The Smithereens - "Behind The Wall of Sleep"

Sheev's picture

The ugliest band ever perhaps - or at least until The Hold Steady came along - but they made the damn fine racket titled above

One of my favourite singles ever

With Suzanne Vega on backing vocals. Gorgeous gorgeous song.

A brilliant live version of Blue Period

The Smithereens and, Belinda Carlisle in her 'hubbadah hubbadah' period.

I think it is also classic mid-period Nicky Horne, too.

This is the precise moment where it all went wrong

at least in the UK. If he had only worn a hat they could have been massive...

A very astute point Mr C

Perfect pop needs to be conveyed by perfect popsters. The long bald mullett is not a good look on anybody - aside from an associate of Tony Soprano's. It's not a good look on him either - but you wouldn't tell him.

In the old days when the uglies - Lieber and Stoller say - wrote the songs - and the pretties - The Everly Bros say - sang 'em. All was well with the world.

Then those darn Beatles came along and everyone felt they had to write 'em and sing 'em just like The Beatles did.

Problem was the songs weren't as good as the Beatles. And they weren't as pretty as them either.
