The best new British band since..god knows when.

shane pacey's picture

Everything Everything.
You may hear snatches of just about anything in this one song.
I certainly hear XTC, Early Floyd and even Yes in the harmonies and certain chords.
It's clever, imaginative broad and funny.
I don't hold great hope in them cracking it in a climate that worships dross like The Klaxons or Editors, but I'd love to be proved wrong.
(As I was when I spied them on "Later" and immediately thought "Oh christ, another bunch of spotty herberts who think they're New Order"..until they started playing, that is.

Very clever, interesting ideas

but, despite that, I'm afraid I am faced with an overwhelming sense of 'so whatness'. I guess it's because it reminds me of XTC snippets stuck together for effect at the expense of an actual song.

But hey, it's a big musical world out there and there's probably room for all of us.

I really like it

They remind me a bit of Friendly Fires (the XTC thing, I think)

Sounds likeable

Sounded even better when I stopped watching the video. Do you think we listen too much with our eyes?

I was bought this album

last year, and I had an allergic reaction to it. It's like they're so concerned with being clever and modern and displaying technique that they've forgotten to write any songs. That one in the OP does have a tune admittedly but it's in the minority; the rest of them just stop-start without going anywhere for three-and-a-half-minutes at a time, and that lead singer has the most irritating delivery I think I've ever heard. And that's without mentioning the terrible titles: My KZ Ur BF, Photoshop Handsome, Tin (The Manhole)...

Sorry. I know that if you can't say anything nice then it's better to say nothing at all, but I read some reviews at the time and they were really positive. This is the first time I've heard a real person express any admiration for them, and my dislike of them is something I've been wanting to get off my chest for nigh-on eight months now.

I have the album

I like them, BUT I too think the lyrics are annoying. The music doesn't deserve them.

BigJimBob | 17 May 2011 - 10:16am

It's like they're so

It's like they're so concerned with being clever and modern and "displaying technique... "

This was also a disease of early XTC - maybe we just need to give them time?

man.of.soup | 17 May 2011 - 12:07pm

It took three albums

before some of XTC's more manic, butterflyish tendencies calmed down overall, and band members who weren't on a ego collision course were given more of a chance. I hope Everything Everything get that long,as I've been intrigued by the little that I've heard.

Do they have a main writer, or is it a more collaborative effort?

For XTC here, read mainly Andy Partridge (bless his probably day-glo probably non-matching probably synthetic socks at the time).

Great band, very good live too

Essentially a pop band but a good mixture of post punk jerkiness and barmy prog chord changes and tempo shifts. Get the album.

I don't think anyone worships the Klaxons anymore! I rather liked their debut, but their second one tanked. Fickle world of Indie Pop. I think EE might have a bit more longevity. They're hot, but not white hot and not at the level of selling out largish venues which some bands seem to reach all too quickly. hopefully they'll build at a more normal pace and we'll get a couple more decent records out of them.....either that out they're the next Futureheads.

Potential

but something is lacking at the moment. I think there's nothing to fall in love with although plenty remains to admire.

0
Ahh_Bisto | 17 May 2011 - 10:20am

There is a lot going on there, isn't there?

But potential? Loads, I'd say. They make me think of Boards Of Canada and The Feeling. They can certainly play and are brimming with ideas. If they can settle down a bit and come up with some decent songs then they could be something special.

Anyone care to wager on the chances of them all being privately educated?

and boy do we need *ideas* in rock and pop right now

I applaud this lot for providing a welcome relief from yet more beardy Americana, and not slavishly re-enacting the past.

I was a bit put off by the vocals (which just occasionally stray into Coldplop territory) and I thought it was a bit too NME at first but it's definitely a grower.

I like this one. I can imagine this on the main stage at Glastonbury after sunset..

0
Dr Volume | 17 May 2011 - 9:38pm

Yeah

I liked that one a lot. A bit more space for the ideas to flourish.

0
Ahh_Bisto | 18 May 2011 - 9:32am

The admiration grows..

The only tracks I'd heard were the two from "Later"
I'll have to actually buy an album recorded within the last 5 years now.

I said Boards Of Canada.

I think I meant Of Montreal.

0
Lenny Law | 17 May 2011 - 11:56pm

Boards of Montreal?

Corporate merger, makes sense

0
Donald McTroosers | 18 May 2011 - 11:35am

think

for this kind of thing, i'll stick with Field Music thanks very much

Everything Everything

Excellent band but agree Field Music and associated spin offs have the edge for me too.

Now talking of XTC influenced bands, what ever happened to Dogs Die In Hot Cars and Hot Hot Heat?

I should just Google them, shouldn't I?

0
Zanti Misfit | 17 May 2011 - 2:06pm

Dogs Die went a bit mental...

I Love Field Music

But think Everything Everything are just slightly better, just listening to Man Alive again and it really is an extraordinary listen, loved Measure by Field Music too it's a close call both great albums

0
MrRadio | 18 May 2011 - 5:37pm

I like Field Music a lot too..

..so thank god it's not either/or.
I can even see the point of the misgivings that some people have..new bands this breathtaking often divide opinion.
Lately I've found that many bands that excite critics (Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand) are merely cyphers for critics fantasies, with no true musical vision (though in the case of The Monkeys, some lyrical)
Thats probably why I've seen nothing written about them yet.

shane pacey | 17 May 2011 - 2:47pm

Well now, Everything Everything?

They're my current band-crush & have been since I bought the utterly thrilling album about 6 months ago.
I hear Talking Heads & Radiohead in there, as well as XTC, & their sound is not simply limited to funky, jerky New Wave; my personal favourites are the brooding tracks like Tin (the Manhole),Leave the Engine Room, NASA Is On Your Side & the devastatingly intelligent & moving Final Form.

When I first heard them I'll admit that I felt like the King in Amadeus who, upon first hearing Mozart's latest opera, declared there to be "too many notes". Now, I love nothing more than following the whole album, cd sleeve in hand, keeping up with the fast-flowing lyrics & ululating falsetto.

Thank god for exciting bands like this. I'm a fan.

Crazy double post

Crazy double post

0
JamesB | 17 May 2011 - 10:05pm

hmmmm....

i can hear a bit of yes in there but...
Even coming from the class of '69 I have to confess that xtc have always been a little annoying to me, as have franz ferdinand, futureheads, and their ilk.
too much frantic jumping around and minor chords - give me languorous major chords and/or danceable rhythms any time. sorry.

0
danh | 17 May 2011 - 10:47pm

I listened to the album.

Falsetto vocals, widdly guitars, obscure chord progressions, peculiar time signatures..

There's more than a bit of Yes in there.

0
Lenny Law | 17 May 2011 - 11:58pm

That's good..

..isn't it?
