The Beatles - Vegas #2

Philip Bryer's picture
When:
04/09/2011
Where:
The Mirage Hotel, Las Vegas
Comments:
Initially dubious at the sight of acrobats, trapeze artists, harlequin costumes and a bloke taking off a top hat, putting it on again and doing a cartwheel, it won me over because just when you start to think it’s crap it confounds you by being all-of-a-sudden stunningly brilliant again and you scratch your head and think, “How did they do that?”. An enormous billowing sheet descended over the arena and part of the audience for “Tomorrow Never Knows” and then, Shazam! It’s .…gone (like it was just a special effect). ‘Something’ is just beautiful, ‘Lucy in the Sky’ starts up and you wonder where the floor went, even ‘Octopuses Garden’ is fun, mind you, what they do with ‘Lady Madonna’ is rubbish.
The Audience:
A demographic spread so wide it was like being in a Coke advert.
Food & Drink:
The Fabs-themed Revolution Bar, which boasts a nice sound system and a bunch of snooty staff who haven’t grasped the fact they’re working in nothing more than a theme pub. Pricey wine.
It Made Me Think...:
The sound is properly awesome – if you can’t bear the thought of tumbling pranksters you can always shut your eyes and just listen. Although it was a little sobering to think that I’d never hear this music sounding so good again.
