The "Manchester Mingle"? The "Liverpool Liason"?

Grant's picture

In the podcast, Heppers mentions the possibility of a gathering of the Northern Chapter...
Who's interested?
Where should it happen?
When should it happpen?
Who wants to organise it?
Living in Warrington I know a little bit about both cities, but not enough to claim to know the best drinking spots. Will gladly help out though...

Beat me to it

Happy to work on a Manchester Mingle. Suggested pubs before were Briton's Protection or The Peveril Of The Peak. They do have intimate rooms. The BP has an open fire & the best selection of whiskies in the city.

Who's interested? Names below. Manc or The 'Pool? Preference for day of week. February, March or later. Then we can get back to Mr H with a set of dates for him to check his diary.

The original London Beer Fest was on a Friday after work. A Friday before a United saturday game at home could be busy. Logic says that is the best day in the week if any quantity of good ale is to be quaffed. I can equally make Liverpool and happy to get involved in that is chosen.

Beany | 6 February 2010 - 7:50pm

Okay, that's two of us..

Shall we push for Manchester then?

0
Grant | 6 February 2010 - 7:55pm

Yo! Grant

We're in the same hood, bro!
Where are you? [don't worry, I won't hunt you down - I'm in Great Sankey]

0
ChaosandMorphine | 8 February 2010 - 7:23pm

Whassup Dawg!

I'm keeping it real in Bewsey and Whitecross. You know, near the hospital.

0
Grant | 8 February 2010 - 9:31pm

Certainly I Do

stout fellow!
I have a friend who lives by the Mazda garage and tomorrow [or tonight, even] I'll be heading over to pick him up on the way to Manchester to see the Low Anthem.
Look out your window at about 7.15 and I'll wave as I go past.
:-)

0
ChaosandMorphine | 9 February 2010 - 1:12am

My local is the Brooklands

and I may be in there tonight sinking a pint..will give you a wave. Hope the gig's a good one.

0
Grant | 9 February 2010 - 3:28am

There's 3 of us!

Only 'down the road' from both of you gents - live in Sankey, Chapel House is my local. Have only contributed a couple of times but my blog viewing is a nightly event (is it wrong to *just* view? Not sure about the politics of that one - feel like a voyeur sometimes!)
More than happy to join the BP Bevvy so will keep an eye on this thread to make sure of times etc.

0
Larry Bee | 9 February 2010 - 1:23pm

I'm a Chapelhouser too!

I live nearer the Woodies but it's full of 'young' people so I walk the extra 50 yards to The Chapelhouse.
This is freaking me out now, every time I leave the house my head's on a swivel looking for 'Word' types!
:-)

0
ChaosandMorphine | 9 February 2010 - 5:47pm

Chapel House !!

You probably wouldn't identify me as a 'Word Type', no beard and the Dylan/Richard Thompson connection doesn't really fit either, just love my music and 99% of the content on the blog.
I'm afraid my connection to the Chapel is pretty well worn, mum & dad still live behind it (I live behind the Trigger Pond next to the farm at the back of the estate but as a pub it's crap) and I've used the Chapel (Bar side) since I was 17. Pretty frequent user (too frequent in FPO opinion but there we are).
Pop your head around the bar side next time you're in and give me a shout, If I'm not in I'm sure somebody who knows me will be!!

0
Larry Bee | 9 February 2010 - 11:55pm

Fellow Warringtonians..

I'm out of action until Sunday, but perhaps we could arrange an initial tentative pint at some point prior to the 5th?

0
Grant | 10 February 2010 - 3:10am

woodies

i used to bartend in the woodies years ago before college

more of a family pub back then with lots of cougars on the hunt!

0
junkiecosmonaut | 10 February 2010 - 6:29pm

It's coming home, it's coming home

Ligging's coming home...

Pssst. Sat. 6th March Trafford United are away at Wolves. Friday the 5th? No pressure. 6th is my birthday (hint).

0
Beany | 6 February 2010 - 8:03pm

Date's good for me..

now we just have to wait for others to join us (drums fingers on table absent-mindedly)...

0
Grant | 6 February 2010 - 8:15pm

Count me in!

Fri 5th March is good for me and Manchester being the closest of the two, would be my preferred City, can even pull in a trip to Fopp as well

0
Mint | 6 February 2010 - 10:04pm

Huzzah!

Do I hear any advance on 3?

0
Grant | 6 February 2010 - 10:32pm

Early o'clock's good

if it's Manchester (6-ish ideal, as coming from work). 5th's fine for me.

0
millymollymandy | 7 February 2010 - 10:14am

Room for one more?

I'll try to be there as well. The 5th sounds good, as does The Briton's Protection.

0
Andrew Rowan | 7 February 2010 - 11:23am

The Glaswegian Punch Up

1
James Blast | 7 February 2010 - 12:26am

5 so far

I've twittered The Hep and am awaiting a response from "his people". Wonder if we need separate room for subscribers?

