The Partridge Family - now there was a band!
This is why the interweb is great. In the Stars You Once Fancied thread Sheev posted a YouTube montage of Gillian Blake, containing the fantastic David Cassidy tune Cherish.
This prompted a bit of a Partridge Family meandering on Spotify and Wikipedia. I have re-discovered how many great pop songs they released. Some may scoff, but considering the music was largely the work of The Wrecking Crew it's nothing to be ashamed about.
I think that, being born in '67, I was too young to be aware of TPF/Cassidy at the time, so they don't have the same negative connotations they may have for people (men, at least) 10 years older.
As well as Cherish, I Think I Love You, Could It Be Forever, How Can I Be Sure, I Am a Clown, I'll Meet You Halfway to name a few are examples of pop music of rare quality.
Some other things I've learned:
*David Cassidy was originally supposed to lip-synch his vocals, but convinced the producers he could sing. He wasn't wrong, imho.
*At the peak of her session playing career, Carol Kaye earned more per year than the president. This is good to know - I kind of assumed they would have received relative peanuts.
*Tommy Tedesco is the most recorded guitarist in history, according to Guitar Player mag.
*The Wrecking Crew also contained Leon Russell, another I've recently discovered (thanks again, Sheev!), who wrote some great tunes for those other 70's pop behemoths The Carpenters
*I didn't know this about the So You Wanna Be a Rock'n'Roll Star hitmakers:
Members of the Wrecking Crew played on the first Byrds single recording, Mr. Tambourine Man, because Columbia didn't trust the skills of Byrd musicians except for Roger McGuinn. On the basis of the success of the single, further recordings of the Byrds were conditional on the success of the single. Subsequently, all the Byrds played on their subsequent recordings.

I Think I Love You
obviously I don't mean you Dougie, I barely know you. The song "I Think I Love You" is so evocative for me. It is one of my earliest musical memories along with The Monkees. Having two older sisters meant that Mr Cassidy was in great prominence in our house. (The Partidge Family and The Style Council, we'll be drummed out of here if we're not careful)
Ooh DougieJ... I Think I Love You....
I have taken *so* much stick over the years for my unrepentant admiration for DC. Yes he was pretty. But also a good blue-eyed soul voice. I still listen and personally rate the (relatively) hit-free Rock Me Baby over his other albums.
The Partridge Family
were probably held back by the fact they had a ten year old boy co-managing them.
