The Best Musical Duos In The World Maybe

David Wright's picture

I’ve just enjoyed watching the first series of Flight Of The Concordes.
Hilarious comedy, but those guys are obviously great musicians, as is comedy act Graham Fellows, aka John Shuttleworth.
Bit of a late starter to the Concordes, but it made me think, who are your favourite musical duos?
I’ll slip in The Pet Shop Boys and The Carpenters for starters, any others?
Although I say duos, you can still include duos who have extra musicians when they perform live etc.

Simon & Garfunkel

and on a mildly related note, Kings of Convenience.

Kings of Convenience

but I prefer them to S&G

I'd also like to raise you THE KILLS

Off the top of my head

The Knife - Silent Shout is wonderful, and new one will be worth a punt.
Eyeless in Gaza - One of the UKs best kept secrets.
Erasure - Check out those early albums.

Plus of course the previously mentioned S&G and Carpenters

Hall and Oates, quite right

Did you ever see this film of their sterling social work on a derelict London housing estate?!

1
Slotbadger | 15 January 2010 - 5:20pm

From The Daily Show

"Our guest tonight is Maggie Gyllenhaal, of the famous team of Gyllenhaal and Gyllenoates."

Here's two

The Coward Brothers
Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris
In fact just about anyone and Emmylou Harris

0
JohnW | 15 January 2010 - 4:05pm

Emmylou Harris and...

Emu?

0
Patrick Crowther | 15 January 2010 - 4:37pm

Where do I find it?

I can't comment as I hadn't realised she'd ever recorded with Emu. (Wasn't Emu a dumb puppet?)

0
JohnW | 15 January 2010 - 4:41pm

She will...

she will.

0
Patrick Crowther | 15 January 2010 - 6:49pm

Most perverse....

Soft Cell.... and the looniest, either Suicide or John Otway + Wild Willy Barratt!

0
iggypop | 15 January 2010 - 7:41pm

Chemical Brothers?

0
GunsOfBrixton | 15 January 2010 - 7:57pm

Speaking of which

Beautiful song.

0

3 x 2

The Handsome Family are pretty much my favourite band (of any size!).

And they might only be one album old, but I don't think anyone's mentioned Robert Plant and Alison Krauss yet...

Might be in the minority here, but I had an extremely soft spot for Moloko! 'Fun for Me', 'Sing it Back', 'Forever More'... Marvellous!

0
Specs_Beard | 15 January 2010 - 11:44pm

Some duo here!

1
Declan | 16 January 2010 - 12:02am

DUCKWORTH & LEWIS OF COURSE.....!!

:-).....well if not us how about 'The Reynolds Girls' or 'Peter & Gordon'?

DT.

0
DuckworThomas | 17 January 2010 - 2:37am

The Reynolds Girls?

Frankly, I'd rather jack...

0
stimpy | 17 January 2010 - 2:22pm

Favourite duo? Country...

and her estranged husband, Western.

0
Pax Romana | 17 January 2010 - 4:10am

Bernard Joseph Gallagher and Graham Hamilton Lyle

...are the best musical duo ever. I wish BBC4 in the UK would repeat their appearance on 'Sight And Sound In Concert' from 1978. Art Garfunkel's version of their song 'A Heart In New York' is my favourite single of all time.

0
goldheartbadge | 3 February 2010 - 9:32am

Wow. Fair old bit of memory lane rushing by there.

Hows about
- Godley & Creme
- XTC went through a duo stage there didn't they ?
- Blue Nile
- David & David
- Everything But The Girl
- Byrne & Eno

....but going on the reminders mentioned above I'm sure I'll be missing dozens of favourites.

It is possible that Swedish duo Deltahead just came and went

But if they did at least they did it in style.
