The Manchester Massive March Mingle
Posted by Grant on 27 February 2010 - 10:17pm.
This may be a little bit early, but I thought that if I posted now, then people would have enough notice to make plans rather than leave it until Tuesday / Wednesday.
Date - Friday 5th March
City - Manchester
Place - Britons Protection Pub
Time -7pm onwards
Come one, come all from the North-West. Hopefully, this will be the first of many.
Initial numbers suggested about 10 or so? Is that still the case?
Hope to meet many of you there...my wardrobe choices have yet to be made for the evening, but I will brandish a copy of The Word to make myself recognisable.
Be seeing you?

a wee bit outta ma way
but I wish the lotta ye a richt guid nicht - the Glassgow meet up is looking for volunteers : Friday 12 March, Mono, Glassgow
And, Sir
I wish the same to our Scottish chapter!
Many takers for the Glasgow meeting, JB?
I'll be around that night, so might try to drop by for a couple. Does Mono still brew its own beer?
There are quite a few
http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/glasgow-gathering has the banter - starting around 6.
We've got 8 probables and some possibles - if you want to drop me a message I'll make sure you know the designated password !
It's on't calendar
Hope to be there before 7pm. In town on Thursday so hope to warn, er, advise landlord of influx of intelligent, warm-hearted, RT types descending on his hostelry on Friday.
Let's hope they are gone by the time we get there... Pin your names to the mast.
Thanks,
in advance, for doing that.
Oh the irony..
..I'm stuck working in that there London on Friday - as I'm based in Lancaster it means I won't make it as I'll be heading home on the train. Have one for me chaps, I'll definitely make the next one.
Thanks for the heads up
We look forward to seeing you next time, have a safe journey back up to God's Country!
Apologies
I can't make it for that date but maybe at a subsequent event?
Thanks
for letting us know David, at least you'll be spared, on this occasion, the hordes of bearded, pen-wielding middle-aged men asking for autographs and Whistle Test recollections (led by me). Hope to see you (and anybody else from Word Towers) at a later date.
I wish I could fly ,but I can't.
I wish with all my heart I could make the social, but I've deadlines to meet, got a client in Canada waiting for a canvas and It's already late.Maybe next time.Have a good un!There in spirit and all that.
Thanks.
Hope to meet you at one soon!
a canvas?
do you paint? anything viewable online anywhere?
P'raps
He makes tents?
Only
in the morning with the right amount of female stimulation.
P'raps
he owns a canvas factory?
More of a cottage industry.
I'm not that prolific.Just waiting for a glaze to go orf then I'll be back at the daubing.
Not at the moment
I'm a late adopter of these computery gizmos. It is the plan to put some daubings up for perusal in the not to distant.I'm hoping to make a start by getting an Irish mate who has a gallery in the North-West,to put some up on his site till I get the hang of this properly.
Unless I lose my nerve at the last minute
I'll be there, though will be nipping off early to avoid late night trains.
Feeling nervous already...
Fear not!
It's bound to be a bit tentative to start with, but the lubrication of social interaction with alcohol will surely pay dividends!
Checking back on the previous post
The following folks all expressed an interest in attending besides myself, Beany and Millymollymandy. Is that still the case? This is just to get some notion of numbers and the grabbing of chairs / tables in the Protection-assuming they've got many chairs to grab, I've never been in there!

The BP
please accept my apologies - at approximately 8.00am tomorrow morning I will be driving to Broadgreen Hospital for a wonderful procedure called 'Heart Ablations', all happened pretty quickly. Even with my world renowed powers of recovery (and thirst)I think Friday might be pushing it somewhat.
Have a good one.
Don't bother with suggestions to be listened to on Ipod whilst procedure takes place, would be gobsmacked if any not previously suggested came up.
Take Care
and good luck - see you at the next one.
Oh,oh
there appears to have been some crossing of wires at some point. I'm indisposed on Friday so didn't express my intention to be there. Sorry if I gave the opposite impression.
Good luck to all who make it!
Surely the next step after this would be to organise a World Wide Word meet -up, where at the same time on the same day, as many Wordsters as possible meet in regional hostelries with all the meetings being linked via Skype or some other such devilry?
Apologies.
Didn't mean to presume. Just based the list on people who'd expressed an interest in the previous thread. Didn't mean to alarm. See you at the next one.
I can't make it
but will definitely do the next one. They have an upstairs room at the BP - worth knowing given that it's likely to be rammed on a Friday night.
Thanks for letting us know
Hope to see you at the next one!
My attendance is doubtful
My dad is in hospital at the moment. So I'm going to have to leave it until the last minute to let you know whether I can make it.
Thanks Handsome
Hope your dad's going to be okay, it'll be good to see you if you can make it. There will be other meetings (we hope!).
4 Tops
No reaching out required, I'll be there.
I may well be plus one or 2. A work colleage is an avid reader of the magazine and he might bring a family member who works on the mag.
Looking forward and thanks for getting this together Grant.
Hold on...
... I'm coming. My wife has even offered to give me a lift (not sure if that's good or bad...).
And - like Vinnell just said - thanks for organising Grant.
No thanks necessary, but thank you, both
just be there and we can all have a damn good chinwag!
Grant
Unfortunately I can't make it, I have work commitments early doors on Sat, which I can't get out of, as much as i've tried. Living in Nth Derbyshire means its just a trip to far. I feel like a right s**t not going, and apologise as you've organised it with such spirit. I'm sure you'll all have a great night, and wish you all well.
Merci Minty!
We appreciate the dedication. Fret not, as there will be other opportunities and I, for one, look forward to shaking your hand in person. Hope work thing goes well.
I'm still
hoping to be there, though it's likely to be nearer 9pm. I'll confirm over the next couple of days if I can sort out the shuttle runs to kids' parties, to the railway station and to infinity and beyond.
And we're still
hoping that you'll be there. We won't move, so hopefully, we'll see you later!
Er...
I'm sure we will have to move to some extent during the evening, if only to retire to the beer garden to re-create the Battle of Watercloset from ye olde Punk Wars.
It has a beer garden?
I only meant inasmuch as abandoning our initial location for another watering hole....on Friday night we leave no man behind. as for actual movement, once I break the seal I'm up and down like Elton John's moods.
Does the Protection quieten down as the evening progresses, or can we expect it to be rammed all night?
Sorry!
Double post!

