The Archers Pop Quiz/Mad Fact

ChaileyJem's picture

I'm a bit of a fan of The Archers. It rather crept on me. At first it was just Sunday mornings. Now I tend to crave it during the week as well. It annoys me and delights me in equal amounts. The despair and persistence of the heartbreaking Jack Woolley storyline as opposed to how a relationship could break up because someone gets a PR job in Leicester.
I was also rather taken aback only yesterday to discover that current lovely youngish Radio1 DJ Greg James is a big fan.

Anyway a poser for you all. Which character/actor has sung on a No.1 record ?
I was rather surprised when I found out. (Its not Pip). According to Wikipedia of course.

Tasmin Archer?

Only joking, Terry Wogan has appeared (is that the right word) in an episode so presumably the marvellous "Floral Dance" ticks the box.

Don't know the actor…

… but were they singing with Chinese White Bedsock?

Joe Grundy?

Probably for an invented charity.

Was...

...Michael Fenton Stevens one of The Chicken Song gang?

0
Inky Fingers | 19 May 2010 - 8:43am

Wasn't he also a Hee Bee Gee Bee

(not sure about the spelling) with Angus Deayton and others. They sang "Meaningless songs in very high voices" - which was a hit. It may have got to number one outside the UK.

He certainly was...

MFS, Angus Deayton, Phil Pope plus session players

stimpy | 19 May 2010 - 10:00am

Seem to remember

Eddy Grundy having aspirations in that direction, but a #1 record... maybe not.

My claim to fame

is having gone out with one of the cast members for 6 years. (How crap a claim to fame is that?) but I can confirm she had no number ones.

IanP | 19 May 2010 - 11:06am

Is it Fallon or Jazzer?

Fallon's band seemed to be going quite well before she split with her guitarist and I was impressed with Jazzer's voice at the talent show.

Agree with you about The Archers being annoying/delightful Chailey. There are some intensely annoying characters and tedious farming talk (David and his family). I also find some of the young characters and some of the posh ones sound a bit samey.

But I always enjoy listening to it on Sunday. The lighter stories are funnier than the TV soaps and the more serious storylines have got time to evolve.

Although the 'tedious farming talk' was originally

the point of the series

0
stimpy | 19 May 2010 - 11:08am

In a previous incarnation

I did 'at homes' with Lynda Snell and Peggy Woolley. Delightful, the pair of them.

is it Mr Pullen?

Do tell.

but no, not Pip, since until recently she was a bookish, meek schoolgirl, until she took up with "that Jude" of course - he and his flash car (cont p94)

Inky Fingers was right/ Chicken Song it is

Sorry. For the delay. Is 24 hours too leisurely a pace for this sort of thing. ?

The answer is of course, as Inky Fingers pointed out: Michael Fenton Stevens who plays Paul (Matt's brother who thinks Lillian is wonderful etc) was also the voice of Spitting Image' Chicken Song
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Fenton_Stevens
which went to No.1 in 1986.

Matt won't be impressed with that i wager.
