The First Rule Of Rock...

D.Green's picture

is, the same as the first rule of football.

'At any level, get yourself a decent goalkeeper or else you are going nowhere'

Replace 'Goalkeeper' with 'Drummer'.

Unless you are The Velvet Underground.

1

To be fair to Mo...

...she was the 'right' drummer for the VU.

In the same way the Ringo was the 'right' drummer for the Fabs (despite not being the best drummer in the group) and Meg is the right drummer for the White Stripes.

2
Paul Waring | 16 February 2010 - 1:16pm

Whoah there!

I aint dissing the Velvets!

That's what i meant.

Ish.

0
D.Green | 16 February 2010 - 1:24pm

I'm confused

Are you saying that Spurs should replace Gomes with Phil Collins?

0
Ahh_Bisto | 16 February 2010 - 2:12pm

P'raps not...

...though Stone the Crows may have been much better with Alan Rough on the riser. We'll never know.

0
pocket.calculator | 16 February 2010 - 2:17pm

THERES ONLY TWO ANDY GORAMS...

Christ - this is a disaster.

Lets gently move on...

0
D.Green | 16 February 2010 - 2:31pm

The Glitter Band...

...could've had one each. Or Adam and the Ants. 'On drums: Andy Gorham! AND on drums: Andy Gorham! Give them a big hand!"

0
pocket.calculator | 16 February 2010 - 2:42pm

Be fair ...

... at least Gomes hasn't gone off to make a lot of crap solo records.

0
Rotherhithe Hack | 16 February 2010 - 10:01pm

once

i saw a band called The Bastard Sons of Hamish McAlpine

1
Sour Crout | 16 February 2010 - 2:24pm

A few examples

that may well prove your rule to be correct:

1/The Who never got going until Keith Moon joined.
They died when he "dis-joined".

2/The Rolling Stones are still going despite everything....."Sir" Charlie Watts is still in the stool.

3/John Bonham died...so did Led Zeppelin.

0
Blue Sky | 16 February 2010 - 2:43pm

Fact

Genesis would have been half the group they were without Jimmy Rimmer between the sticks.

Question: who is the Bruce Grobbelaar of rock?

0
Martin | 16 February 2010 - 3:14pm

Kenny Jones

Of course.

0
Indus | 16 February 2010 - 8:54pm

I've heard

Ian Paice is a great shot stopper, but rubbish at coming out for crosses.....Peter Shilton uses two bass drums !!

0
Excitable Boy | 16 February 2010 - 3:56pm

Ringo = Dino Zoff

Did the simple things well. Could always be relied upon to keep a clean sheet. Unflashy. Officially the third best drummer of all time.

0
Martin | 16 February 2010 - 5:07pm

Oh God

Why did i start this?

And could someone explain the 'Andy Goram' thing for those who can summon the energy to read it as I cant be bothered?

pocket?

0
D.Green | 16 February 2010 - 4:06pm

Scizophrenia

(from Wikipedia)
After it was reported in the press that Goram had a mild form of schizophrenia, fans responded with a chorus of "Two Andy Gorams, there's only two Andy Gorams". This chant quickly gained popularity, and became the title of a book documenting humorous football chants.

0
Rigid Digit | 16 February 2010 - 4:14pm

With pleasure...

...Rangers FC goalie Andy Gorham exited himself from the Scotland squad citing being 'not mentally attuned' to play. ie: he was diagnosed as schizophrenic.

Cue the best football chant of all time: 'Two Andy Gorhams; there's only two Andy Gorhams...'

0
pocket.calculator | 16 February 2010 - 4:12pm

I...

Thank You!

Anybody want to pick up my original contention?...

Dont blame you.

0
D.Green | 16 February 2010 - 4:15pm

Sounds like a good rule

I cannot think of a single exception, and can think of lots of examples.

Maybe one that comes to mind is Oasis: didn't they have two drummers, and were equally successful with each? I probably can't comment though as I hate Oasis and don't actually rate either of their drummers...

(As an aside, has anyone else noticed the strange coincidence regarding the number of drummers in rock history called "Alan White"? What's that all about?)

0
Stephen Merrick | 16 February 2010 - 4:26pm

Many Alan Whites

One Carmine Appice, one Trilok Gurtu and one Nana Vasconcelos.

0
pocket.calculator | 16 February 2010 - 4:30pm

Eh? what about the old chant?

'There's only two Nana Vasconcelos's'

Anyway...

