The LOST 45s
Posted by Bodhisattva on 19 January 2011 - 6:30pm.
I just posted this on the Phil Collins thread mentioning that this mighty track was never even released as a single, which has made me think. What other album tracks were BEGGING to become stand-alone hit 45s but inexplicably never were unchained from the album?

How about this one...
...by Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes?
And Brinsley Schwarz...
...never got round to releasing this as a single.
Did Nick Lowe...
...release the obvious 45 "Rose Of England" as a single? I think not. Incredible.
They did,
actually:

(No youtube video as, er, it wasn't a single)
Why this wasn't a single I have no idea.
Happy Man by Chic. Just fantastic...
Get well soon Nile Rogers
The Smiths
Even though it was later put out as a single 'posthumously' to promote a compilation, "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" would surely have been their biggest hit if released at the time.
Also, the awesome "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" was meant to be the lead single from "Strangeways Here We Come", but was dropped in the wake of the Hungerford tragedy because of the throwaway line about "mass murder".
Brings me back to the question
I asked before about how you can be sure what was and what was not a single.
I'm extremely confident this wasn't - but here's the vid:
(Madness, Bed And Breakfast Man)
..while I was expecting this standout track from the last Camera Obscura lp to be a single. I'm quite sure it wasn't. But there's a vid for this too:
(Camera Obscura, Honey In The Sun)
Good call STD
Don't tell anyone but I know the 'Bed & breakfast man'!
I *think* I'm right in saying...
... that the reason that "B & B Man" has a video even though it wasn't a single, is because it was lopped out to promote the "Take It Or Leave It" film when it was released.
Blimey!
The guy at the start of the video or the geezer the song is about?
Anyway I love this thread and want to keep it alive so...
This one was thrown away as a b side:
and tossing off a cheesy cover of a dull U2 song seemed like a good idea at the time. Me, I'd have released this:
Not letting this go
This terrific song only needed to be used in some dumb ad and be rush released as a cash in hit. (And it's on The Word CD of September 2005):
While this is the Christmas Number One every year in some parallel universe (Nice images too):
New Order
It always baffled me at the time why this was never a single
There're a couple of tracks on "Brotherhood" too that could've stood on their own.
New Order
Not 100% sure of this, but I don't think New Order ever released album tracks as singles until Technique.
They Weren't Keen
But "Low Life" does have "Perfect Kiss" on it, and the original version of "Sub-Culture" before they rebuilt it for single release.
"Brotherhood" has "Bizarre Love Triangle".
Ephemeral whinging aspect
The best song off his most commercial album ... could've been a big single