0
Beany | 7 February 2010 - 11:45am

Could bring a few

There are some Word types in our office - could probably round up 5 of us for a few swift ones. Great idea. Hep and Ellen need to be there, come on, meet your public...

0
Michael Taylor | 7 February 2010 - 12:41pm

More the merrier

The Hep mentioned on the podcast he would come up to it, in response to my tweet to him.

Should I be worried I might be a "Word type"?

0
Beany | 7 February 2010 - 12:51pm

5..c'mon people!

There must be more..may even stay over so that I can go the distance and don't have to endure the unspeakable horror of the last train home..
also want to keep this thread alive for people who haven't tuned in for a bit so if they log on they can see it's a going concern!

0
Grant | 7 February 2010 - 4:09pm

I'll try to be there.

Once you've sorted a date and location I'll check the diary.

0
Red Umpire | 7 February 2010 - 10:02pm

OK, the Briton's Protection it shall be

or am I making an executive decision? Anyone else want to chip in? Do we need to book a room, or do we all just turn up?

0
Grant | 7 February 2010 - 11:46pm

Grant, Britons Protection

sounds good, presuming it is in the centre somewhere. Been a while since I had a night out in Manchester. A room would be good, but I guess it'll depend on how many will be attending?

0
Mint | 8 February 2010 - 12:36pm

Tentatively accept....

BP, like most decent Manc pubs will be hammered on a Friday night but they do have a top floor room for hire.
It is a bit of an 'ask' to expect Word staff to come all the way up from London though. Perhaps a video link up?.

0
Dr Volume | 8 February 2010 - 2:12am

I'll try and make it

for 5th March

What time?

0
Ahh_Bisto | 8 February 2010 - 10:04am

I've got to be in Alty on the 6th...

...for a 40th birthday, could come up a day early...hmmm

0
Richie B | 8 February 2010 - 10:34am

How Exciting!

I'm in. But I reserve the right to clandestinely walk past the gathering first in a superficial attempt to gauge the attendees & whether I will assimilate before scurrying off in a childish, wussy & immature fashion.

Joking.

The BP sounds good. That'll take me back...

0
TheJunkyardDemon | 8 February 2010 - 10:58am

So we're talking 10 people now?

That's a step in the right direction. Shall it be tentatively convened at 7? I, for one, will be travelling into Manchester from Warrington, so the earliest could be 6, but it all depends on what you all want, appreciating that some might want a drink after work and not want a later start.
I'm right in thinking that the pub's near the Bridgewater Hall, yes?

0
Grant | 8 February 2010 - 7:21pm

Co-inky-dink

This
http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/2010/feb/07/elbow-guy-garvey-jesca-hoo...
An interview with Jesca Hoop & Guy Garvey in the Briton's Protection. Spooky?

0
ChaosandMorphine | 8 February 2010 - 7:27pm

Briton's Protection

Bridgewater Hall just across the road. Keep going, there is a Premier Inn (or whatever they are called now). If it's posh you are after the BP is virtually next door to a Jurys Inn. Or the Midland, where Mr Rolls met Mr Royce. Or The Radisson, where Mr Cowell stays when the X Factor auditions are in town.

Are you getting this Mr. Hepworth?

0
Beany | 8 February 2010 - 8:54pm

Oh I see.......

...I only listened to the Pod today on the way to work so I know realise that Mr Hepworth had actually thrown down the gauntlet and offered to ride the Richard Branson Express to Piccadilly should a sufficient Northern Chapter of the massive be convened. Perhaps we should await to see whether he has a 'Window' before hotels get booked etc?
I realise The 5th now isn't ideal for me at all but I may have to flit between two separate events like Mrs Doubtfire...
How many were at the London shindig? We really oughta get as many?

0
Dr Volume | 9 February 2010 - 1:52am

We ought,

but being a scattered tribe, it might take a bit of time, and, as you know, fortune favours the brave, so let's fix that date and go for it. If we fix it...He(ppers) will come...

0
Grant | 9 February 2010 - 3:25am

I think you're right Grant...

... maybe we should just bite the bullet, say the 5th in the Briton's Protection and see what happens.

After all, surely this is only the start of a regular occurrence - we need to catch-up with the London contingent.

0
Andrew Rowan | 9 February 2010 - 11:06am

Okay then..

Shall we say 7p.m. in the Britons Protection. March 5th. Further details shall be forthcoming closer to the date (i.e. How we shall make ourselves known etc.etc)
How do the chaps feel about that? If you'd like to email me and confirm, or give a heads up about any further developments?

0
Grant | 9 February 2010 - 6:57pm

Yes, yes and yes.

Although I may take advantage of the city's hospitality during the day. Fopp, Vinyl Exchange, Chinatown, er, Disney Store, etc.

We will be Mancunians for the evening. Everybody in the pub will just bloody know we are part of Worldwide Word Massive.

0
Beany | 9 February 2010 - 7:54pm

at the other end of the M62....