Beer Patio...
...rather than garden. Round the back, handily near the door for the toilets. Know where you're coming from, if not aiming at...
Oh, and I'll be there.
And no, I shan't be singing the rest of that. If you want me to comfort, love or cherish you...it'll cost you at least a pint.
And my real name is ...
Gavin
I thought it might be useful information. Shouting "Vinnell?" across a crowded bar might raise a few brows.
Looking forward to Friday's beer and banter. I hope to be there between 7 and 8. It looks like my plus 2 will be coming, barring any last minute hiccups - I guess we'll be somewhere in the region of 10 in total.
So the current list is...
Myself,
Beany,
Vinnell (Gavin!) +2

Millymollymandy
Looking forward to seeing you all.
Anyone else more than welcome...
Maybe Mingling
As suspected, I will be in town but am due to have drinks with some (non-Word reading) friends I haven't seen for a while. However, depending on how long we're out for I'll try and pop into the BP and commune with the Mingle. If not, I hope y'all have top night.
Top marks to Grant for sorting this and maybe a regular Mingle will grow from this.
Late addition to the bill
Word contributor John Naughton is visiting Cottonopolis on the day in question and has promised to turn up. Treat him gently. And don't let him drink. It has terrible consequences.
Re: John Naughton
Message received and understood.
Is there a special number we should ring in case he gets out of hand?
I was hoping to be there
I was hoping to be there but am now otherwise engaged.
Hope it goes well and that another one is arranged.
Damn.
I've heard a rumour that the Mojo Mob and the Q Street Gang will be out and looking for trouble on Friday. Could get ugly. Come armed with quips and witticisms. Bring a false beard.
Quips ain't gonna cut it. It's our turf
and I've thrown down some lino in the kitchen to practice in case we have a dance-off. They will get served, bro.
False beards ? The Massive ?
Are these to wear over our real beards ?
Senor Badjin, hawd yir wheesht!
the 'Word Beards' will not be unleashed until the Glasga meet-up
I have a cunning plan
and his wheesh was held
Can I come out to play please?
Long time lurker, but would love to come and talk rubbish with fellow word acolytes if you'll have me. Always been jealous of the London meets, so very excited about a chance to join the North West contingent
Welcome, welcome, welcome
Looking forward to welcoming a Sista into the crew. As has already been stated, it might get hairy..can you bust-a-move against the Mojo mob?
looking forward to it!
I reckon I can handle it!
Only 24hrs and 45 mins to go
and I'm starting to feel nervous...
calm down dear
I'm sure no probing will be involved
The probing is the one thing
I'm really looking forward to.
like this?
and sorry for crashing yer thread ya Manc Bastards, I have a great love of yer town and its peeps
OK
I'm good to go for tomorrow night. Not sure what time I'll pitch up but it should be before 9pm.
I'll not be drinking so sadly I'll only be able to muster at best 'slightly amusing' anecdotes but on the plus side I'll probably remain only 'slightly acerbic' with my comments.
If I have to bust any moves you'll need more than lino on the floor to clear up the mess.
Looks like I will be driving
So will have to keep it down to 6 pints. Only joking. Hoping to get to the Wigan Beer Festival on Saturday.
Nobody should turn up and wonder if they are in the right place. If in any doubt, stand near the bar and very loudly shout...MASSIVE!! We will surely find you then.
Should be easy to find you all
I assume I just head towards whichever group is entertaining the room with a rousing chorus of "Dora, The Female Explorer"?
I'll be wearing a large furry coat, worthy of Shackleton, and will mostly be answering to the name of "Elizabeth".
See you there, around 7
Manchester
I'm another Manchester resident, I can't make it tomorrow I'm afraid but I'll keep an eye out for future dates.
Thanks for the heads up
Hope to see you at the next one.
May mingle
Hi Manchester Massive members,
we said last time that we'd try and go for a May meet up. Grant, are you happy to arrange things again?
I'm away for a week or so without internet access so I thought I'd make an early claim for any Friday night except the 7th.
Thanks
7th it is then!
Nooo. You have to benefit from my knowledge of all thing Stackridgean...
The footie will have finished, Don McLean at the Bridgewater on 14th - means we may struggle for tables until they toddle of to see the APH.
