The Emperor has no clothes.....
I have to say I was baffled by the plaudits being heaped on the Fleet Foxes, and Tuesday's live performance on Later has proved me to be justified in my bafflement. They were awful. For a band that prides itself on tight vocal harmonies their performance was disgraceful. Surely they weren't nervous?
Also the album is average at best, with only "White Winter Hymnal" standing out. I can't even listen to it any more after they massacred it on Tuesday night.
I wish them all the best, but not in my collection,
Ta ta.

King's New Clothes
I agree Iain. I just don't 'get' the Fleet Foxes.
I've said it before
Cosmic Rough Riders did it so much better.
I tend to agree as well
with Iain.
I actually quite like their recorded output and would have fancied a chance to see them live, but after Tuesday I think I'll pass on that one. Not sure what their excuse was but it was certainly a poor performance, even bearing in mind that the dynamics of music broadcast on TV are usually pretty crap.
Sadly, I turned it on just as the crowd were going apeshit at the end of Al Green, so FF clearly suffered by comparison there as well.
I might just try out my new Sky+ to see if AG was as good as I suspected and to see if FF were as bad across all their numbers.
Hear hear....
Not much there to hang a hat on is there?
Hmmm
I'm going to see them tomorrow night.. I'm a bit anxious now.
Saying that I saw Al Green in the same venue last Sunday night and thought it was rather embarrassing.. Great voice and all that but far too much showbiz nonsense..
Also, on the back of a fantastic new record, it was really a pity that he didn't do some new. A medley of other people's soul songs, Al? I'd rather not. And he didn't give a rose to my girlfriend, the cad!
I've struggled with it as well
to be honest. Is filed with my Bon Iver album in that respect (although the decent track on the BOn Iver album is better than the decent track on the Fleet Foxes album). Have enjoyed Chatham County Line much more than either.
Whilst no FF fan
they were live on Radio 4 on Saturday and sounded absolutely fine to me.
I love their album
As for Later - they made a little mistake of starting acapella and not being in tune with the instruments when they came in. The singer looked a bit embarrassed at the end. It was only a mistake though and surely if they'd played more of their great songs it'd have been forgotten.
By the way - yes they're not as great as Al Green - who is?!
Recorded
I will watch the Friday show to see if they can improve on the live version, and also to watch the mighty Pendulum again. They were classy!
Not so bad
Fleet Foxes were slightly out of tune when the instruments came in, but they then corrected themselves and were fine by the end. It really wasn't that bad. Considerably better than the live performacnes I've seen from some hyped bands, anyway. Pendulum were actually very impressive.
Al Green is great, but mad as a sack of fruitcakes.
Is that the same as nutty as squirrel shit?
Didn't see them but there is one truly brilliant track on the album and some pretty good stuff to go with it. the ep is not as good but both are better than Bon Iver which frankly left me underwhelmed and surprised that it had been given the five star treatment.
Bon Iver- Flume
is lovely though. If the rest of the album was that good it would be a 5 star (if we did that sort of thing round here).
Another thumbs-down from me
I "trialled" the album for quite a while but it just got more iritating the more I listened to it. Other than White Winter Hymnal, it all got recycled.
Fleet Foxes and the reissued Pacific Ocean Blue
... have been the most played albums of the year so far in Sprocket Towers.
It may help that Mrs Ganglesprocket doesn't actively hate them so they can be safely played without any danger of being drowned out by vocal harrumphing from a disgruntled other half.
Missed them live, but I thought they were pretty good on Later; they sounded to me like a band correcting an error as they played their way through the tune but they are pretty new so some ragged edges are to be expected. I have a powerful weakness for bucolic folkie types and my biggest regret in life is that my mustache is so blonde that when I grow a beard there is a rather unfortunate resemblance to Michael Eavis. Any impressively bearded band singing about mountains generally does it for me as a result and they are a fine example of the type...
Well sprocketed, that Gangle
Ahead of all this, I revisited Fleet foxes LP whilst cooking sunday lunch last week. I have earlier in these pages agreed with the statements that they were really nothing that new, sold on the strength of a much free mp3d killer track. However, on my more recent listening it had sunk in a bit deeper, and it helped me get a better handle on the hype. A good first record (if the EP is disregarded) So they were wobbly on live TV, were they? Show me someone who hasn't been. At least no-one would have seen them!
