Intelligent Life On Planet Rock
The sun has got his hat on so let's do the Randomizer!
Posted by David Hepworth on 20 March 2009 - 11:21am.
It's our equivalent of musical "profiling". You put your MP3 player or program on "random" or " shuffle" and then read off the titles of the first five songs that come up and the artists responsible. Cheat and we will know and snigger at you from behind our hands. As is customary, I shall go first.
1. Steely Dan: Don't Take Me Alive
2. Simon & Garfunkel: The Sound Of Silence
3. Rachael Yamagata: Elephants
4. Boccherini: Symphony In D Minor
5. Cat Stevens: Father & Son

Black i-pod 80GB
1. Lunatic and Fire/Julian Cope/World Shut Your Mouth: lovely pastoral hymn, especially welcome in a week of numerous mentions, voice and behaviour, in other strands.

3. Jammin'/Bob Marley & the Wailers/One Love - the Very Best of: One of my least favourite Marley songs actually.
4. I'm Yours if You Want Me/Chris Thile/How to Grow a Woman From the Ground: the ex Nickel Creek mandolin wiz

Yes, that's how Spotificated I've become. Sigh.
Having mulled this over...
I'm with Archie on this one. It occurred to me that when making my selection it was the first time I'd fired up iTunes in weeks. Are the Randomizer's days numbered, I wonder?
Nah.....
Spotify is still so incomplete as to be a diversion for when I am system recovering i-tunes. Plus I can never remember what I want to listen to unless I have prompts and clues. "Anything" (except many of the one you might want) is too wide a palate. Listening to ther pod more than ever thease days, having got it all back from the brink.

Yes, I'm a bit of a musical Luddite. Though I do have a soft spot for Elbow, courtesy The Word's well-intentioned harping. You also turned me on, belatedly, to the wonders of The Office (USA). Start with series 2 as series 1 is just a re-hash of the UK original. Dwight in the USA version (Gareth as was) is a terrifying comic creation.

By George
Garnett Mimms - Tell Me Baby
Super Furries - Cloudberries
George Formby - Riding In The TT Races
Mr Scruff - Shelf Wobbler
Lyle Lovett & His Large Band - Up In Indiana
Curiously enough, it's the Formby that has given (and still gives) the greatest pleasure of those five. By far.
Garnett Mimms!
Nice to see a truly great singer getting a mention, even it's due to whatever fiendishly complicated algorithms determine which song comes up next on the randomiser. I love Garnett Mimms, especially when he's singing songs as stellar as It Was Easier To Hurt Her, A Quiet Place, As Long As I have You, and so on. Must get some onto my Iphone. *heads off to emusic...*
Mimms O'Clock!
My iPod seems to love him too. I've only got the 16-track Best Of on there but GM seems to appear a disproportionate amounts of times when I'm a-shuffling.

Dolly's call for a Sylvian re-evaluation
Dolly, think you might have a long wait for Messrs. Ellen and Hepworth to re-evaluate Sylvian/Japan, both gentlemen are on record as not being fans.
Mark even stated recently that perhaps Phil Collins merited re-evaluation (for giving a half decent speech at the Folk Awards and working on some of John Martyns's weaker material), so David Sylvian is clearly low down the Word editor's list of which artists on Virgin in the 80s/90s to revisit if he is beneath cheeky chappy tax dodging Buster!
If you want to surround yourself with like-minded Sylvian/Japan acolytes (of which there are still a surprising and highly vocal number) join the yahoo group via the frankly astonishing (and ever so slightly frightening) Nightporter fan site: www.nightporter.co.uk. Here they chat about important stuff, like whether Scissor Sisters' 'Other Side' is perhaps a reference to Japan's 'Other Side of Life'?
Kevin
p.s. Don't know if you know it but Sylvian's last album, Nine Horses' 'Snow Borne Sorrow' (ft. Sakamoto, Jansen, Stina Nordenstam and others), is his best and most accessible since 'Secrets of the Beehive', a really lovely record. One of Observer Music Monthly's albums of the year (from Amy Lawrence I think) when it came out, but, sadly, not so much as a by your leave from our chums at The Word...You might also be interested in a bluesy duet between Sylvian and Joan as Policewoman on Steve Jansen's Slope album which (unlike Nine Horses) is on itunes.
