The Album I Missed Last Year But Discovered This Year
Posted by CharlieB on 7 February 2009 - 2:52pm.
When I first heard it I wasn't sure if it was by a group called 'The '59 Sound' or the album title was 'The Gaslight Anthem'.
Both would suffice in my world of multi album existence. I then discovered it was the other way around.Without a shadow of doubt this is the best bit of rock released last year. With shades of Springsteen and Neil Young at their best.As with most 'classic' albums this one has a flow to it and no filler.
The only thing I want to know is how this has slipped below my personal radar? Also, it was not recognised by those individuals living in the world of critic land in their end of year picks.
So if you have the cash to invest in these troubled times investigate and enjoy!

Agreed,
a cracking album. Someone else mentioned them in their blog a while back, I Googled the band, listened to a few tracks and bought the CD. Their first album "Sink or Swim" is equally impressive.
Concur
Both are available on E Music btw.
It's also on Spotify, BUT
they're listed as 'The Gaskight Anthem' . Find it here

Its very good
I don't quite get The Holdsteady but the Gaslight Anthem make lots of sense to me.
Another thumbs up
...I got The 59' Sound a few weeks ago - eMusic placed it top in their albums of 2008 - and it's been on constant play since. They have been in UK this week (final show Sunday 8th in London) and are back in March playing Norwich and Nottingham. Snow stopped me going over to Manchester on Wednesday - has any one seen them live?
Here they are on Letterman in January - enjoy!
I found them on eMusic this Saturday.
Never heard of them before. I liked the 30 second clips and downloaded all of it (which is a rarity as I usually cherry pick by skipping the down-tempo tracks).
MORE ANTHEM
In the week that the Hyde Park Springsteen concert is announced, it is revealed that The Gaslight Anthem will support him. All this just as Bruce declares his new found love of the band in a pre Superbowl interview.
Then just as I was scrolling through the SKY Programme guide I found a live session of the band on Channel M - the Manchester based channel where the band's lead singer's father was born.
Live they are just as good and the session is available via their website and here is the link http://www.channelm.co.uk/music/
