The Gaslight Anthem

Remote Control's picture

Any Massive people heard the new album, or is it a bit young'n'tattooed for these parts?

I got the last one for £3.99 new on Amazon and it's good fun, but I'm hesistant about buying a second, still not sure if they're less the new Springsteen than the punk Bon Jovi...

I'd say David Hepworth has heard it

judging by his review in the new issue.

I wouldn't want to put words in his mouth

but without having my copy to hand I'd say "Not as much as the last one". I think it pretty much reflected your initial doubts, actually.

The Queen Of Lower Chelsea

off the new record, is a good tune.

GOT IT

Only 10 Tracks? - Brevity on albums can sometimes be good while on others you ask the question - What If?
I have to say that this one lacks the instant appeal of the last one that bordered on being on a 'classic'. Springsteen patronage should have resulted in a more constructive approach to the final product. No doubting Brian has the voice, but the ability to maintain it long-term, in respect of the songwriting, is coming into question.
The recent UK gigs were good, but perhaps too loud according to friends who went to the Birmingham gig.
Oh by the way uf you want a good short album this year get 'Harper Simon' that has an enduring quality.

It's good but.......

....not as good as The '59 Sound or The Senor and the Queen EP. Saved some e-Music credits specifically for American Slang and am a little disappointed.

A bit "samey" throughout the ten tracks. Fallon seems to be expanding his songwriting subjects into a more personal plane but the music can sometimes feel like you are being bludgeoned into submission.

I've always been quite enthusiastic about them and when friends have asked me to describe them I always came up with the line about "Springsteen fronting The Clash". Not necessarily always a good thing.

Anyway - here's my personal favourite

I really like it.

It's my first encounter with the band and seems to be the result of a collision between The Hold Steady and The Boss. Which is a very good mixture, IMHO.

Me too

Find this one a bit more tuneful and less shouty than the first

I think they belong to the 1WD category of artists

One will do.

thanks, Mr H

That's decided me.

And the 1WD

is usually a "Best of..."

1WD

Having heard the new record and Sink or Swim, I'm inclined to agree with Mr. H's comment that the last one is all you need. But I never heard it expressed that way. So who else falls into that category? Or has it been discussed at length here and I'm late for the party?

The Hold Steady?
Coldplay?
Neil Young?
The Clash?
The Stones since 1972?

Other suggestions?

Definitely not Neil Young

'Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere', 'Harvest', 'After The Goldrush', 'Zuma', 'On The Beach' ... all must-haves, and I could keep going.

Hold Steady albums don't differ hugely but I've got the last four and like and play them all.
