The kids are alright (sometimes)
Posted by Steve Turner on 27 January 2010 - 7:35pm.
My 10 year old daughter has been putting a lot of effort in at school in preparation for her Sats and as a result I rewarded her with the chance to buy a couple of cd's in the 2 for £10 promotion at HMV at the weekend.
Naturally she was eager to play them in my car. Never usually fills me with avid anticipation and the weekends choices of The Saturdays and Beyonce were not going to increase my excitement levels.
However she was adamant I had to listen to one song in particular by Beyonce called Halo. It has become completely addictive and I consider it a perfect pop song. I am sure many amongst the massive will think it complete tripe but occasionally it feels good to be guided by your kids.

Beyonce
is alright. She really is. The woman can sing some. And looks wonderful.
With you
Heard this in HMV. So unfamiliar with the Bonce in general that it took me quite a while to work out who and what it was. It's great.
Halo is lovely
I was a bit teary after I saw that.
The Saturdays aren't great although there are one or two songs that are alright on that album.
I think Beyonce
fits into a long line of quite brilliant performers who are sneered at by guitar band likers mainly, it would seem, because they come from a culture where sheer ability to perform, musical ability and commercial success are seen as positives rather than a cause for embarassment.
In "Indie" circles, and in the Mojo-world of resorting to reviving failed genres like Prog or imagining Bob Dylan remains relevant rather than admitting to the brilliance of much black american music, those are looked on as the worst possible crimes. Being an emaciated boy playing distorted bar chords whilst staring at the ground is seen as being more authentic rather than a little stunted and ordinary.
Somehow we've got a little distanced from the true rampant spirit of great music and I hear it a lot more from Beyonce than I do from the likes of Coldplay.
I think "Crazy In Love" is better than "Smells Like Teen Spirit".
I think "Superstition" is probably the best record ever made.
I have friends who think Stevie Wonder is the "Just called to Say I Love you" guy. Oh, how they sneer. They call Motown classics "X-Factor Music".
IS this just ignorance or something a little more worrying?
Definitely a lot of snobbery around
but I love a good pop song and have hits by the likes Britney, Beyonce and R Kelly on my iPod. I even genuinely liked some Take That songs before they released Back For Good and everyone loved them!
Anyway, the point I wanted to make is that not all of the skinny-jeans mob are so blinkered, as I am sure that Crazy In Love was NME's single of the year in 2003!
My teenage daughter's been playing this since Christmas
Obviously the woman can sing.
Beyonce is great, but not Halo
I don't think the ballady stuff really suits her! Single Ladies, Crazy In Love and Work It Out are all fantastic upbeat tunes. True funk. She's a proper all round performer as well, good dancer, nothing to fault really. And a good actress!
Is there a snobbery against black/pop/soul music? I don't know if there is, but maybe I'm just negatively biased. Indie guitar pop just bores me these days.
Hang on..
So not all kids turn their noses up at being given music on CD then despite what the media (Word Magazine included) tells us?
Agree in part
All my three had CDs for Xmas and the two with the rubbish iPod Shuffles play their CDs on a player in their rooms. The one with the iPod Nano immediately loaded all three CDs onto his iTunes/iPod and has never played his actual CD once.
On the subject in the lead post, I agree with the Lady GaGa 'shout out'. She could be the new Madonna.
Before you get too carried away......
This is regular correspondent ST's dter, i.e. dter of the most prolific purchaser in Word-dom. You haven't seen what she gets as a punishment, it's the full £50 on Amazon!
(Sorry, Steve, couldn't resist)
I
almost get that...
