The Russell Brand Poll

Following his controversial appearance as the host of the MTV Awards the other night, America is asking "is this guy what you Brits call funny?"

Well, is he?

He's both

isn't he?

Clever bloke but...

The constant slippage of his material below navel level is trying, though typical of an ex-fat boy who now finds himself an object of desire; his radio show (I've tried) should be renamed The Vagina Monologue. And he should accept that he's one of those unfortunates who can't grow a proper beard.

Graham Johns | 9 September 2008 - 4:14pm

Just awful

Unfunny one-trick pony who looks like a woman with a beard. That hair's beyond a joke too.

And how soon he's turned his back on the UK to 'make it' in the US. I don't want to be cruel, but I'm hoping he won't take off over there because I can't stomach much more of him.

If you had a third option...

'He can, at times, be rather erudite and interesting and at others a total buffoon', I would have pressed that.

Patrick Crowther | 9 September 2008 - 6:15pm

Not reallllllly....

'Turning his back on the UK to make it in the US'?

Well, if you include the fact that he still does his very funny weekly radio 2 show from 'Americy' (as he would have it), then no.

I know Brand has been criticised a lot in the past, and now, but on radio, I find him an articulate, funny guy. It seems that when a camera is in front of him he turns into somethng different. Odd really. I have converted many friends by telling them to give the Radio 2 show/podcast a chance - he comes across very differently. Go on.

Both?

A friend met him and said he was charm personified. Though she would say that, wouldn't she?

Andrew F | 10 September 2008 - 8:53pm

he is a good writer tho

i find he's delivery really irritating BUT underneath the uber-fopness he is actually very funny..

haven't read his book so can't call on that but his observer column is generally well observed and occasionally fantastically surreal..

so a yes and a no from me too

Carwash Casteneda | 12 September 2008 - 12:46pm

He's just overexposed

First came aware of him on telly, he bored me and annoyed me equally. Tuned into his radio show when he was on 6music, thought is was dire, self indulgent rubbish.

Then one night I was out at a comedy club in a very small pub, he was the unannounced surprise turn (the room itself couldn't have held more than about a hundred people, he was way bigger than this at this time) and he was genuinely fabulous.

The lesson? I guess the chap needs to do less stuff and only do honed "material" to us members of the public.

Fascinating...

...but not in a good way. Like a car crash on the motorway. You know you shouldn't look , but...

Russell Brand

Russell Brand

Had heard so much about this character a year or two ago I endured the first episode of his own show on C4. I had the same experience as when I first saw Reeves'n'Mortimer: I watched in disbelief through my fingers with my hands over my face. To make matters worse, he had that odious pair from the execrable Little Britain on as well - stands to reason I suppose.
I personally find him totally unamusing (but then I've a penis and an IQ over 50) and experienced no shortage of schadenfreude when he was utterly outclassed by Merton and Hislop on HIGNFY. The yanks won't dig him - they've got common sense in the comedy stakes, so we'll be stuck with the twat. 'Booky Wook', my arse.
