The Neets are drawing in.

It's that time of year again - has it ever been expressed in a more wonderfully moving manner than by Alan Hull?

Elvis Costello once said its the best song he's ever heard - he probably says that quite a lot, but I wouldn't argue with him on this occasion.

Lindisfarned

I made a radio doco about the 'farne a couple of years ago, and not really knowing their back catalogue apart from the singles, did some investigating. I was really surprised at the quality of Alan Hulls song writing. Mind you, they were one hell of an ugly band, the Bash Street Kids made flesh.

This was their finest moment.

The first two Lindisfarne albums, and Alan Hull's first solo album, are up there with the all time greats. Just fantastic to hear this again, thanks for the reminder.

"Pipedream"

Yes, indeed. "Pipedream" is simply a wonderful album. I've always found it very moving. The way Alan's voice cracks on "I Hate to See You Cry"...

Squire

The other 'essential' Hull album.

And the greatest "end of the night" song?

ALAN HULL RIP

A very sad loss, I'd say. It's a shame that he isn't more widely recognised

Dar

I always have to play End Of The Summer by Dar Williams at this time of year. So lovely, so sad.
