The Chris Evans Breakfast Show. Well?

Five-Centres's picture

Did anyone hear this today? I heard a large chunk on my way into work. It was bearable, but I can see those TOGs switching off in droves but being replaced by a whole new audience.

Evans has his fans, but I'm not sure his brand of hysteria is right for Terry's old geezers. While he's an accomplished broadcaster he's got a tendency to get a bit carried away and may be rather too shrill for mornings.

And while we're at it, is Moira Stewart really such a big deal? The way her return to the BBC been trumpeted is notable for one reason only: she's a mature woman. That's good, but she's not exactly Miss Personality, is she? Chris says she can be 'naughty' and has a wicked sense of humour, but ever since Angela Rippon surprised the nation by getting her legs out on Morecame and Wise newsreaders have been showing their game side. It's nothing new. If Huw Edwards dressed up as Lady Gaga I doubt even more than a handful of eyebrows would be raised.

Still, it's only day one, so let's see how things develop. I like Chris Evans and I wish him well, but he's got a huge weight of expectation on his shoulders.

I bet half those comedy features disappear within the month.

I suspect you're correct there Mr Centres.

The half hour or so I caught was a bit frantic, but I reckon he'll calm down. What I heard was a perfectly professional job which sounded neither like Wogan or Moyles. There was nothing to actively dislike and given time he'll settle.

Whether or not he'll be taken into people's hearts is another thing. But no one can really "plan" that can they?

Yes I listened

Agree totally with the Moira Stewart comment. She has become the 'go to' newsreader for the light-hearted brigade (Harry Hill, then Extras, now Chris Evans).

I was a little disappointed that Chris appears so worried to keep the TOGs happy. I am admittedly a bit 'move over Grandad' about this, but he should focus on pulling in people (like me) who never tuned into R2 in the mornings rather than keeping existing listeners sweet. He'll have lost most of them anyway before even starting. His early music selections reflected this, and he did sound v nervous early on. Sad that Ms Fox hasn't joined him from DriveTime, and I wish travel reporters didn't get such a 'part' (applies to all of them).

I think he is really good at what he does and will have R2 on from here on in. It's just a shame our alarm goes off before he starts (BH! Sarah K...).

Did either of you previously listen to Wogan?

If not, then the fact you listened to R2 this morning is probably a good sign for the Chris Evans show. I only ask because I never listened to Wogan but retuned to R2 (from 5Live) this morning to give it a go.

I did

but only while I was having my breakfast. I'll continue listening at that time though.

No I am new

I have been scrabbling around listening to various shows since R1 didn't do it for me. We'd love something on that the whole family can enjoy and we'll give this a good go.

I only remembered at 8.50am

i will give it a go tmrw. I didn't listen to Wogan but I do like Chris Evans (bumped into him Christmas shopping at Argos Barking!wished him good luck).

Previously 6 music

We normally have 6 music on in the morning (out of habit from the Phill Jupitus days)but tried out Chris Evans this morning, seemed OK and will probally stick with it for at least a couple of weeks.

Also agree can't see what the fuss about Moria Stewart is, all I want from a newsreader is the news!

I listened this morning

seemed like his drivetime show. The only thing I'd change is:
Lose the sports bloke (johnny) he's just dull.
Oh and get rid of the vicar (I believe this is hang over from TW) it's more trite than "thought for the day" the priest was so smarmy and high Church luvey and his homely was trite with a cherry on top.

Exactly what I thought.

It's the drive time show, but at 7 in the morning. Too lively for my tastes at that hour. I need pampering until at least 8 o'clock.

A bit odd

It's interesting that people seem to be talking about the presenter rather than the music. I'm a 6Music listener so I doubt that I'll defect but surely the job of a radio presenter is to avoid getting in the way and as such be as anonymous as possible. Most of the comments in the past about 6Music have only occurred when the presenters start getting in the way of the music (there hasn't only been one guilty party either!) but when Radio 2 is mentioned, the only talk seems to be about presenters, music is rarely (if ever) mentioned as a reason to listen. I think that's a bit odd.

Surely

It all depends what sort of radio show it is. The R2 breakfast show isn't a 'music show' per se.

Ah!

Aha! That makes sense. I don't think I've ever listened to more than about 10 minutes of Terry Wogan so I didn't realise. I assumed it was just a music show. I definately won't be listening then - I've never understood the appeal of Radio 4 first thing in the morning either (not that there's anything wrong with it - just not for me - I could forsee a ton of bricks arriving on my head without that caveat!).

No breakfast show is really about the music is it?

I liked Wogan, listened occasionally in spite of the often poor music. Even the Today programme feels like its all about the presenters sometimes.

Never tuned into Keaveny on 6music though...

disturbing image

I am still working on getting the phrase "a handful of eyebrows" out of my head.

Can't hear what all the fuss is about!

My wife forced me to listen to Wogan and it was just background mostly, though I did often catch myself thinking "move over Terry, time you gave this up!" Sure the show was sometimes funny but it was hellish repetitive and I think the only people who found it really funny were those who were old enough to be included in the Togs clique... There were a lot of self important in jokes in there!

Now chris Evans has taken over the BBC are calling it news, but it's just about radio2 evolving as it has done for years. It'll be moyles in a few years!

I enjoyed it but I could hear the pressure Evans was under "don't worry it's going to be okay!" seemed to be the key sentiment "listen I'm playing sinatra!". Just let him settle into doing his own thing!

Oi! Do me a favour?!

I thought this was pretty

I thought this was pretty good, myself. I'll miss Wogan in the mornings, and Chris Evans' style seems very different, but I could see myself listening to this on a regular basis. I mean, what's the alternative? The Today programme, perhaps, but I can't think of a single other radio breakfast show I'd want to listen to.

I'm not religious, and have no particular desire to see it scrapped, but Thought For The Day felt very out of place in the new show, though.

The Rabbi's hummus recipe

made it feel a bit more in keeping, but I know what you mean. It was a bit more relaxed, less forced overall.

Five-Centres | 12 January 2010 - 11:35am

Now he's calmer

Now he's calmed down a bit and settled in, Shaun Keaveney's show is very good indeed (although I reckon they could easily fit in at least one more record an hour). If you listened when he first took over, and thought he was a bit too forced (like I did) then it may be time to try again.
