must make choosing entertainment awfully restricting.

0
stimpy | 14 June 2011 - 7:50pm

No I don't.

Just teasing really. I loved The Jam even though they advocated voting Tory. I loved Kenny Everett, quite like Gary Numan and can even happily listen to various Phil Collins tracks nowadays. I just think Take That are wildly overpraised and overplayed. Their current transformation to edgy doom-synthers is nothing less than preposterous.

1
Mr Fade | 15 June 2011 - 11:48am

My sis went on Saturday in Manchester & loved it.

I baby-sat my 20 month old nephew so she could go. Aren't I kind?

0
andielou | 14 June 2011 - 7:57pm

I'm in.

Many thanks for your responses. I think I knew what to do all along..

I've done the right thing. Tickets ordered. A night of pop bliss awaits me. Or a night of hideous fromage served up by a cash-pocketing Tory-supporting chancer.

Either way, I think three Springsteen gigs on her part equals one Take That on mine.

And, do you know what? I'm rather looking forward to it now.

Thanks, Massive!

2
John Connolly | 14 June 2011 - 9:23pm

Good for you sir

it's not really a gig anyway is it? It's a sort of Circus/Musical Theatre production. A bit of razzle dazzle innit. I'd quite like to have seen the Shoppies (who do a brisk run through the hits apparently, all killer no filler).

0
Dr Volume | 14 June 2011 - 10:52pm

I saw them at the Point in 2006

To keep the then-Ms B happy.

Had an absolute ball. A great show, featuring a group that had loosened-up and learned to laugh at itself and that produced a lot of really very good pop music.

Being one of 500 straight men in an audience of thousands upon thousands of Irish yummy mummies was merely coincidental, your honour.

3
JamesB | 14 June 2011 - 9:26pm

hmmm....

*fires up ticketmaster.ie*

Irish Yummy Mummies

I suspect they'll be fairly thin on the ground at Nick Cave/Grinderman. Ho-hum.

0
Pat Carty | 14 June 2011 - 10:48pm

Lady g

went tonight in Cardiff. I stayed behind and watched my new Caravan DVD. I think we both had fun.
