The GREATEST BACKING VOCAL EVER IS....
Posted by Bodhisattva on 4 July 2010 - 11:09pm.
What are the stand alone great backing vocals?
I offer two:
Cliff Richard "We Don't Talk Anymore"
"And I aint losin' sleep (BV: SLeee-HEEEEEEEEP)/ Aint I Aint countin' sheep (BV: SHeeee-HEEEEEEEEEP"
Imagine the rehearsal on that.
Also Roxy Music's Re-Make Re-Model where we hear what I believe was actually Bryan Ferry's number plate filling the gap:
"She's the sweet-est Queen I ever seen - (BV:CPL 593A!!!)

A pedant writes...
It was CPL593H, rather than 'A'. H was the then current registration letter.
Not Now John by Pink Floyd.
For the Doo-Wop "Fuck All That", whilst Gilmour gleefully sings about how poor the British work ethic is, whilst presumably glaring at Roger, who wouldn't even let him near the microphone for the rest of the LP.
No contest
It's this...
The backing singers are the Mellomen, fact fans.
Pure Class...
I wish kids these days could grow-up with that kind of warmth.
Possibly
though my experience with my own children is that they love all the old Disney stuff too, it's all still around after all
Featuring
The utterly brilliant Thurl Ravenscroft, worthy of his own thread some day. Also the voice of Tony the tiger.
Bom-bo-bom-bom
Woof!
rape! murder!
It's just a shot away....
For me...
...it's the ghostly, distant, reverb-drenched stuff that first pops up at 1:16 here:
That "Here... I... am" towards the end (3:12) is one of the moments that will never ever get old, for me. I do love a good backing vocal.
Always loved
Gladys Knight & The Pips, Midnight Train To Georgia (whoo whoo)
Is the right answer.
The only song I always sing the backing vocals to, rather than the lead.
"World, World, it's his, his and hers alone..."
But surely THE moment is..
"I'll be there with him."
"I Know you will"
A like minded person
I am exactly the same. I always sing the backing vocals and can never resist doing so. An up arrow for a fellow frustrated Pip.
It's got to be 'Respect'
Aretha's version, obviously, which is really a duet between her and the backing vocalists
Hit The Road Jack by Ray Charles
A proper call and response, practically a duet like Respect, dramatic, funky, short, perfect.
Too True.
"I want my, I want my, I want my MTV...."
good ambivalence of delivery there.
Likewise, erm .... well done Sting... I suppose ...*mutters to self*
"Ugh, ahh, ugh, ahh, ugh, ahh"...
from Fleetwood Mac's Big Love.
Not sure about it being the best, but it was certainly memorable.
Whaddaya mean cooties? No cooties on me!
the backing vocalists on Frank Zappa's Dinah Moe Humm included Tina Turner
LB & TP
Lindsay Buckingham's backing vox on Tom Petty &TH's Walls (Circus) kick a great song into space.
http://open.spotify.com/track/5yEpB2g3CbuVk4YmAkzkOK
Jimmy Mack - Laura Nyro
Simply gorgeous.
I'm not sure if it counts...
as a backing vocal as such, but Liz Fraser on Felt's Primitive Painters?
Two contenders
God knows what key Keith is singing in but it's perfect
I'm pretty sure I read an interview with Bryan McLean where he said that the dominant lead vocal by Arthur Lee was actually the backing vocal, and his (weaker) voice was the lead. They got switched around in mixing, which was something he wasn't particularly happy about, and the melody of the song was thus changed forever (pun intended).
agree re exile
but i can't decide whether it is "Tumbling Dice" or "Let it Loose"
Michael McDonald on 'Peg'
... kicks in around 6.20 in this clip.
Neil Hannon
On Robbie Williams' No Regrets. Lovely.
With just a smidgeon of Walkeresque irony.
And Neil Tennant.
Yes
Two Neils. Perfect. Its a great song. Is it a Guy Chambers creation?
Runaround Sue...
... without a shadow of a doubt.
Robert Wyatt's backing vocals on Brian Eno's...
... "Put a Straw Under Baby" are certainly , erm, distinctive.
Knowing Me Knowing You
All that 'This time I know I have to go this time I know"
And Gladys Knight & The Pips' Midnight Train To Georgia.
Good one
Hate the very essence of Abba to my core. But also secretly love them deeply. The whispered "...memories..." line does it for me in that song.
Does Your Mother Know?
