The First Latitude podcast (or 'I share an accountant with Nigel Kennedy') - featuring Geoff Llloyd and Rob Young.

Image

Our first podcast from the site at Latitude features Rob Young (far right, right hand picture), writer of Electric Eden, probably our music book of the year so far, and Geoff Lloyd (middle, left hand picture), who's here broadcasting from the site for Absolute Radio. Recorded in the luxurious surroundings of our Portkabin audio suite, it covers Vaughan Williams, Mark's posh digs in Walberswick, the correct response to a fellow camper who sings the blues in the middle of the night, The National, how to distinguish between a real beard and a fashion beard, how Tom Jones lets himself go at Christmas and the dark pact forged between Florence + The Machine and Claire's Accessories. Get it while it's hot.

One copy of 'Electric Eden' duly pre-ordered...

It sounds like it will be a superb read. Great podcast, glad you're all having a good time. Just lay off the brown acid.

Lyle Lovett doesn't need a pretty woman...

..to play cello. John Hagen has been his sideman for about 25 years.

Great podcast....great laugh!

First of all

as a Suffolk lad, born and bred, I feel it's my obligation to point out it's spelled Walberswick: a lovely little resort and a great place to catch crabs (fnarr fnarr).

Interesting listening to that podcast after having been witness to Geoff Lloyd's intro for Belle and Sebastian. He did follow your suggestions fairly closely and got lots of cheering from the crowd, though he was mocked by Stuart Murdoch for suggesting that B&S had the "smell of the second-hand book shop" about them. What did puzzle me, however, is that his introduction was practically straight after Crystal Castles, i.e. around 20 minutes before the band came on.

Walberswick

Duly corrected. Thanks.

The post-mortem on Geoff's early intro features in the second Latitude podcast.

Russ Ballard?

Where's he playing like? Great song. Wish there were more groups like that in the chart today. It's a fab look and a groovy sound.

Absolute Radio

I've avoided Absolute Radio since Pete and Geoff did the evening show on Virgin as I assumed it was too laddish in the 90's Loaded/Nuts/Zoo mould, but after listening to Geoff Lloyd, I may try it again. I did have to listen to Christian O'Connell for a week last year, and though it was excruciating.

On another note, that Rob Young is handsome, ain't he?

On your last point, JoLean

I was just thinking the same thing. He looks and sounds a thoroughly lovely fellow.

RE: most iphone owning festival yet

There was a chap in the extended circle of friends we where with who seemed to spend the entire weekend reading either ipad or possibly a Sony reader or similar. Every time we saw him he was engrossed almost as if he was there on sufferance. Seemed an odd reversal of the usual festival broad-brush stereotype of the eternally patient rock fan wife* happily ensconced in her chair, drink to hand reading some doorstop while her other half bops around to Kirsten Hirsh.
*Also seen at steam fairs and vintage car rallies etc.

Alternative headline

It occurred to me in the shower this morning that an alternative headline for the article on Richard Hawley, Bing Crosby and the bakelite microphone could be, 'Cole's Crooner.'

Chiz.