0
D.Green | 16 February 2010 - 4:34pm

The Clash

Different band when Topper Headon replaced Terry Chimes

Who - never the same band without Moony

Iron Maiden - Nicko McBrain vs Clive Burr (sounded more 'solid' with Nicko)

Oasis - different drummers for different phases of career
Tony McCarroll: Beakthrough
Alan White: Big Success
Zakk Starkey: The Overblown/Bloated Period)

Squeeze (Glison Lavis), Blondie (Clem Burke) & Roxy Music (Paul Thompson) - would they have been the same bands without the recognisable/signature sound/beat/thud of thier respective drummers?

The original drummers in Sister of Mercy & Echo and The Bunnymen were the best

0
Rigid Digit | 16 February 2010 - 4:39pm

'Excuse me, Mr Gadd...

get off that stool and let Rat Scabies sit down. Im sure we will still be the same band.'

- Donald Fagen.

0
D.Green | 16 February 2010 - 4:55pm

Oasis

I'd say the overblown / bloated period took place whilst White was still in the band. He held the sticks for Be Here Now and Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants, after all.

0
Spartacus Mills | 16 February 2010 - 6:34pm

Thing about Dan/Gadd is...

...on the Classic Albums: Aja doc, Gadd doesn't even get a mention. I wonder if they fell out? Rick Marotta got a whole section to show us how he came up with the beat for Peg, but Gadd? Nada. I was waiting to hear about the whole title-track, sight-reading-the-chart-got-it-second-take thing.

0
pocket.calculator | 16 February 2010 - 5:15pm

Gadd was too expensive for the Classic Albums producer

You want him to play, you pay...

But here's a famous clip of him showing off.

0
stimpy | 16 February 2010 - 6:33pm

But...

...he didn't even get a mention in the doc. Given that the drum solo in Aja is one of the defining moments in the band's entire catalogue, I just thought it was a bit weird.

0
pocket.calculator | 16 February 2010 - 6:35pm

but ol' Pretty Purdie got a mensh didn't 'e

and oh man - that Purdie shuffle jus' as good as the Ali one..

0
Sheev | 16 February 2010 - 11:15pm

'Purdie Shuffle'

'Cruyff Turn'!

0
D.Green | 17 February 2010 - 12:42am

Jeez

That is good.

0
D.Green | 16 February 2010 - 6:51pm

XTC 0, Melbourne Dynamo 2

The Swindon lads were never quite the same after letting that Terry Chambers go down under on a Bosman.

0
DC Eisenhower | 16 February 2010 - 5:15pm

Speaking of Terry Chambers

A couple of years ago I had a Swindon-related chat with an Internet stranger who claimed Terry Chambers was a cousin who'd been a page boy at her sister's wedding, and produced this photo...

0
pocket.calculator | 16 February 2010 - 5:37pm

I disagree I think they got better

REM on the other hand without Bill Berry oh dear

0
MrRadio | 16 February 2010 - 6:51pm

Agreed re: XTC...

...never liked REM.

0
pocket.calculator | 16 February 2010 - 7:16pm

Yes..

Not that I'm an expert on them but Bill Bruford's effortless ability to play in 127/43 before a swift transition to 3.23/8 or whatever must have made his successor sweat a bit.

0
Lenny Law | 16 February 2010 - 6:07pm

when you say XTC got better after Chambers

I'd agree that the songs got better, but I'm not convinced that the dynamism of the recordings improved to quite the same extent.

0
DC Eisenhower | 16 February 2010 - 8:04pm

Fair point...

...

0
pocket.calculator | 16 February 2010 - 8:23pm

Random thoughts about drummers.

Bruce Springsteen only really got going when Max Weinberg joined the band.
The Sex Pistols would have sounded a mess without Paul Cook.
Gilson Lavis is a fine drummer but Squeeze were at their live peak for the brief period Pete Thomas was behind the kit.
On the subject of The Who (several posts above), I'd say that Zak Starkey does a very creditable impersonation of Keith Moon, which is part of the reason they are still such a powerful band live.
Rick Buckler's style is unique and The Jam would have sounded quite different with any other drummer.

0
Indus | 16 February 2010 - 9:03pm

Dave Clark..

is not really the exception we've been looking for as the DC5 were pretty typical 60s chart fodder but, damn, was he one-dimensional.

0
Declan | 17 February 2010 - 1:24am

Ginger Baker vs Mitch Mitchell

I may get a dressing down for this but I've always thought Mitch Mitchell is a far better drummer than Ginger Baker. In fact I think it's the main reason I prefer the Experience to the Cream.

I would be interested to know if anyone agrees with me? Sometimes I feel a bit out on a limb because I think even Jimi thought Ginger Baker was better. But I just can't hear it.

The key comparison is to compare Hendrix's Sunshine Of Your Love with Cream's version. Hendrix's one just leaps about with energy and the Cream one is a bit lumpy with all that heavy tom stuff.

0
Stephen Merrick | 18 February 2010 - 1:21am

Agreed

and Hendrix's records without him are inferior.