I love the girls' backing vocals in the chorus of 'Does Your Mother Know?' - so perfectly innocent and yet so lustily knowing at the same time. Very clever indeed.
Two contenders.
There's only really two contenders for me. On the previously mentioned Gimme Shelter (Mary M?) and David Crosby, on Neil Young's Ohio.
Or how about
Randy Newman having an argument with his own backing singers on " Shame" from " Bad Love"
"Easy Skankin'" / "Leader of the Pack"
I love the little "Spliff!" on the end here:
"Excuse me while I light my spliff" (BV: "Spliff!")
And I love the conversational backing vocals on Shangri-Las records - a bunch of gossiping girls and no limits on scansion:
"You get the picture?" (BV: "Yes, we see")
"My folks were always putting him down"
(BV: "Down, down")
"They said he came from the wrong side of town"
(BV: "What d'ya mean when you say that he came from the wrong side of town?")
Leader of the Pack
would be one of my choices too
(along with Mick's drawl on Carly Simon's You're So Vain)
You're Sixteen - Ringo
Harry Nilsson's backing vocals steal the song.
This always works for me
Can I have another go?
Success by Iggy Pop in which Iggy's largely improvised lead vocal is echoed by David Bowie and a bunch of brickies (aka Tin Machine) having a laugh. The best bit is when Iggy runs out of steam, stutters and splutters out '..oh shit', the BVs continue to replicate him faithfully.
...Hooray Success!!
Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi
Shooo BopBopBopBop!
Meaningless but joyful.
Another Aretha song
I offer "I Say a Little Prayer". Forever, forever...
You're So Vain
Where the BV (M. Jagger) threatens to overwhelm the lead.
Also, a big Up Arrow for Gladys and the boys.
"Yes Tonight Josephine"
I heard this for the first time recently and it's a bit mad to say the least. I'd love to know what the backing singers made of it when they were given their parts...
Oh just thought. BEATLES.
Oh just thought. BEATLES. She's Leaving Home. John's Backing vocal...
"SHE...(BV "We never thought of ourselves. Never A thought for ourselves. We struggled hard all our lives to get by...")
Oh I'm welling up...
This surely must be a contender:
Doo wop stuff is the obvious contender
So if it's gonna be doo wop, it's gotta be the king of doo wop songs: "I Only Have Eyes For You"... "sha-boop sha-bop!"
Powerful choice Stephen..
I've always thought of this song as appearing from nowhere in terms of its influences. Yes it's doo-wop but also ethereal, jazzy, unique. Far out.
Why David Lynch hasn't used that tune...
... I do not know. I think it's one of the most sinister things I've ever heard.
Maybe not the best,
but to my knowledge the only song named after the backing vocals;
"It's In His Kiss ( The Shoop Shoop Song )"...
And if there is another I'm sure someone in the Massive will set me straight soon enough :)
Papa...
Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow?
Yup
that didn't take long.
I had a sneaking suspicion there were others, but I couldn't think of any. Good work!
Surely the Beloved Kate's
Surely the Beloved Kate's finest hour? Or 5m28s anyway.
Then there's her moaning away
on Gabriel's "No Self Control". I'm not surprised he hadn't.
The achin' 'My my my my' on "Forever" The Beach Boys
tears me up like confetti.
A song with the same title...
…by Kokomo. There's a glorious interaction at about 1:12 between the lead singer (Dyan Birch) and the backing singers (Frank Collins and Paddie McHugh). It goes:
Dyan – '... And if you still want me, baby...'
BV - 'Sure do'
Dyan - '... I sure want you'
BV - 'Sure do'
Dyan - 'Sure do'
Simple, tender and soulful. Gets me every time.
'Forever' clip
Shotgun Express......'I Could Feel The Whole World Turn Round'
Beryl Marsden on easily Rod Stewart's greatest, or should that be only, claim to fame.
Mod-tastic.
Fifty posts and no Mamas & Papas?
Fie and for shame! Here's California Dreamin'. And here are the hairs on the back of my neck rising of their own volition.
i was going to say them but
I figure they kind of sing as one harmony group. Much like this:
Then there's this from Amy
The BVs are good for their harmonies and sassiness. What I love, though, is the way, when Amy sings "What kind of fuckery are we? Nowadays you don't mean dick to me," the BVs prettily echo "...dick to me." Amy Winehouse is bloody great.
"You made me miss the Slick Rick gig..."
("...Ohh, Slick Riiick")
.
