The Runt
Posted by stimpy on 19 February 2010 - 11:30am.
Following the recent AWATS gigs and the associated thread on here, I was inspired to have a bit of a Toddathon yesterday.
I could wax lyrical for hundreds of words about his oeuvre but the one tune I haven't been able to stop singing all day is THIS one:
A catchy tune, a big singalong chorus, a ginchy little bass middle eight and a 'stuff it to the man' lyric. What's not to like?

Yes, but is there a better
Rundgren tune than Just One Victory?
Shame he could only play London...
This is my favourite Toddsong...
(Includes explanation of "Mellow" for German audience that was bound to confuse them further...)
Yeah but obviously
he ripped off Prince right?
I mean, Youve got the date on this wrong surely?
Surely.
I do love...
...the Ever-Popular Tortured Artist Effect, especially this tune...
As ever, I keep coming back to this... (what a superb video)
Im listening to
'Todd' the album at this minute
And how...
...is that working out for you?
Well, all good but...
for not hearing it earlier and for missing out on Todd almost completely until recently, I feel like a 'schlub'.
No, make that a 'schmeil'.
Better to discover late...
..than pencil must be led. Or something.
How are you getting on with Healing?
Havent played it yet, like to let things 'soak' or
'marinade' if you will.
Will report at first opportunity.
I was going to ask you but will put it to the massive -
'Utopia' - where do i start, progress and finish?
after Just One Victory...
The Wheel is my all-time-top-ten-Todd.

Listening to the new Field Music CD...
...prompted me to dig out this one by his Toddness - better on the original record as those lovely springy guitars come through crystal clear.
(And he doesn't introduce the sodding band at the start).
I've been bu-ur-ur-urrrrned in my prime...
...what a song.
Thirded...
it's my favourite Toddsong.
If this is really a live vocal...
...it's pretty incredible.
Difficult to tell...
...but the lead and BVs are very similar to their recorded versions, aren't they? The BVs actually make me more suspicious than the lead.
Whatevs. I don't begrudge Todd a little trickery, if it is so, but his voice was in fine fettle at Hammersmith, so who knows?.
many too many but...
probably The Last Ride
Me Too...
"Back to the Bars" was the first Todd album i bought and it sounds great live.
Thankee
Mr. Pop and I'm one of the few (TR included) who doesn't think AWATS is his classic, for me that belongs to Todd. Apart from Saw the Light this double ellpee (with poster) was my intro to his wonderment. Sons of 1984 can still raise my spirits on an off day and No.1 Lowest Common Denominator never fails to take me back to that first, 'altered state' listening.
You should check out his very candid interview on Planet Rock's Listen Again, you have 24hrs left or* I could send you my Audio Hijack of it.
*that offer is open to all on here
What show, JB?
I'd love to hear this. What show was it on and I'll try to catch it in time?
I just tried
a screenshot

A classic
I have the poster somewhere, though my name isn't on it. I also love the Todd album, but not all of it. Trimmed of the usual TR over-indulgences, it could have been the best TR album by a long way. Imagine if the track listing was this:
Side one
1. "How About a Little Fanfare?" (1:03)
2. "I Think You Know" (3:04)
3. "The Spark of Life" (6:23)
4. "An Elpee's Worth of Toons" (2:09)
5. "A Dream Goes On Forever" (2:21)
6. "Heavy Metal Kids" (4:16)
7. "The Last Ride" (4:48)
Side two
1. "No 1. Lowest Common Denominator" (5:12)
2. "Useless Begging" (3:40)
3. "Sidewalk Cafe" (2:15)
4. "Izzat Love?" (1:55)
5. "Don't You Ever Learn?" (6:04)
6. "Sons of 1984" (4:34)
Perfect.
Never doubt the voice
just too many songs to choose from, but this is an obvious omission from the classics
agreed
and don't forget I Think You Know, I managed to... well you really don't want to know what a young longhair at art school did
a girl was involved
Thanks J.B...
just finished listening to the broadcast...he,s a lot more modest than i expected, how could he write songs like"Wailing Wall","Be Nice to Me" etc and not rate himself as a top songwriter!! And it was good to hear J.O.V on the radio for a change, might even get him a new fan base!
I'll go to bed
a happy man, glad you enjoyed it and yes he was really open and candid, especially about Fat Outta Hell
That's a great version of Cliche
Thanks
"I Saw The Light"
is the best pop record in the history of mankind other Laura Nyro's "Stoned Soul Picnic" and Maxine Brown's "Oh No Not My Baby".
Sorry, couldn't resist....
Me, Maxine Brown, Gary US Bonds and a couple of others. Guess which is me...
The one in the
orange and black dress?
Suits you, sir.
Aaaaah
the seventies, they were great.
You must be knocking on a bit now then pocket
Oh, and 'Healing'? just bought it and
has opened up my third eye forever!
Healing part 1 - just IS Prince circa 'Lovesexy'
Wonderful.
This....
...is a most heartwarming development.
Tiny Demons
my copy of the ellpee has the free single, I picked it up in a mall in Atlanta in 1988 for a $ - shocking!
I will DOUBLE what you paid for it!
Come on - lets get this deal done!
even though my t/t
was banished to the attic about 10 years ago, I can't part with my vinyl
I still peruse album sleeves now and then when listening to their digital counterparts
sorry
'Healing' - Did I say 'third eye'?
After 6 repeat plays - Im now in bed listening on headphones with Mrs G snoringly unaware - Ive now found a fourth and fifth eye opened by this fantastic record.
A fucking revelation.
Made more remarkable by the fact that (although this is probably belied by the effusive character of most of my posts) that I am generally hard work.
Good show
I had a similar epiphany when I first heard Healing in the late-80s. Good man, D.
Went for a 'run'
this evening.
'That was a long one - well done' said Mrs G.
'Yep - you got to put the work in' I said.
53 mins and 38 seconds.
The exact length of 'Healing' (plus the two singles on the cd version)
I spent most of it walking.
Playing air synth.
Been giving it a bit of thought
And I reckon my top five LPs that have been produced by Todd would be:
@ 5: L by Steve Hillage
@ 4: War Babies by Hall & Oates [it's a Utopia album!]
@ 3: Yo Yo by Bourgeois Tagg
@ 2: Remote Control by The Tubes
@ 1: Skylarking by XTC [Magnificent]
Of course, could change next week. Apart from Skylarking obviously.
Listening to the first The Pursuit of Happiness CD just now actually and it's pretty darn good.
Okay if I just go for
@ 5
@ 4
and
@ 2
I haven't heard the rest, I did once have a Grand Funk Railroad album he did, but I don't like to talk about it...
