The Singing Drummer
Posted by Mousey on 21 May 2010 - 5:26am.
I just watched a doco on TV about The Monkees, and not for the first time did it occur to me that Micky Dolenz was a great pop singer. Interestingly his light but strong voice has similarities to Don Henley, another singing drummer.
Apart from Karen Carpenter, who are the other great skinspersons who could also handle vocal chores?

The greatest of them all
Levon Helm, surely.
Brilliant singer, brilliant drummer ... And a really cool name.
Of course!
I knew I'd forgotten someone. Yeah Levon is probably my number one over the others in the OP. I love his last 2 solo albums too - something about the feel between the singing and the drums that helps everything else fit in the slot.
At last
an excuse to post this rather fantastic version of King Harvest...

Is there any Band better?
Edit mode: sorry I realised after my original post that I've crashed this thread and posted vids of non singing drummers. I meant well ;)
At their best the Band are just amazing, IMHO. I've never seen that King Harvest clip and I have to confess being surprised to see Richard Manuel sing it as I'd always assumed it was Levon. I guess I associate Richard with singing in a higher key. Like this one
Having said all that if I was tortured until I had to only choose one singer from the Band it would be Rick Danko. To have 3 singers who were that good in one band is almost unfair
This is great too, Rick and Levon right on the money
The 'Orrible 'Oo with 'Bell Boy'...
alright, 'singing' might be stretching it a bit, but I love it just the same.
Topper Headon sings "When Ivan Meets G.I.Joe" on Sandinista!
Great skinsperson.
Sadly not a great vocalist.
Grand Funk's Don Brewer
with some awesome cowbell going on...
and also, Carmine Appice with BBA, 1973
I remember TOTP...
... and Squeeze were on - and Glenn Tilbrook was drumming and singing (did I dream this?).
He was tempted...
by the drum kit of another.
Let's not forget…
Another No.1 pop pickers!
Don Henley
in my view is more of a drumming singer. He has one of the great voices and happens to be a decent drummer as well. His finest moment:
What
a
voice.
Proper singing.
Phil Collins
much maligned in some quarters, but always a great drummer...
I don't think he sings AND drums though, does he?
Isn't it always one or t'other?
I knew I should have gone with this clip instead..!
Andy Sturmer
Of Jellyfish.
Selfishly doubling up here
by adding my favourite
Standing, singing, power-popping drummer. And man, those harmonies....
The Romantics
Ah tell thee
Doesn't the drummer out of The Kaiser Cheifs sing along with the one at the front?
Where are they now?
Robert Wyatt.
You tend to forget, don't you?
Jacob's Mouse
I used to stumble across this rowdy lot at gigs all the time in the early 90s.
Not much evidence of it from this video but the drummer was definitely also the singer
Dave Grohl
Not sure if he does both at the same time
The HJH's
very own Richard Starkey. Octopuses' Garden, anyone?
Yes!
Although I prefer Don´t Pass Me By.
Don´t pass me by
Don´t make me cry
Don´t make me blue
Cause you know darling
I love only you

Dennis Wilson
Only sang BVs whilst drumming but he came out from behind from traps to sing this...
Four Seasons
No time to google but when F Valli wasn't singing I seem to recall the drummer handling vocals when they were shown on ToTP in the early 70s. One called Silver Star I think - maybe part of Oh What a Night too?
Buddy Miles "Them changes"
A great record. A pretty decent voice. Played drums for Hendrix. What more could you need.
Well - how about a swingin' paardy at The Hef's pad. Check this out, groovers! I didn't know Austin Powers was a documentary.
Multi instrumentalist, drummer and singer
