A Not Quite Definitive Best Of 2010 Lists List.....

edbell065's picture

Apologies to anyone who has already posted something similar but this has taken me rather a long time to complete hence the urge to share (and Pitchfork and the Guardian only posted their lists today)...

Over the last few nights (when I could have been doing something constructive), I've compiled a 'list of lists' based upon end of year polls from a number of non-specialist music websites and magazines. The sources were;

Clash / Drowned In Sound / The Guardian / Mojo / NME / Pitchfork / Q / Spin / Stereogum / Uncut

The Rules...
- The number of albums that each magazine had in their list varied from 40-75, for fairness sake only the Top 40 from each list are included
- Points have been awarded (1-40) against each placing in each list i.e. 1st place = 40 points, 40th place = 1 point, not placed = 0 points.

Three main lists have been produced;

Albums Of 2010 (UK/US).. 181 Nominations: All Sources
US* Albums Of 2010... 79 Nominations: Pitchfork / Spin /Stereogum
UK* Albums Of 2010... 149 Nominations: Clash / DiS / The Guardian / Mojo / NME / Q / Uncut
*Refers to origin of magazine/website rather than artist.

And two UK sub-lists…

'Younger Demographic'* Albums of 2010... NME / Drowned In Sound / Clash
'Middle Aged'* Albums of 2010... Uncut / MOJO / Q / The Guardian
*Refers to target market of magazine rather than age of artist

Here's Mike Read to introduce the results in a very interesting outfit...

just wanted to say thanks

for putting so much work into this. Can't say I've heard a huge amount of much of it. But I do like Laura Marling, Foals and - surprisingly Sufjan Stevens - as I haven't really liked much of his stuff previously.

Thanks again and take that well deserved rest - at least you'll have a lot to listen to!

That's some good analysis

but you've conjured up your own categories there. Mind you, regardless of how you do the stats, Arcade Fire and Kanye West still always win. Sad times :(

Thanks!

and Hurrah for the mighty Deerhunter I say. It is heartening to see a band gradually maturing and producing some excellent work several LPs into their career (especially a beat combo on the 'indie scene' where bands seem to go from 10 people at a gig, to enormodomes and back to oblivion in the space of a year)

Cheers

Excellent work!

..and I have all but 3 of your 21- I think it's been a good year for intelligent rock music

Who are they bribing? Arcade Fire, I mean.

They can't be so universally liked that they top everything unless bags full of wonga are changing hands. I mean, they're BLOODY AWFUL.

Maybe it's because

The Arcade Fire and particularly Kanye West are very very good records.

Unsure what to think of 2010

I have 13 of the records in the top 20 uk list, only Grinderman (3), John Grant (3) Robert Plant (4) and Laura Marling (6) have been played more than twice according to my iTunes account. It may be a bit skewed as I use Sonos just as much which doesn't collate the number of times played but still....

My top 5 played (according to iTunes)

David Ford - Let the Hard Times Roll
Mick Thomas & Michael Barclay - Head Full of Roadkill
Chris Difford - Cashmere If You Can
Teenage Fanclub - Shadows
Kristin Hersh - Crooked

Excellent work....

....but at the risk of driving you to top yourself, you do know that there is a website that amalgamates these year-end lists don't you?

At acclaimedmusic.net they include something like 150 charts from the US, UK and all over Europe. Their - or actually his - massive spreadsheets can be downloaded and played around with at will.

Your hard work is not in vain however, as Acclaimedmusic will wait to the year to finish before publishing his 2010 list.
