The Fame Game
The postal fairies delivered Jeff Buckley's "Live at Sin-e" yesterday. Now I've got Grace, Sketches, L'OLympia and Mystery White Boy (that well known firm of London Theatrical agents) but have never heard his early/embryonic stuff.
So, on the drive home, put it on. CD1, first track is called "Be Your Husband", a solo acapella blues accompanied by just his own handclaps and footstamps. Awesome. I'd forgotten just how good his voice could be. The Grace songs all sound pretty good too, although there is an element of mentally adding your own backing track as you listen to them.
Now imagine you were there in that caff, supping away at your skinny latte, chomping your blueberry muffin, and this kid stood up and started to play. Would you think "Jeez, this guy is amazing" or "Pretentious pillock". Did they spot his blossoming greatness?
Amazingly talented and sadly departed too early but how close did he come to missing out completely?
I'm sure the pubs and clubs are overflowing with artistes who should have been contenders but the fickle finger of fate pointed at the gurning loon next to them and put him in Take That (delete and replace as you think fit).

Ooo! The full version of the Sin-E album
is a wonderous thing - by a long way the best official JB release.
I much prefer his guitar/vocal stuff to the band recordings.
Now all I need are some recordings of his final residency at Barrister's in Memphis when he returned to Sin-E style guitar/vocal woodshedding of new material.
I *heart* Live at Sin-é
It's such a fantastic listen and I'd argue that Jeff's talent shines through so obviously that anyone there would be captivated rather than pretentious. Mind you, by the time the recording was made, he'd been playing almost weekly gigs there for over a year and was already relatively well known due to his parentage.
It's been my dream since I was in my teens to retire early and open a café/venue in the Sin-é mould. Does anybody know of such places in the UK?
Sadly not
But I would expect when you finally pull your finger out and open one yourself it will be full of Word regulars all looking for the next big thing.
Everybody's welcome
Right, so if we call early retirement 55 that means it'll open in... 2041! See you there
Remember as well that
the released Sin-E recording was made a good 6 months after he stopped playing there.
Columbia wanted a record of his Sin-E set so they arranged one final showcase gig. By all accounts the place was stacked with Columbia execs and industry folk. The limos were lined up around the block.
Bugger
Didn't know that.....still good though
