The Rest of Steely Dan

clivetemple's picture

They release a 33 track Best Of compilation (Showbiz Kids) and this doesn't even make it. A measure of a band I'm appreciating more and more these days...

Two more that didn't make that best of...

They made 7 classic albums in a row

The only sensible course of action is to buy them all, or the 'Citizen Steely Dan' boxset which includes 'Here at the Western World'

Would love to see them play this live: Kings

You're absolutely right

a 'Best of Steely Dan' is a pointless exercise since their best work is spread across several faultless LPs. In this day and age, if anyone wants to dip a toe in the water they have no need to to go down the 'best of' route, just go on Spotify and work your way through starting with 'Can't Buy A Thrill'

I think

Cant Buy A Thrill is their most poppy album, not much jazz, just very good songs

There isn't much jazz on any of their albums...

they were far more of an r&b group than jazz rock.

I found

Aja and Gaucho fairly jazzy and they are my two favourite Dan albums. I just think that "Cant Buy A Trill is Steely Dan's "pop" album chock full of great tunes

I agree!

Dug it out the other day and its one great tune after another. Terrible cover though. Might be another thread there. Great albums with terrible covers, although must have been done already. Most of their output has a not very good cover. Aja looks like it should be great but the lack of contrast makes the lady barely visible. The shadows on Two Against Nature isn't too good either. You would imagine that what with them being the aesthetes they are they would have put some quality control on those.

Home At Last

a beautifully crafted riposte to the customary accusation The Dan lack soul. Don hasn't sounded this cut up since that guy named Vinnie - the one with the gold tooth? - headed who knows where with his stash and that chick who said all the right things about Godard and Miles. Now, she's gone. Vinnie's gone. And worse still - no drugs. Shit, this ship ain't coming in any time this side of soon.

Royal Scam

I think the first 3 albums Cant buy a thrill, Countdown to Ecstasy and Pretzel Logic were sublime but then I listened to The Royal Scam again recently and playing on this album is unbelievable Sign in Stranger and Green Earrings in particular. And then you get a classic single like Haitian Divorce. Phew.

agree

The Dan were a classic group and as has been rightly said every album was a gem. I've even converted my 25 year old son to appreciate their virtues.

Thanks!

This thread just prompted me to finish a OCD mini project I started a while ago to break "Citizen Steely Dan" up into its original albums with correct art work etc. Phew! To think I hadn't done it. That much Steely Dan looking at you it's hard to decide what to listen to - currently on "Show Biz Kids" by way of "Josie" and "Home at last". perfection.

I hope you've...

... got the correct artwork for the FM single - only then have you got proper OCD.

I have now....

Phew. Close shave. It occurs to me I have a CD of early tracks, demos etc which I haven't got in iTunes that I'd better add.

2 more that could easily have made it

Barrytown and Caves of Altamira

Plus one that is a scandalous omission - Razor Boy

Caves of Altamira

What a song. Cannot imagine anything like it being recorded these days.

Any man south

of the Rio Grande is the

King Of The World

as far as I know

0
Sheev | 21 November 2011 - 10:15pm

I once used the line

'No marigolds in the promised land' as a magazine headline, for a bet.

0
Nick Duvet | 21 November 2011 - 10:40pm

This reminds me of

the only time in my life when I wrote graffiti - in the toilets at Teviot Row during the Edinburgh Fringe.

"No marigolds in the promised land
There's a hole in the ground where they used to grow"

These lyrics had a depth of meaning to me then that are lost now.
The older you get, the less ....

(Regarding the post above - is it not "Any man left on the Rio Grande"?)

0
piggers | 21 November 2011 - 11:00pm

you're right

it's left...

"South! South? Eat me Sheev. Heh heh. Get a load of this guy Walt. Calls himself a fan?"

She loved the million dollar words I say. She loved the candy and flowers That I bought her.
"Pearl Of The Quarter". Not the best of Dan but still better than the best of most.

Steely Dan debut single

Picked up a copy of the `Dans` first single yesterday,at a car boot!
Dallas/ Sail The Waterway
Not heared either before, and both really good songs that would have worked on the first album.
According to Wikipedia, the single was dismissed by B+F as a `stinko`
