The Phantom Band
Posted by goatboyuk69 on 14 March 2009 - 8:33pm.
Just wanted to confirmn that the shout out in the new issue for the Glasgow based Phantoms was a very, very good one indeed.
Genuinely original, great tunes, not afraid of the potentially ridiculous seven minute instrumental and, in their singer, the posessor of the finest scots accented singing voice in popular music - a category containing few entrants admittedly.
I only bought it this afternoon and I've already booked flights to Dublin to see them live in May. Thats how impressed I am!
Try it. Genuine contender for album of the year.
Thanks Word. Despite living near Glasgow and counting myself up to date with the cities music scene I'd never heard of them until this month.

Phantom Band
It's been the album of the last few weeks in the office - Production Editor "Seventies" Mike Johnson saw them live and reported back favourably. And it's on Spotify: http://open.spotify.com/album/0WF378u1dCymLprelvFelQ
It's extraordinary
Its had an impact on me I'd forgotten music could have.
I don't think I've felt this prosetylizing need to give friends copies of an album since the Beta Bands 3 EP's and their incredible live shows at the time.
In case anyone was wondering, no, I have no connection with the band - just blown away by them- but you really should have this music in your life.
BTW Fraser- sorry about the Andy Collins related unpleasntness. Strong drink and a taste for extreme humour and swearing are unpleasant bedfellows.
No worries
I sensed that drink had been taken, hence my leaving it till this morning to chip in my two penneth worth. Time to move on, nothing to see here etc.
And its on eMusic
I love it when that happens - someone recommends something that is good and its on eMusic.
Lee
What do you think?
You really need it on a good stereo - its been superbly well produced - with plenty of bass.
That doo wop bit! Music! Bloody hell!
I haven't had the time to do them justice
but they are up on my spotify playlists and I'll give them another listen as I do the online supermarket shop tonight. On the first listen I thought they were very good - more together than the Beta Band comparison I think I have read somewhere.
Saw them
recently in Newcastle and they were fantastic. Bit Earlies, bit Grandaddy, bit Kraftwerk, very brilliant.
I-Tunes cheap- SHOCK!
It's only £4.74 on I-Tunes - so it is.
Well, after seeing them on the Culture Show...
all I can say is I was spectacularly underwhelmed. I couldn't hear anything of any great interest, and was wondering why they had three guitarists, at least one too many. Voices didn't grab me either. The only thing that I enjoyed was the synth player, who was having some fun and producing some interesting sounds.
Hmm. Musically quite interesting but...
(and it's a big but) a band wouldn't (I hope) put up with a keyboard player who played bum notes or a drummer who couldn't keep time, so why do so many of them put up with singers who can't sing?
Why is the human voice no longer considered to be an important instrument? Throughout all human history, in all cultures, it's the essence of music.
I blame that Ian Curtis, me.
Today's Grauniad
Has a good piece on t'Phantoms:

Band of the year for me!
I bought the album back whenever it came out (February?) and I'm still playing it constantly. And live they are just awesome too.
So now I have a problem. Each December I meet up with some mates and we share our five favourite tracks of the year and five favourite gigs. I'm wondering if I'll be thrown out if all of mine are The Phantom Band!
