The new Bond theme is by...

Five-Centres's picture

Well, you decide.

Having watched that Imagine programme the other day about Shirley Bassey recording her new album, it's clear no one does Bond like she does. She'd be great. Richard Hawley could make a decent fist of it too.

But who else singing today could cut it like the Dame? Then again perhaps they should take an entirely new direction, though that Madonna one was execrable.

While we're at it, what's your favourite Bond theme - and your least favourite?

0

Last Shadow Puppets...

... would be great.

My favourite theme is easy peasy: Nobody Does It Better. The worst is a dead heat between every single one since The Living Daylights. That Jack White and Alicia Keys thing was fucking dreadful.

Same singer different song

That's a coincidence, I immediately thought of The Arctic Monkeys.
My other thought was possibly Jenny Lewis.

The Oldies Are The Best;

You Only Live Twice, Thunderball, Diamonds Are Forever, Goldfinger, Nobody Does It Better.

Live And Let Die

is my absolute favourite. Although the version of it Saturday night on that programme was pants.

(My wife reckons McCartney looks like a bad plastic surgery case, like somebody recovering from having their face burnt off.)

But anyway, I always thought Orbital would have done a good job, perhaps backing Shirl.

But currently, well there's not really much choice is there?

Perhaps if they took Bond down a more surreal path then a soundtrack by Kate Bush would work.

SimonL | 14 December 2009 - 12:34pm

Wouldn't Kate be great?

It could work, too. I'd love to hear that.

Scott Walker would be a gem too.

0
Five-Centres | 14 December 2009 - 12:42pm

Kate

You can hear it in your head already can't you?

0
SimonL | 14 December 2009 - 12:45pm

Moonraker

She was asked to do Moonraker, you know, in early 1979, but declined.

0
Graeme Thomson | 14 December 2009 - 12:49pm

Carly Simon

is the best followed by Live and Let Die and Goldfinger

They're both killer tunes!

1
Cadabra | 15 December 2009 - 4:28pm

I know they do big bags of solace

but I don't want 'em.

Brilliant!

None better than "Nobody Does It Better"

Just a great song, arguably the least histrionic of the Bond themes, too. "Goldfinger" and "Diamonds Are Forever" are both great old-school examples, and I'll prepare for an avalanche of derision when I say I actually rate Duran's "A View To A Kill", too...

BEST UNUSED THEME - Shirley Bassey's "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", written for "Thunderball", rejected by Cubby Broccoli as he didn't like the lyrics (hear it here - http://open.spotify.com/track/7uYZJ6actSUcazhKjjyZsK)

BEST IMAGINARY THEME - White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army". Go on, imagine a generic Bond movie opening, a big car chase, a bruising fist fight, and something huge blowing up in slow motion... smash-cut to black, and that riff starts up... how great would that be?

0
Metal Mickey | 14 December 2009 - 12:44pm

It's got to be..............

Lady Gaga!

0
Dave Amitri | 14 December 2009 - 12:54pm

in defence of Jack

I am probably one of the few people on the planet who actually enjoys the Jack White / Alicia Keys song. Was far better than people seem to think. It has groove. It has strings. It has a massive shiny riff. What more could you want from Bond?

I like the idea of the Last Shadow Puppets doing the next one, thanks for that idiotbear.

But I really think that now is the time for Bjork to take over. Imagine the controversy of someone not British or American doing the theme tune! Shocking!

Plus, she has form, as "Bachelorette" is clearly the Bond theme that never was.

Listen to that. Now imagine with the usual Bond opening graphics. makes sense doesn't it?

2
badger_king | 14 December 2009 - 1:13pm

Yep: thumbs up for Jack White

Good theme I thought, if a bit overproduced.

0
Stephen Merrick | 16 December 2009 - 9:12pm

It's gotta be Portishead!

All Mine is already the best Bond theme that never was.

But whatever it is, it's going to have to go some to beat Nobody Does it Better.

0
theblindstagger | 14 December 2009 - 1:30pm

It's the scariest song of all time

The video's like a nightmare. But the production is spot-on Bond, as is the Shadow Puppets

0
Five-Centres | 14 December 2009 - 1:43pm

Bjork! Good call.

Surely Play Dead got David Arnold the Bond gig? Bjork must be well overdue a turn by now...

