The Specials - Live in Nottingham

woodface's picture

I accompanied the wife to see The Specials on Saturday and despite not really knowing more than about 6 songs I really enjoyed it. I don't think the hyperbole surrounding the live shows is really merited but, as I am not huge fan, I do not possess the store of goodwill required for such occassions. Terry Hall manages to be charismatic without really doing anything, whenever he left the stage it was just not the same. As ever my enjoyment was marred by the f*ckin' camera phone cretins (I was in the nodding section by the sound desk so you know who you are). Why do people do this? You have paid handsomely to see the long awaited reunion only to spend all night staring into a small LED screen. Let me apprise these people of two few key facts; your shots will not come out and nobody is interested in your pathetic 'look where I am' email/picture messages. As an aside, am I alone in thinking that 40+ males in harrington jackets, burgundy doc martins, fred perry's and long sideburns is a bit sad? I saw Springsteen in the summer but resisted the temptation to tote the requisite 80's gear I would have worn when first becoming a fan during the 'Born in the USA' era.

The Liverpool Gig

I went to the Liverpool gig on the tour, now whilst I was definitely a fan from back in the day, I was also sceptical about the reformation and only decided to go a few days before when an old mate had a spare ticket. I thoroughly enjoyed the gig though it wasn't quite as manic as a Specials gig from back in the day, I suppose stage invasions during the encores are really a thing of the past but I did have a good time nonetheless. I do know what you mean about all the 40 year old people dressing up though, on the train going to the gig was a man of similar age to me, wearing a two-tone suit and a pair of three tassel loafers and they were pristine! He must have had the whole outfit in mothballs just waiting for the Specials to reform. I thought it was bizarrely sad and impressive at the same time.

Oh and having been to the gig, I'm definitely of the opinion that Jerry Dammers is missing out on something not being involved. It's also like 30 years on, the time is just about perfect for them, economy is up the creek minus the paddle and the nazi's are on the rise again, now if only we could all get on stage like back in the day!
