The Bible - the most underrated band ever?
Posted by Uncle Wheaty on 30 March 2009 - 8:57pm.
Just played "Walking The Ghost Back Home" by The Bible after a few years and it sounds marvellous.
Some 1980s cliches and Smiths copying going on but it still sounds like a great album. Boo Hewerdine at his beast?
If not the most underated band ever surely close?

I remember..
..seeing the video for 'Mahalia' on The Tube years ago, loving it, making a note to buy the album and then never getting around to it. Looks like I missed out. Spotify here I come..
Certainly one of...
"Honey Be Good" is one of my all time favourites. Gorgeous.
I'd count Joseph Arthur as one of the most underrated artistes. That'd be some bill - Joseph Arthur and The Bible. I wonder which one would be the support act? (Answer: I suspect they'd each offer it to the other.)
Spotify
Spotify is a great creation. I may be one of the few laggards that will still buy CDs as well as use services such as this.
The first car/TV maufacturer that has a Spotify service as a standard feature gets my busniess and ebBay gets the CD collection!
The Bible
Couldn't agree more Unclewheaty!! The Bible were one of my favourite bands throughout the 80's and Gracelands' follow up 'Eureka' was as good if not better IMO.
Saw them around '88 in Liverpool and were great live.
Songs were superbly written with great lyrics and usually laden with strong 'hooks'.
Got quite a bit of solo Boo stuff in the hope that he might get close but unfortunately unless there's some I've missed he hasn't.
The solo albums are good but
The solo albums are good but not as good as The Bible

Liberty Horses
by Boo Hewerdine is the best undiscovered track I've ever discovered.
the church
On the same theme, l prefered The Church.
Boo Hoo
Best of Boo, in my humble, is the fabulous and underheard duet album with Darden Smith, "Evidence", mainly accoustic guitars, with threadbare backing and production. Marvellous.
Apart from "Graceland", I find the Bible a wee bit twee, a risk thru'out Mr Hewardines canon; to earnest by far.
Darden Smith
Darden Smith on his own is worth a listen too, especially the first two albums. I had tickets to see him at the Mean Fiddler years ago but the gig was cancelled, apparently because he'd injured himself in a car accident. Darden: great name though, isn't it?