0
ganglesprocket | 14 December 2009 - 1:32pm

Gotta be...

Fuck Buttons.

1
Patrick Crowther | 14 December 2009 - 2:03pm

Hehehe...

Thanks for keeping the dream alive, Patrick...

Got To Be Goldfrapp

Felt Mountain is almost John Barry anyway..

Best - It's too tough to call. Anything pre-Moonraker is magnificent

Worst - All Time High, Die Another Day, The Living Daylights

1
Mondo | 14 December 2009 - 2:05pm

Agree with Goldfrapp - but...

Time Out From The World must be the Great Lost Bond Theme:

0
Black Type | 14 December 2009 - 3:44pm

It's not my favourite but..

I always thought that Garbage ought to do a Bond theme and although what they came out with (in collaboration with David Arnold) wasn't exactly what I'd expected, I still thought it was still quite good.

0
Dr Yang | 14 December 2009 - 2:24pm

The Muppets...

... and Queen?

0
Adman | 14 December 2009 - 3:31pm

John Shuttleworth

He's a shoe-in.

I'm sure he's available.

0
Beezer | 14 December 2009 - 3:35pm

Billy Mackenzie

is probably my fantasy Bond soundtrack.

This one for instance that came out after he left us.

1
SimonL | 14 December 2009 - 3:50pm

good song

Not heard it before. It sounds EXACTLY like all the recent Bond tunes from Goldeneye on (well, musically anyway...)

OHMSS

David Arnold & Propellorheads. 9 minute version excellent on the old walkman when skiing...

I'd like to see someone Bowie have a go...

The Divine Comedy

He's got the voice and the orchestra for it, though whether he'd be able to summon the requisite raunch is debatable.

Florence of "..and the Machine" might be a good outside bet. Perhaps with a slight alteration of her band... "Florence Against The Machine", anyone?

0
Cadabra | 14 December 2009 - 6:03pm

If you drop the contentious

lyrics and samples, and added a ballsy soul singer on top, this would make the ideal Bond theme tune.

Easily the worst by a country mile

would have to be Duran Duran's "View To A Kill" theme, but there's intense competition for second place. As ever, the crapicity is completely contradicted by the actual popularity shown by the music buying public.

0
Harold Holt | 15 December 2009 - 5:55am

I must disagree

It's a corker. I think the Gladys Knight License to Kill is my least favourite. It's so unmemorable.

0
Five-Centres | 15 December 2009 - 9:48am

And thrice for A View To A Kill

It's got to be the best theme. Maybe it's a generational thing (it's the first one I saw in the cinema) but it's the most "Bond" sounding of all the Bond tunes I think. It's all to do with those shifting not-quite-major not-quite-minor chords.

I'd like to see Radiohead try a Bond theme. I'm not particularly a massive fan, but just think it would be... interesting.

0
Stephen Merrick | 15 December 2009 - 6:28am

How about James Grant?

Saw him in Edinburgh last week, he was on magnificent form. He played a song that he claimed he had offered to Dame SB for her new album, but she had rejected it. He went on to call DSB a 'cow' and vowed never to send her another of his songs again. Anyway, the song, the name of which I didn't catch, had classic Bond theme written all over it - he should be signed up immediately.

His 'Strange Flowers', by the way, is one of the best albums of the year.

MichaelP | 15 December 2009 - 11:05am

With the new 'gritty' Bond (as reference by the mighty

Joe Cornish, above...) I would have thought it was time to draw a line under the balladeers entirely. Electronica would be the way forward for my money. I'd like to hear a Depeche Mode Bond theme.
I don't have any that I hate, but this is my, top of the head fave, cheese all the way...

I was seven years old, RM was 'my Bond' - just great fun!

0
Adman | 15 December 2009 - 11:12am

Perfect song for the next Bond movie

would be Eels 'It's a motherfucker'

0
Steve Turner | 16 December 2009 - 9:29pm

Portishead

I've just been listening to them in one big chunk on the iPod, including the Rustin Man album and I have to say there are several tracks that would make cracking bond themes. Perfect.

0
SimonL | 17 December 2009 - 12:33am

Next Bond theme announced

by YouTube apparently. Should get a good review by Andrew Collins anyway.
