The Grateful Dead - Management Gurus

Carl Parker's picture

Who would have thought it? Those counter-cultural, don't have nothing to do with the man, guitar jamming hippies were in fact pioneers of a business model. They created and delivered superior customer value and their value soared.

You can read how in this article from Atlantic Monthly:

To be fair...

The Dead's business model was never about 'stuffing it to the man' but it was about having total control so they didn't have to compromise on quality.

No record company would pay for (say) The Wall Of Sound SR system, or to have an guitar R&D organisation like Alembic, so they needed to control their own finances from the start.

Rock Scully's autobiography is particularly good on this.
