The Kiwi Massive, with a beer glass, in the library
The Word’s commander of coding Fraser Lewry moved among us last night, joining Word Readers Austin, Nick, Steve and Andy for an evening of music and rugby banter.
Steve told of his time working on NZ music magazine Rip It Up. Andy revealed the climactic effects of listening to Basement Jaxx at the Big Day Out. Several Pironis later, Austin’s love for Depeche Mode and Gary Numan was undimmed. We discussed the hazards of swapping trousers with John Bonham; Rob Fitzpatrick’s Rush Pig and how, for children of a certain age, Ron Mael was Hitler.
All of which left little time to discuss the rugby, or if Mike Tindall should invite some dwarves round to meet the family. We did agree, though, that for the purist, the only acceptable RWC final is New Zealand v Wales.
Here’s a photo of our little gathering

Hello chaps! That's lovely. Makes me rather happy that mingles happen worldwide.
It was very enjoyable
Nick was also kind enough to hand out a CD mix of various bootleg recordings, which I am looking forward to immensely.
The banter was like a pinball, pinging from Nick's schooldays in Pinner alongside an already-too-charismatic-for-his-own-good Simon Le Bon and then zinging over to Steve's sincere anger around how confectionery has changed for the worse in the last 10 years.
I was in awe over the detailed knowledge shared among the group about msic, particularly The Who, and amused by the fact that Steve and Andy had spent the first half hour or so with a large group of people reciting poetry at the other end of the pub. They thought it was something organised by The Word. As if.
Fraser, it was a delight to meet you in person. The evening flew by and now I have a sore head because I am such a lightweight these days. Worth it though - and go the All Blacks!

This chap Austin is a tremendous fellow who I have known since I was about 10. I am, literally, jealous of everyone in this picture getting to have a night on the sauce with him.
Thank you, Rob
You are, literally, too kind. And the feeling couldn't be mutualler.
harrumphs ,grabs wallabies scarf
logs off
go Wallabies
I am not actually asleep in that picture
I had a very nice time indeed. Thanks for organising, Austin - great choice of venue - and thanks to Nick for the CD.
My head still hurts.
the choice of photos
was between that one and this one. Hope your head feels better.
Greetings from a little bit further south
Glad it went well. One day the north will meet the south. Until then here's to that final you mentioned.
And to think
that not three months ago I was on a faux steam paddler pootling along old Mother Thames listening to Neil Finn and CW Stoneking with at least two of those in the photo.
The Word: A global phenomenon.
I have the same t-shirt that Fraser is wearing
That is all.
It's popular
So has Andrew Harrison. And "Seventies" Mike Johnson.
You all look
so healthy and glowing.
Not a beard in sight
Imposters!
No Word Birds
either.
Could Kiri not make it?
Nick Lowe
Just heard that Nick's playing Auckland in March. Perhaps that could be a good excuse for a mini-mingle round 2?
I should manage to grow a decent beard by then.
Judging by the books
Looks to be the most Word of venues for a mingle yet.
Beer
Books and Bezzie mates
Few, if any, things in life are better.
what library
lets you grog on and talk about music all night?
other libraries are missing a trick
all you have to do is put the word 'Bar' after 'Library' and you're in business. Genius.