Mike Mills
on almost any early REM track. He's singing a different lyric so maybe it doesn't count as backing vocals. But hey its fab either way.
I've always liked the
"Time I had some time alone" on ITEOTWAWKI(aiff).
While i'm here I'll start a list of sightly differnt ones
- the clearly sceptical ladies on Killdozer's "King of Sex"
- the backing vocals on Butthole Surfers' version of the Underdog theme (badoo, badoo, badoo, etc)
- the "men together today" backing to Blackout by British Sea Power
-Red's borderline ridiculous contribution to bonnie Prince Billy's version of Puff the Magic Dragon
- and dunno if it's strictly a backing vocal but the "YOOOUUUU"s in Dinosaur Jr's version of Just Like Heaven
.
Greatest BVs ever...
Kylie Minogue track 'Shocked'. During the chorus where Miss M implores that she was 'shocked to my very foundations', the BV implies that she was actually '****ed' to her core fundamentals.
Queen
Somebody to Love.
Sorry, feel free to yawn... but the answer as usual is....
D*v*d B*wie: Young Americans (though I could never work out if it was "aaaalll RIGHT" or "aaaalll NIGHT").
(Oh, and the "I heard the news today oh boy" bit is cheekily good as well)
David Crosby again.....
...and it takes some back up to make Collins sound that good
Patsy Cline
The only possible backing vocal for a song about a train?
Choo-choo, pum pum.
Jordanaires?
Not just ironic..
Great track, fantastic production, the girls leap out into the room (heard on a good hifi)..
It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Mike Mills' backing vocal, the 'Time I spent.." line makes the song the triumph it is. I'd also be tempted to include Get Up and Near Wild Heaven. Both Mr. Stipe and Mills are wonderful lead and backing vocalists. Can we remind them of this since they seem to have forgotten, sadly.
Good call on REM
this is a great example from MTV Unplugged
surely the all time classic REM BVs
are "hi... hi hi" in 'Pop Song 89'?
Would I be far out of line to suggest that perhaps Michael Stipe was fond of something a little stronger than espresso to perk him up in those days?
Not sure about greatest ever...
...but I'm really fond of the BVs on 'Going For The One' by Yes (studio version). Give it a fresh ears listen. Amazing!
YES!
I can't agree more. Chris Squire is one of Rock's great unsung vocalists. There are dozens of songs in the Yes canon that would be empty without his counterpoints to Jon's lovely warblings. Have you ever heard the Drama album? He's brilliant alongside Trevor Horn on that too.
We were talking about it on another thread:
Walk On Gilded Splinters by one Mac Rebbenak... the way he stood all the singers at different distances from the mic gives it this amazing spatial feel like the voices are coming at you from out of the darkness.. voodoo recording magic fo sho.
Bedsitter - Soft Cell
BVs by Marc Almond
"I'm waiting - for something - I'm only - passing time"
Well I like it.
Diana Ross and the Supremes
Love Child. Just love it when they sing 'Tenement slum' as a backing vocal.
Also Barry Gibb singing "It out to be illegal" behind Barbra Streisand always raises a smile.
Gimme Shelter or Lonely Avenue
or maybe even 20th Century Boy
Early 80s
Some of these will probably raise an eyebrow, but they were songs I loved before I began to worry about what was cool.
The Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star (I love the girl vox - they sing in such an affected accent)
Squeeze - Black Coffee In Bed (Elvis Costello and Paul Young, with one of my favourite Costello moments of all time when he starts ad-libbing into the fade)
Kid Creole And The Coconuts - Annie I'm Not Your Daddy (all of it is just superb, and the backing vocals are hooky as anything)
The Go-Gos - Our Lips Are Sealed (There's a Jane Wiedlin backing vocal that's lovely)
OK, here's where I start losing you...
Bucks Fizz - My Camera Never Lies (there's a moment when one of them sings 'my camera has good eyes' that still gets me now. I know it's not a cool tune, but I still love it...)
Dollar - Give Me Back My Heart (the multi-tracked harmony vocals over the end are just superb - it's no wonder that everyone wanted to work with Trevor Horn after he did his work with Dollar, they are superb productions. Honestly, they really are..)
Spirit
How about Give a Life, Take a Life from Clear Spirit or Nature's Way from Dr Sardonicus?
The Beach Boys seem quite popular in this thread
so how about Brian Wilson on backing vocals for Belinda Carlisle?
Maxine by Donald Fagen
The prosecution rests, your honour.
