The great Brian Glover
Posted by Olthwaite on 21 March 2010 - 9:31pm.
The news that Sheffield United used the football clip from Kes as a team-building exercise reminded me what a great comedian and actor Brian Glover was.
He had a hard man face you could never take seriously because it was so expressive and a honking Yorkshire voice like a Dalek from Barnsley.
He was also a great physical comedian. On The Best of ITV Wrestling he's Leon Arris, prancing about and pontificating.

Both my fave Glover moments
I couldn't find online for copyright reasons but its his turn in the Slaughtered Lamb who sent the Yanks away with a flea in their ear and the advice to 'stay on the path' due to werewolves - which they ignore, the idiots.
The other was in 'Porridge' as Mr Heslop who got a job in the library as 'I read a book once -green it was' and tales of a stay with his wife's sister in Sidcup.
But yes it was hard to take him seriously. That funeral scene in Alien 3 when he is reading the eulogy is hilarious.
I thankee young 'un
I was trying to explain the concept of "professional" wrestling on World Of Sport and the grappler that Les Kellett only the other day. Pure TV gold. I can just see my nan taking her teeth out before getting worked up over a bout like that.
I heart Brian Glover
and if stocky northern wrestling ex-teachers were my thing, I would have made him my bride.
This is part one of a Play For Today thing that's hidden away on Youtube.
I literally bumped into him somewhere...
...in the East End many, many years ago. I said sorry and looked up and, realising it was him, said "I'm so sorry, Mr. Glover. You're not going to hurt me are you?" He smiled and said "I wouldn't hurt you, lad" and walked off.
Breaks the ice at parties
Some arts discussion programme on BBC2 in the early 1980s had Brian Glover, among others, reviewing recent TV programmes.
One of the programmes they were reviewing was a light fly-on-the-wall thing about "typical" Brits in Benidorm getting sunburn, eating egg & chips, drinking too much and falling over.
As the rest of the panel were discussing how wonderful it was, and comparing notes on how awful some of the people were, Brian Glover sat glowering, with his arms folded.
When it came to his turn, he let rip with a very articulate and and angry rant about BBC programmers routinely mocking the working class people of Britain. He was very damning - and he had a point.
"You'll never stick it out!"
Another great Glover moment - playing Flint in "Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads"
I just watched him in an early episode of The Sweeney...
and he stole every scene he was in. A great actor.
I've played on that football
pitch! This is my only claim to fame but I'm more than happy with it.
