The best of January 2012

seanioio's picture

As it's the last day of January & it's usually quite a bleak month (new year resolutions were broken on the 5th, post Christmas blues, freezing cold etc. etc.), I thought I would try & spread a little joy amongst the massive.

What songs have you enjoyed listening to this January? Pick one or two that you have liked & I will compile it all into one Spotify playlist & then post the link for your perusal. It doesnt have to be a new song, just anything that has staved off those January blues.

Here are mine;

The Maccabees - Pelican

The Human League - Seconds

1

Great idea

Here are mine:

And So I Watch You From Afar: "BEAUTIFULUNIVERSEMASTERCHAMPION"

This has been getting played ragged for the last six months.

Childish Gambino: "LES"

The first hip hop record I've enjoyed in what feels like a very long time.

Fleetwood Mac: "Over and Over"

This has been keeping me warm on the way to and from the office.

Not sure

that I know how to post videos from my iPad, but I'll give it a try. My two most listened to tracks these past few weeks would be:
Rain Tree Crow "Blackwater"
and Malcom Mclaren "Paris Paris"

Edit. Well that didn't work. One day I'll get me one o'them there "computer" thingies. Anyone want to help me out here and post them... anyone? ...anyone?

Here you go

KDH | 31 January 2012 - 12:17pm

Now that, KDH, is why

I prefer you to the rest of the Massive and always have done. That and the fact that you probably have exemplary cheekbones. I thank you.

Shins/M83

My two current faves are a new one:

and a new one to me:

Haven't heard that in ages!

I feel compelled to offer this in response:

0
Merv | 31 January 2012 - 2:18pm

That was the first track of theirs I heard

it was on a Q CD years ago. Great album but I think my copy was wrecked by my son when he was a toddler. He just loved the shiny discs.

0
davebigpicture | 31 January 2012 - 2:26pm

Same here!

I think I still have that CD somewhere - I also got into Aimee Mann thanks to the excellent 4th Of July being included on it.

Greed

I'm a latecomer to all things Durian and Blockheaded, but this has really been floating my boat over the last month :

And this has been getting a few plays too :

Andy Latimer, surely one of

Andy Latimer, surely one of the great unsung guitarists and one of most soulful melodic solos ever - 7 min 15 secs in.

I guess he never got the recognition as he looked a little too much like a young Andrew lloyd webber's little sister.

Don't you love the OGWT - 10 minutes of instrumental prog from some skinny longhaired geeks to finish off the show.

The bass player appears to have been shuttled in by time machine from 2012.

I can still recall the thrill

I had as a 16 year old, of waking up on what was THE Saturday morning that I was to buy the LP Moonmadness. Even looking at the CD cover today sets me tingling.

Happy Days.

Mine are...

... St. Vincent - Surgeon / Ryan Adams - Dirty Rain

Here's mine:

Current favourite from L Cohen's new album, very Dylanesque:

And the Goldfrapp single

Some old

I've been listening to songs that remind me of soporific summers past. January, not April, is the cruellest month: cold, wet, the post Christmas/New Year blues and the tax bill at the end of the month. Thank God for the Pennines, the log fire and stew and dumplings.

The Bible's first album Walking The Ghost Back Home with some of the best chord changes this side of Donald Fagen.

The Bible - Walking The Ghost Back Home

Julian Cope's 2nd album World Shut Your Mouth and his sparse Canterbury scene influenced songs like Laughing Boy

And one Ma Bisto loves:

Mia Doi Todd - Summer Lover

0
Ahh_Bisto | 31 January 2012 - 12:53pm

For me

January's been all about

Big Star - The Ballad of El Goodo

and

Wild Flag - Electric Band

the guitar solo at around 2:30 makes my heart skip

MMMM, sacrelicious

as Homer once said. This cover of Aja by The Darcys is floating my duck right now. They've covered the whole album and are giving it away, if this piques yr interest why not give it a go.

Less controversial is this fab new track by First Aid Kit. First Aid Kit is a Swedish folk duo composed of sisters Johanna and Klara Söderberg, this song is taken from their new album, also called 'The Lion's Roar'

http://www.emusic.com/listen/#/album/first-aid-kit/the-lions-roar/129366...

As a precaution against The Darcy's not being on Spotify can I pick another one? Cheers.
This will lodge itself in yr head and stay there til Christmas.

My January list

tends to be genre-classified as 'miserabilist' - which may not be the tone for which you are looking!

More First Aid Kit

I've been giving the new album a bit of a caning (even though it's not been out long) and I think Emmylou is my favourite track.

Otherwise Eleanor Friedburger's album seems to have had a lot of plays. Inn of the Seventh Ray is my favourite from that one:

Its been a sort of Garage-y/Mod-y Month

Graham Day & The Gaolers - Soundtrack To The Daily Grind

The Gents - Revenge

(The Album 'How It All Began' was re-issued by Detour Records in October - only just get round to getting it)

First-Aid Kit -

New Stuff

Love Emmylou by First Aid Kit as posted above. Also enjoying listening to Gretchen Peters new album Hello Cruel World. Some amazing tracks on the album. I also enjoyed the session she did with Bob Harris.

I am afraid that there were 6 songs I could not find - if anyone does come across them please add them in

Apologies to the below;

KDH Malcolm McLaren & Catherine Deneuve - Paris Paris
Five-Centres Ronnie Burns - Smiley
Five-Centres Chunky - Albatross Baby
Agent Graves Blockheads - Greed
Johnny Topaz Field Music - Guillotine
Tiggerlion Maria McKee - Smarter

The Darcy cover of AJA was on there though so Georgedivided will be happy :)

If everyone is up for this I am more than happy to do this again at the end of Feb. I have discovered some great songs I might not have done otherwise (notably First Aid Kit & The Magnetic Fields)

The Blockheads track is there, in fact I've been listening to it on Spotify, I would add it but I don't think you've set the playlist up to be collaborative (right click on it and choose 'Collaborative Playlist').