I'm based in Liverpool so may well come over for a meet (Britons Protection is an excellent choice)but are there any Liverpool readers who fancy a pint a bit closer to home?

0
Jamie_Bowman | 10 February 2010 - 12:32am

We can alternate cities, if this first one's a success?

As I've stated, I'm between both cities, so don't mind where we start, but it would be nice to hope that (appreciating the distance travelled by all partied concerned) we can turn this into a bit of a "movable feast" thus eliminating any (supposed) bias for location?
Would happily attend Liverpool meet-up also.

0
Grant | 10 February 2010 - 3:06am

Plus one

Just listened to the Podcast yesterday and hoped someone might have organised something on the forums - good work chaps!
I should be able to get there on the 5th.
Maybe we could all carry a rolled up copy of the Dido issue?

0
vinnell | 10 February 2010 - 7:07am

I'd be interested

I'd prefer Manchester if poss.

0
Handsome.P.Wonderful | 10 February 2010 - 5:15pm

I was in the Briton's Protection on Saturday..

..and Elbow were in. Well, most of them. Bodes well I think...

0
Prestonia | 10 February 2010 - 7:37pm

Another Liverpool Reader Here

Manchester probably wouldn't be doable for me on that date, but if there's the likelihood of some kind of Liverpool gathering, I could certainly try and make that.

0
Andrew F | 10 February 2010 - 8:05pm

Attention, Manchester Massive

This is a public service announcement: Mark Ellen plans to be in the bar at Mal Maison this evening at 10.30pm, and would be delighted if any local Word readers joined him for a quick shandy. Or two.

0
Fraser Lewry | 18 February 2010 - 3:28pm

Shoot

It's 10.47pm and I've just read the message. Hope he's not sat there all alone, nonchalantly waving a copy of the latest Word around. Someone tell hin to stay up t'north and go and see Stackridge in Bury tomorrow. I will be drinking proper beer in the Two Tubs from 7.30pm with fellow Rhubarb Thrashers.

Anyone any idea on numbers for the Manchester Mingle? I hope to get to the BP before the 5th March to warn the landlord of the imminent influx of RT-lookalikes and Kate Bush clones.

0
Beany | 18 February 2010 - 10:54pm

No idea - 10 at least?

But let us know if you do get to warn the landlord?

0
Grant | 22 February 2010 - 9:53pm

Gah, the Tubs is a terrible

Gah, the Tubs is a terrible place. Get yourself down to the Help Me Thro', a wonderful pub.

I should be working on the night of the 5th but have booked it off to attend a Bury Football Club 'Legends' night. This, however, seems infinitely preferable given the calibre of the 'Legends' that have signed up to attend so far.

0
JamesB | 22 February 2010 - 10:20pm

Me too..

I've been working in Manchester today too.

0
Prestonia | 18 February 2010 - 10:57pm

Massive

I`m in Blackburn and will deffo try to meet the Manchester/Liverpool/Lancashire etc Massive.

I`ll be the one looking like a fat startled bunny.

0
Simon Smith | 22 February 2010 - 9:50am

Okay, I'm sorted for the evening

so I'm definitely going to be there...beers ahoy!

0
Grant | 22 February 2010 - 9:44pm

Unusual Names!

We were in Manchester recently for The Transatlantic Sessions at The Bridgewater Hall. We went into Briton's Protection and saw The Peverill of the Peak. BP was a fine pub and The Peverill looked very interesting. Any idea where the names originate from?
Also went into both The Chop Houses in the centre. Really recommend the Posh Cheese Toast and Corned Beef Hash.

0
Pinmonkey | 22 February 2010 - 10:31pm

It's a buke

Peveril of the Peak (1823) is the longest novel by Sir Walter Scott. Along with Ivanhoe, this is one of Scott's English novels, with the main action taking place around 1678.

0
Beany | 22 February 2010 - 10:36pm

William Peveril

William Peveril built the castle in Castleton, Derbyshire. The castle has always been called Peveril Castle. It is in the Peak District. Hence, Peveril of the Peak.

0
Red Umpire | 25 February 2010 - 11:11pm

Mr Thomas's Chop House on Cross St

is a superb boozer. I must sample that cheese on toast..

0
Prestonia | 22 February 2010 - 10:36pm

The Circus Tavern

was recently featured on TV as the current owner is retiring. Sounds ideal for a Mingle in the future...

This is officially the smallest pub in Manchester, having only two tiny, simply furnished rooms. It can accommodate just 2 Tetley Bitter handpumps and approximately 35 drinkers at any given time. There is no room for food, darts board, juke box or pool table either.

Although a friendly, welcoming place, if you find the doors closed at weekends, it's because they simply cannot risk having too many people in. For this reason, it becomes almost the equivalent of a private members' club for its mainly male regulars.

0
Beany | 22 February 2010 - 10:43pm

Er, is this still on?

Or have we abandoned all hope?
Just thought I could do with some clarification.
