The new 'Who'

Black Type's picture

Well, chaps and chapesses, what's the verdict? A few immediate reactions: Matt Smith was fantasticallybonkers; Karen Gillan was feisty/foxy in equal measure as Amy; the script was sharp, with some great one-liners ("You're Scottish! Fry me something!"); the pace of the action was a bit too frantic; and, as ever, THE MUSIC WAS TOO BLOODY LOUD and drowned out some of said script.
The previews of forthcoming episodes look rather exciting...

I thought it was great

had me smiling and laughing all the way through, had a nice twisty science fiction story. Didn't notice the music and finally released it's the Doctor I like not just the actors who play him. He's just great character.
So straightforward tip top televison and yes the trailer for the rest of the series looked good , were those spitfires attacking a space station? COOL!

Matt Smith

was a lot better than I feared he would be. The opening scenes were a bit slapstick and the plot wasn't very interesting. But the multi-trailer looked interesting.

Doctor Who?

Before tonight, I was basically a Doctor Who virgin, having never watched a complete episode. It had never previously appealed to me. My house-mate, however, is a big fan so I agreed to watch it with him.

Without any particular background information, other than a fleeting knowledge that David Tennant was The Doctor, as were Tom Baker and Christopher Ecclestone at various points in the time and space of history and the BBC, I went in with out any comparisons to make

As The Doctor, I thought Matt Smith was wonderfully eccentric, but never pantomime; he managed to stay on the right line of madness throughout. I'd have to see more of Karen Gillan to make an informed opinion about her acting abilities, but she looked sexy in the police uniform.

I'd watch it again.

Dr Who And The Fatal Kissogram

I thought the new Doctor was great, as was his kissogram companion, the atmosphere of the show seems fresh and magical. The incidental music and the revamped theme are terrible, less is more Murray Gold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The new TARDIS looks beautiful and glad to see there will be more rooms and a swimming pool featured in the series. It all looks very promising indeed and finally at last an episode out of bloody Cardiff!

I thought that they would probably get it right

I thought that they would probably get it right, and they have. Looking forward to the rest of the series!

Wow and wow.

A new doctor and companion, watched for the first time in HD. Matt certainly plays bonkers better than DT but will he be able to play serious when the mood is needed. Just keep Captain Jack away from him, the dirty bounder...

Stopped watching during the Tennant years

(despite liking him as a person/ him in other things) but really enjoyed tonight. Great casting for 'we and 'im. Will come back for more.

Perfect.

I hooted and squealed with delight. Proper, scary, funny, mental gorgeousness. Wonderful script, great new TARDIS, Karen Gillan is the most beautiful woman on TV in decades (plus, FAB character to get her teeth into), and Matt Smith just IS the Doctor.

New theme tune is the only niggle. Sounds like late nineties Big Beat. Very dated. But that's mealy-mouthed pedantry. DW hasn't been close to this good since the penultimate Donna episode.

GLW

The GLW's name is Donna and she would like it to be known that she is the ultimate Donna and not in a episodic manner neither.Strange woman.....Thought the show was hunky dory.

Who?

For a minute there I thought the thread was about this 'Who'

Big grin here

Matt smith played it perfectly. The right blend of enthusiasm w\o going into some opf Tennants OTT gurning, the mystery and serious moments given the right weight

New music - hmm, was v X Files echoey but might grow on me. Murray FGold jmusic not as annoying as before. Loved the moment when all the old Docs flashed up on a screen with Smith walking through Tennant's mug - 'Hello, I'm The Doctor'. Bit cheesy but lovely stamp of authority.

as for the future - Daleks, Churchill (for kids who think thats just an insurance flogging dog) cybermen, Alex Kingston. thats my Staurdays sorted for next three months

I wanted to love it...

...but I just couldn't warm to Matt Smith. Oh well, there's plenty of time, I'm sure he'll grow on me.

Also slightly disappointed with plot given that it was a Moffat-written episode and he's delivered (IMHO) the best Who episodes so far.

Loved Karen Gillan tho'. Shaping up to be the best assistant in donkeys'.

Stephen Moffat

lives three doors up from me. No really, he does. It's a tiny house by the way.

( On the outside anyway ).

Theme tune?

There are a few contenders on this website http://whomix.windbubbles.net/?wmid=music

The Whorythmics for starters...
http://whomix.windbubbles.net/?wmid=remixdetails&remixid=214

The Blitzkrieg Bop version...
http://whomix.windbubbles.net/?wmid=remixdetails&remixid=273

Sorry. It HAS to be this version.

What the papers say:

At the in-laws today, read a very favourable review in the Mail.
Mind you it was set in an English village, and the unwanted aliens were repulsed forever!
