The Fancy Cheese People

Dave Holley's picture

When the team were discussing band names that never were during the superb 100th podcast, they talked about The Fancy Cheese People and Andrew Harrison, I think it was, mentioned the sign at Farringdon. There was a brief discussion as to whether the sign is still there. Spookily I can confirm that it is not; the sign is now inside the house of one of my best friends. He used to get the train into Farringdon every day and the sign amused him. He's in the property game and when he heard that the property with the sign was on was due for redevelopment, he got in touch with the owner and bought it (sign not property!). Much to the dismay of his house proud wife, he has insisted that the sign (which is of not insiginficant size) be put up in his living room. This has come to pass. His proudest moment was when he had the sign laid out in his back garden awaiting hanging in the living room. The Google Earth satellite chose that particular moment to photograph his back garden and the "fancy cheese people" sign could be seen in his garden. He has a print of that next to the sign.

Having just googled "fancy cheese people" it turns out to have been featured in Finistere - a film made to accompany the St Etienne album of he same name. Rock and Cheese Roll!! See link. http://arts.guardian.co.uk/image/0,,1803702,00.html

I'm glad it has a home

I do think these sort of signs should end up on display either with lucky individuals or better still in museum of london or similar particularly in the age of the blandification of our high streets.
The fancy cheese people wouldn't have passed muster with the first focus group today.

It was me who mentioned it

...and goddamn your friend, as I wanted it and tried to get in touch with the developer but to no avail.

Still, at least it's gone to a good home.

Small consolation to you, Five-Centres

But the sign has found a very happy home. My mate is very proud of it and I think even his wife quite likes it now.

On this subject : shops signs band names

The kid clothes shop in the market in Angel (london) always looks like a good compilation name to me.

"Rough Cut Casuals (incorporating Young Folk)"

(I took a picture but some of the letters have fallen off the sign so not a great pic)

New bombay Bicycle Club

There a restaurant in Essex Rd Islington with the same name?

A chain - three restaurants

and loads of delivery only sites across London/Soth-East

http://www.thebombaybicycleclub.com/rest_hampstead.html

The original restaurant is in Balham - and is a bit of a media movers/shakers hangout - James Naughtie, Michael Grade, Andy Duncan (C4 head) amongst others - all regulars.

As is Gordon Ramsay.

I live 127 paces

from the balham branch and it benefits from being next door to londons greatest pub. I have never seen movers and shakers in either establishment.

actually

I made that last bit up - wanted to start a meejah rumour "Grade woos Naughtie to Serious Channel start-up

but I have seen all of the above in there at various times - honest. And not to mention Ainsley Harriott, Neil Pearson, Johnny Vaughan

But actually the best curry house in the area has sadly gone I see - Tabaq.
