The Killing - Advice needed. **No spoilers please**

tkdmart's picture

Has anyone watched the original and the American pilot? How does it compare?

I missed it all, and know it is held in high regard in this parish. Should I buy the DVD or go ahead and watch the American version?

Instinct says go with the original, but if ever there was a place to come for advice on such matters, it's here.

Only the Danish one

But I know that the US one has no conclusion, electing to leave the last ep on a cliffhanger, unlike the Danish one which saw it all wrapped up.

I don't think that's a spoiler.

I loved the Danish one, only really because it was set somewhere other than London or Manchester. Being set in Copenhagen somehow made it all the more interesting.

I hear the US one is pretty faithful to the original.

I watched the pilot last night.

It was quite faithful to the original series (even using - almost - the same ratcheted up dramatic music at the end of episodes). The character of Sarah's partner was the biggest difference - this is a whole other guy.
The writing and acting was good but - since you're asking - I wouldn't want to watch this before the Danish version, and if you're only going to watch one, my advice would be to get the dvds.

Not a spolier but there was a curious cross-cultural moment when Dad was explaining to the twins about their grandmother's death and he said "Remember when Nana was at the hospital?". I think this was deliberate but maybe I'm reading too much into it...

Quicker

Apparently the American one is quicker though, 13 episodes instead of 20.

I'm sure it will be good, but having loved the Dannish one I don't know whether to bother.

I can't recommend the original highly enough.

Ain't necessarily so …

The American version ended its first series after 13 episodes, but it ended on a cliffhanger and the mystery is still unsolved. It remains to be seen how many episodes of the second series (due next year) it takes to wrap up the story. So, I would say that the U.S. version is not necessarily quicker.

The original is the best.

Watch the Danish one!!!

I had to stop watching the US one last night, not saying it necessarily bad of itself but the casting, cinematography, tone, script, wardrobe, music (probably more things, but I only lasted 20 minutes) were all so much better in the Danish version.

Sarah Lund

... is now revered in our house. The GLW has taken to eating baked beans straight out of the pan and wearing patterned chunky sweaters.

Have seen both

The US version is worth following though it does sag for a couple of episodes.Personally i would say go Danish,it's fabulous.
Am starting "Borgen" tonight. The new Danish thriller just acquired by BBC 4. Comes highly recommended by my Danish friend Gitte.

Danish !

The problem will be if you watch the US remake before seeing the original - then you ll probably not fully appreciate the utter brilliance of the Danish one if you ever get round to seeing it .
