The new cover?
Posted by stimpy on 5 July 2010 - 1:49pm.
Guys... what's with the cover of issue 90? Where's the class? Where's the quirky illustration? Where's the style?
Disappointed chaps. You don't look 'special' this month :-(

Two Words.
James Blunt?
Four more words:
.... Isn't on the cover.
Precisely.
Why Not? :)
Cos
'that bloke' from Snow Patrol beat him to it?
If that Gary Lightbody is the Word coverstar
I'm going to weep. I thought there was a 'no indie landfill' rule at Word Towers?
Separated at birth.
Of ik ben een Nederlandse man's oom.
Excellent!
It's Golden Earring! Or Pussycat.
Rockin Robben?
Don Van Persie? Dee Sneijder? Kuyt and the Gang?
Van der Vaart Generator?
Wot
no crayons?
Where is it?
I'm still seeing the summer issue....
One of the many benefits of subscribing...
You know it makes sense. (advert over)
Not
If you live outside the UK
Ah
there it is
Oh dear
My re-subscription through Tesco Clubcard should have kicked in now but... no sign 8-{
Was it something I said?
Tescos
I'm not sure how those subscriptions are fulfilled. I'll find out and get back to you.
Agreed.
I'm with stimpy this month.
What happened? Did the art department all take an early summer break? Were they all comatose in front of their TVs watching the Golden Boys make idiots of themselves? Well, now that the Editor has uttered the immortal words, "England made the last 16" in print: CLANG! - it's all YOUR fault Ellen; can they all go back to their drawing boards and get the crayons out again please?
The Word art department, photographed 10 minutes ago...
And again
This months cover is the worst for a while - nowt special.
A question..
What's with Steve Strange on the bottom right? On the feature inside it's The Smiths.
Assuming it is Steve Strange, of course..
There was so much whinging about last months
***SPOILER ALERT***
that I'm hardly surprised there's no illustrated cover this month.
I was initially disappointed on first glance, I thought of Q Magazine in the mid 00s and those interminable "Top 50 Best Radiohead Tracks" covers.
I then looked again and spotted the 'Fade to Grey' hitmaker in the bottom right hand corner...and among the obvious icons there were some faces I didn't have a clue who they were but presumably enormously famous to some. And there in the top right hand corner...see? I get it. Like last months will probably look better with the straplines and the cd glued to it. But 3rd face down from the left though...do they ever learn?
Again, absolutely packed full of stuff I can't wait to read...and I'm particularly pleased with the excellent review on page 106 by some hip young gunslinger by the name of Dr Volume. Clear me a desk at Pentonville Road! when do I start? What are the hours? Hurrah!
I think it's great
I like covers like that.
And I got my Love review in the magazine too, so I'm not complaining.
Well, illustration naysayers....
...I hope you're happy. The most uninspired cover I've seen on an issue of Word so far. Not that I blame the editorial team: people have had such a pop at the lovely illustrated covers over the last few months that it's no wonder they've gone for the "Select circa 1997" look.
No pleasing some people. ;-)
I'm happy...
Iggy butt naked squatting on top of keith richards would have been preferable to last months cover.
Hell, even Dido was better.
Disliking the illustrated cover
doesn't imply a great love for the current cover, though I agree with Doug B that it's an improvement over Lily and Bruce in a car.
I would have liked a portrait of Tony Benn. That would have been 'different' and 'special'.
An Andre Carillho portrait of Mr Benn
would have been a good cover
Maybe all those little photos
could actually have been little illustrations? Ah well. I really can't imagine that thread here influenced the choice, least I hope it didn't as I liked Lily Springsteen cover and any sarky comments made were just for fun. :(
It's a banker
my guess is you just have to do one of these a year. Just put a broad range of familiar faces on the news stands as everyone sets off on their holidays. It'll sell a bucketful, and you can't begrudge the chaps that.
We'll be back to the Athena posters next issue, trust me.
Hand me my trumpet
PWAAAAAAAAARRRPPP!!!!
Cor, that felt good. I should get a job in publishing.
Actually I missed the obvious point that last month's catch-all cover was intended to entice the punters at the big Latitude subs push. They'll all be wondering this week why they've paid up front for a year's supply of a magazine that puts Frank Spencer's granddad on the cover.
Maybe it's like elections; once they're voted in, governments get the pain out of the way in the first few months, then sweeten you up just before the next renewal.
Prediction: Cartoon Florence on the cover of June 2011, betcha
Wimbledon is over
If you are going to use a picture of a tennis player scratching her bum-cheek, (& I, for one, wouldn't disapprove) you should have put it on the cover last month.
