The Rainbow Connection

So Mark Cavendish is World Champion after a brilliant GB team ride and great individual finish.

The last 3 hours of the race were pure tension. I'm exhausted just from watching.

Sports personality of the year ought to be nailed on. But it won't be. Doesn't matter though. After 25 years watching cycling it's amazing stuff seeing so much GB talent.

I think he will get SPOTY.

The only other contenders are Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke. The golf vote will be split. And there's an awful lot of cycling fans out there who want Cav to be recognised.

Resurrecting my own post but

I'm genuninely still buzzing from watching this yesterday. One of the great sporting moments for me.

Totally different from watching a Tour stage. I don't have it in me to support a works team, and so it tends to be a case of appreciating the effort an skill and seeing what happens. And of course the serious interest of the GB team in the World Champs has been limited in recent years. But yesterday to see a team good enough to be in control while the the rest of the world did the best they could to knock them off (nearly succeeding in the last 1km only for sheer brilliance to win through) was genuinely electrifying. The fact that it was the culmination of several years of effort to earn GB the right to field a team of 8 riders only adds to it. Much as I've enjoyed the cricket team's remarkable dominance this year, I still reckong this shades it for me.

Not a dog's chance

Even if he deserves it by miles. Le Tour and this race don't enter the public consciousness like the Open. And from a sentimental perspective, Clarke will walk it.

One of the wierd things about cycling in the Worlds (and the Olympics) is that there is an individual medal for what is nowadays such an incredible team effort. Is there any other sport like that? In athletics, isn't it illegal to have a collective race plan for runners from the same country (even tho everyone knows it happens?

Respect to Cav for always crediting his train.
