The Luminaire Kilburn: Is this run by a member of The Word Massive?
Posted by Retro Man on 15 January 2009 - 3:34pm.
I can't post the photo at the moment so I'll put the link, check the photo of their "mission statement" - classic!
(I've added it - David H.)
If there is ever a Word Massive meet-up this must be the place to go.

The signs reads (in case the link doesn't work):
SHUT UP
No-one paid to listen to you talking to your pals.
If you want to talk to your pals when the bands are on,
Please leave the venue.

Thanks Mr H!

What we need
What we need is a WORD business card with the this typed up on it. When the 3 girls next to you start discussing Barry from Despatch, simply hand one of them the card.
I remember from an earlier podcast Mr. H's proposal of the "Twat" card - you could get the printers to do a run of these at the same time to save costs.
I love that so much...
it has restored my faith in humanity. Good for them...
I'm only going to gigs
at the Luminaire in future. Well done to them.
Chris Difford's playing
there on March 27th - surely this is Word reader heaven!
Got my eye on that one.
Will discuss with Mrs R tonight but its looks a good one. Not sure what the parking's like in Kilburn however....
Should be fine
I went there (I really liked the place) and it is on a main road so after 6.30 parking is OK along it.
Hurrah
Mrs R is up for some rocking Difford so 2009's first gig is now in the diary.
Judging by the lyrical content of his new album
I'm not sure he's up for much rockin'.
They're everywhere
These messages are painted every few feet on the walls in the Luminaire. Much as I endorse the sentiment they are a little overbearing. I was there for the first time just before Christmas to see Thea Gilmore. She commented on how quiet the audience were (actually, Thea always comments on how quiet the audience is - she really should be used to us by now). Someone in the crowd pointed out the notices and Nigel Stonier noted that it was reasonable for those present to be quiet when the signs made it sound as if we would be glassed by the staff if we made any noise.
The Luminaire
I'm a regular at this venue and it's a great place to see bands. I've only ever witnessed one punter being asked to leave. He'd been gassing on for ages and eventually a rather large man had a quiet word and he was out of the door faster than you can say ELP.
All done in a very friendly way though. And it's definitely not an intimidating venue.
Has it changed recently?
I went a couple of times a few years back and vowed never to go again. Both times the main acts didn't come on until almost 11 which always annoys me. I also found that unless you are right at the front it's not easy to see much and I'm 6ft. Also because the bar is comparatively close to the stge noise was a problem - but this probably explains the signs.
where can I buy a T shirt?
I'm off to the Luminaire to see Black Box Recorder in a month or two
Hurrah!
Is it too early to nominate it as venue of the year!
Fine venue
I've got my tickets for James McMurtry (Saturday night). He did a session on Bob Harris's programme tonight if you want a taster via Listen Again. Be quick they're going fast.
If the band
can't hold my attention, then as long as I'm not bellowing at the top of my voice I don't see what's wrong with having a quiet chat at the bar.
I went to a gig at the Luminaire last year and I really didn't like the place at all. The comments above which say it's too quiet and that the signs are overbearing are spot on. It's not the ballet for Christ's sake.
Given a choice between The Luminaire and The Borderline I know where I'd rather be - in a hot and sweaty basement, with a nice buzz coming from the direction of the bar.
You've précised the problem
It's not the ballet it's a bar. If people did chat quietly there'd be no problem. However there's a band playing and most people won't chat quietly or whisper into a friend's ear but try to make themselves heard over the music.
March 14th…
I'll be playing at this:

(Everyone's welcome to chat through my bit…)
Here's a thought
As that proposed Word massive Xmas get together never happened is anyone up for a one week early Vernal Equinox meet up (apart from Dave who is presumably contractually obliged to be there)?
Dave I shall try and be there anyway. It sounds like a good night's musical entertainment.
That's…
… very sweet of you to suggest that. Although it could be the night of my greatest public humiliation - I'm cacking myself already, to be frank. But do come and say hello if you make it down.
Shhh
Our sxsc shows at the Railway in Winchester operate the same No Talking policy and have done for years. Our sign is not so rude, though (because I'm a scaredy-cat and don't like to be confrontational). It says:
In common with other UK venues such as the Luminaire in London and the Cellars in Portsmouth, we request QUIET PLEASE during the performances.
The artists (mainly from the US or Canada) unsurprisingly love this and beg to return to play the venue again.
I used to be a teacher so I give an assembly-like warning at the beginning of the show. If anyone does talk, my wife sorts them out with a steely glare.

Do you ask for mobiles to be turned off
as well?
James McMurtry
At his gig at The Luminaire last Saturday he said he didn't care if we talked between songs as he could tune louder than we could speak. Not sure if he got the whole point of the sign.
