The Candyman Cleans Up!

Gavin Adam's picture

Speech Radio Personality of the Year at the Sony Awards.

What the judges said: "A true original. A personality who’s found new and innovative ways to use the techniques of radio, delivering a unique verbal barrage, creating an endless stream of compelling ideas, and developing an obsessive following, both in London and nationally."

Excellent news! It is now compulsory for hats to be worn on the side of the head in tribute.

Unfortunately

Robbie Savage won a prize as well.

A big up

for the man. Never was I more gladdened than when I heard he was back on the airwaves. Savage? A clown, both on and off the pitch.

Savage

Used to be a neighbour of mine.I wrote to him, asking would he like to come to the school where I teach, about a mile away, and talk to the kids.
No reply.
A mate of mine attended his wedding in Wrexham.
He was approached at the wedding and asked where he lived, when he said "Leicester", was told "Good job you don't live round here, mate, we'd burn your house down".Charming.
At last nights radio awards, Savage challenged Richard Keys to a fight!

Savage

No offence Stevie, but famous footballers get loads of similar invitations. It's hard to reply to them all, let alone attend.

'Cancer DJ' does good!

Is that what it takes to get some recognition from those bastards up to their knees in whores and gin?

0
DogFacedBoy | 10 May 2011 - 11:51am

Not sure about that

Without looking I am sure dan has been a Sony winner on many previous occasions, including DJ of the year once.

0
art vanderlay | 10 May 2011 - 5:00pm

I was not sure about this award

I think he deserves it, but the timing makes it look like a sympathy award for the cripple.

On the other hand it is recognizing how much he means to people, which must be a good thing. So, on balance, a good decision.

Also..

Answer Me This, Fighting Talk and Simon Mayo got awards. All my faves.

All it lacked was AIOTM (aiotm) and that other one with the fellers off the old wotsit test.

Lying Doggo | 10 May 2011 - 12:32pm

AITOM (aitom) doesn't

AITOM (aitom) doesn't deserve an award.

Aside: Yes it does - it's brilliant.

Marvellous news!

Off for a celebratory shower with Fraser Digby's washbag

Scary hair. Is it real?

TalkSport wins "Station of the Year"

Does this mean our national radio is in good health or not...?

A constant barrage of loud advertising for building products and freshly branded loan sharks with the programming seemingly solely built around manipulating "heated debates" encouraging indignant football fans to ring in or text with their own heated opinion on expensive telephone lines putting kerching into the coffers of UTV (and of course paying Richard Keys to start "hanging out the back" of some other poor soul.)

Harumph.

The early morning weekend fishing programmes are ace though.

Agreed on Talksport.....

......every time i've heard it its Stan Collymore trying to stir up some debate. I guess its good business but at times just a bit too much.

Nice one on Danny Baker though. Very happy he won.

Almost Simon | 10 May 2011 - 3:19pm

I only listen to Talksport

in the early hours where its all bigots and conspiracy theorists. Always gives me a good laugh. And thankfully not about sport

Nice to see Peter Allen pick up an award. I always enjoy his no nonsense grumpy old man cynical dismissiveness of pain in the arse interviewees

DogFacedBoy | 10 May 2011 - 3:49pm

Peter Allen

Peter Allen's comic timing is brilliant. The split second before he says "... yes, well, thanks" often has me laughing.

0
Lying Doggo | 10 May 2011 - 4:43pm

...and, like Simon Mayo

he's a Spurs supporter.

:)

Ahh_Bisto | 11 May 2011 - 6:23pm

As is Chris Evans

.

0
fortuneight | 12 May 2011 - 2:52pm

He is Liverpool

0
kb | 13 May 2011 - 1:04pm

I'd heard that too

but a family member (and Sony employee) got chatting to him at a previous Radio Awards event (about 3 years ago) and Evans professed loyalty to White Lane, although it may have been stronger in Gazza's days.

0
fortuneight | 13 May 2011 - 1:13pm

He is probably both or neither

But coming from Warrington as he does, I guess it has to be Liverpool or United.

A History of the World in 100 Objects

A History of the World in 100 Objects only won a bronze in the Best Speech Programme category. I've never heard the winning programme (Radio 4's The Infinite Monkey Cage) but it must be bloody good if it's better than AHOTW. Was it a worthy winner?

The silver was won by - I assume - one show from Victoria Derbyshire's R5L programme (the nomination says "Hugely moving, with fine journalism in a highly emotional situation. Compelling radio involving contributors of the highest quality in a genuinely impassioned debate", which sounds like one show rather than the overall series). Does anyone know which of her shows was nominated?

0
Red Umpire | 10 May 2011 - 9:40pm

'S ok

All 4 episodes of The Infinite Monkey Cage can be downloaded as podcasts via iTunes. I'll give it a listen...

Red Umpire | 10 May 2011 - 11:33pm

She won two silvers and a gold

Brown nose alert

Love those shoes Mister Baker.

1
jackthebiscuit | 11 May 2011 - 2:28pm

Bit emotional, but

I could cry with joy at how good Candyman is looking in that pic and sounding on Radio London.
Means the world to me.

1
PaddyH | 11 May 2011 - 1:08am

Am I allowed to say...

...that Frank Skinner really should have won?

0
Paolo Meccano | 11 May 2011 - 2:00pm

No

.

0
fatmanjez | 11 May 2011 - 8:02pm

Oh.

Didn't realise this place had changed its name to The Bumlick.

Candyman going seven days a week

Danny intimated that he is going back to 5Live Saturday mornings and he's going seven days a week in September.
Could we dream that he's going to be taking back the cultural train wreck that is 606?

0
PaddyH | 11 May 2011 - 6:13pm

606 should just have a quiet burial,

maybe at sea since that is the latest trend.

Baker wins Sony - Sky dark

Baker wins Sony - Sky dark with hats.

I know that this probably into the "Well, duh" category, but after hearing lots of other DJs - experienced ones at that - you realise just how effortless Baker makes it all sound.

Frank Skinner would have been my other choice, fwliw.

0
BonzoDog | 12 May 2011 - 12:22pm

Well done DB

But I do wonder if the Sony Awards are a bit 'buggins turn'. Like...DB hasn't been any better this year, and although TalkSport has improved lately it isn't really any better than it was say 2 years ago (and its main man, Mike Parry, has left). It has such a small pool to select from - it might be better if it was every other year or something. (See also 'Newspaper of the Year').
