The Killers' Hat-Trick...

Nicodemus's picture

Having read a previous thread about their latest single, it struck me that little has been written on The WORD blog about my favourite pop band of these modern times, The Killers.

I loved HOT FUSS and the follow-up SAM'S TOWN; and now I'm digging DAY & AGE. All are packed with catchy tunes delivered with just the right amount of swagger; and of course, in pop, the correct amount of swagger is important.

personally...

I think far too much has been written about a 'landfill indie' band from Vegas, already - your mileage may vary, other 'landfill' is available...

Oh Dear...

... first off, I haven't a clue what you just said.

I was just making the point that the stuff they've put out over their first three albums has been very good.

I didn't realise that "far too much has been written about a 'landfill indie' band from Vegas" but can understand if it has (and you've been affected by it), it might thwart your appreciation.

It's

called trolling. Well done on not rising to the bait.

A cut above

I've always considered The Killers a cut above the landfill. Songs like Bones and Read my Mind always pass the "pump up the volume" test when they pitch up on the random play.

They're great...

A proper pop group, not a rock group.

Top band

Always get the toes a-tapping. As far away from Landfill Indie as Girls Aloud.

exactly

a good band. Not landfill indie at all - too much show, swagger and all round talent for that term.

Landfill Indie

I've always thought that the most important pre-requisite for being a Lanfill Indie band is to take yourself hugely seriously.

Hmmm

I'm not keen on the singer's empty bellow of a voice - I think it's a horrible noise.

The music sounds a bit pro-tooled to death to me, just copying and pasting bars of music to other bits. All rock no roll.

Singles

They're bringing out all their singles as 7" picture discs. Can there be a higher recommendation? Actually, I do think they're one of the few great new singles bands of the last few years-they do actually seem to know how to craft hit singles. From Mr. Brightside to Spaceman, It'll be a hell of a greatest hits album...sorry, Spotify playlist.

I gave them...

the 13 year old daughter test. As posted elsewhere on the blog, I consider Spaceman to be one of the greatest ever pop songs of the modern age. I tested it on my daughter - 1st play, not that concerned, 2nd play - loved it, now, three days in it's one of her desert island discs.

I really wasn't trying my hand at trolling

it was in fact a failed attempt at humour

personally I find them very disappointing as they were recommend to me as sounding like (one of my holiest of holys) The Teardrop Explodes, that is basically my gripe with them

<---- sits on naughty step
