The Silver Seas on 'Later'

tiggerlion's picture

I recorded Later & watched it today. I thought The Silver Seas were quite ordinary. My excited anticipation was cruelly dashed by a lack of charisma and dull tunes.

My dilemma is that I've ordered their CD from t'internet but it hasn't been despatched. Should I cancel my order or is the CD much better than their performance on Later?

It's a far better CD than their lacklustre Later appearance

would have you believe. I've had both of theirs for ages, and played them to bits, and I even went out of my way to get their debut when they were called The Bees, but even I found the Jools Holland performance a trifle flat and uninspiring. No idea what was up with them that evening, but it would have put me off too. My advice is to stick with your purchase.

The Return Of Pub Rock

That's what the Later performance made me think.

Meanwhile, The Civil Wars, the gothic-folk duo; their album is GORGEOUS. No seriously, damn lovely.

Completely agree

Both albums are a joy. Tuneful, joyous melodies, well played and well sung.

I thought they sounded good

Especially with the surround sound jacked up loud. The Civil Wars annoyed me beyond belief, however!

Best band in the world?

They weren't even the best band on Later...

I bought both CDs

on the strength of the hype, if you will, in the mag and on the blog. Initially I was underwhelmed to say the least. They are growing on me but they still sound a bit like a Josh Rouse B side collection.

Good, very competently played, well-written and melodic

but derivative. It all sounds like something I've heard before.
The first song on Jools had a strong Hall & Oates knockoff vibe to the tune and I thought I heard a good bit of Curtis Mayfield on the second. If they were playing somewhere on the bill at an event I was at anyway, I'm sure I'd enjoy their performance but I wouldn't go purposely out to see them and I doubt I'll be buying their CDs or downloads.

Hall & Oates

Yeah. I've had a strong H&O vibe from them, as well as a good few whiffs of Jackson Browne. As I've said before, I think they're tolerable, but are they the best band in the world? No, obviously they're not. They're a fairly competent pop/rock band. That really is the very best I can find to say about them.

Driving darn sarf this weekend

It suddenly clicked who they reminded me of.

The Trash Can Sinatras.

Except not Scottish, obv.

'Another Bad night's Sleep', in particular, could have replaced 'Obscurity Knocks' as the lead-off track on 'Cake'.

This, by the way, is not a bad thing.

Ah! The Trashcans...

One of life's little secrets who, like a bottle of guid red wine, get better as the years progress. I'm off to Spotify to check out those Silver Seas. If they're half as good etc etc blah blah blah....

I like the Trashcans a lot.

For my money, the Silver Seas don't touch them.

didn't hear any H&O

at the islington gig in september. But the only decent number they did that night - the encore number - suggested someone had spent a lot of time alone with Astral Weeks.

A thought

I like The Silver Seas. But no one, as far as I'm aware, has yet pointed out what my daughter alerted me to the first time she heard them. They sound quite uncannily like Jackson Browne*. Sometimes.

*Obviously, a good thing.

*cough*

Lucas... seen this post?

Just saying. ;-)

Oh dear

Sorry. I'm tired. As you were.

Lucas Hare | 9 October 2011 - 9:13pm

They were like

a pub band. A better than average pub band granted. But a pub band all the same.

The whole programme was under par

Tony Bennett was pretty good ... with his own pianist. Laura Marling and Miles Kane I could take or leave. I remember thinking at what point what a remarkable affect two humans, a piece of wood and some wires could have on my soul (during The Civil Wars) but it didn't last.

I'm feeling lethargic and tired so can't be bothered cancelling my order for The Silver Seas CD. I do hope they aren't too much like Jackson Browne or Hall & Oates. That wouldn't be good.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll let you know what I think when it arrives.

I just got obsessed with the wig.

They showed some footage of a young Tony Bennett and his hair was very receding. Now he has half a sheep on his bonce. I know in these Rooneydays it shouldn't matter, and he must have decided his fanbase needed him to be hirsuite but I believe in the bald.
Silver Seas? Love the records. Didn't particularly impress me live but I don't care. They're not the best band in the world but Danny was giving them a deserved leg-up with a smidge of hype.
Laura Marling? She sounds like Joni Mitchell. Is that good or bad? You decide - I can't.

Mr Fade | 9 October 2011 - 11:26pm

Yes!

Mr. Bennett clearly has a very good 'piece', or some sort of magical weave/plug thing going on.
He's extremely cool though.

Georgedivided | 10 October 2011 - 10:08am

He's amazingly cool.

For anyone who didn't see itfc1959's great thread featuring TB and Lady GaGa, here it is. It made me smile for hours. They're like a little two-person constellation of their own.

I enjoyed the programme

I thought Laura Marling was really excellent, and while the Silver Seas are unlikely ever to excite me as much live as they do on record, I thought their first song (The Best Things In Life) was a joy: taut, snappy, tuneful and concise. Yes, Daniel Tashian does sound like Jackson Browne, but as I've said before in other contexts, JB didn't write these songs. The Civil Wars really annoyed me - they're just not as hot-to-trot as they obviously think they are.

Regarding the Cvil Wars, whose music I could take or leave,

I couldn't help but think that the female half of the act reminded me very much of a young Grace Slick. Without that voice, sadly, but with the same slightly feral sexuality.

0
Vulpes Vulpes | 10 October 2011 - 9:06am

I like the voice

And I do know what you mean. Was almost uncomfortable to watch, because it did seem directed at the guy. You wouldn't know she was married to somebody else, and a committed Christian to boot. That performance made feel like she was going to be drinking somebody's blood at some point later that night.

0
SimonL | 10 October 2011 - 11:13am

Surprised

There's so little mention of Miles Kane - I thought he kicked the proverbial out of all of them...
